Cochin Thread!!!

It seems to be quiet as far as comments on pictures and such lately. I am wondering if there is Brown Red or Mottled in the parents background somewhere. I don't know sure but it is my best guess.
.

Thanks, The flock they came from are some very nice black Bantoms I E-mailed pics to the breeders but haven't heard anything back from but they are local and we run into them all the time.
From what they said they have only had black chicks from them before but who knows these may be from one of the newer additions or younger birds who knows.
Goldie is quite pretty though and has the best attitude of them all!!
My best guess would be that your Blacks had a Silver laced parent. Both these bird look partially laced. I have similar birds from breeding Black x Gold laced and then breeding the resulting offspring back together.

concidering these are more than likely siblings being two odd balls out of the incubator, .. "what do you predict the out come may be if we allow them to be a pair and raise some chicks?
We have more from the same breeder out of succesive hatches both buffs and blacks "buffs for the grand kidswho are not part of the project" and blacks to attempt to get a few more hens for what was to be the black project.
Also for Marys broody hen bin to save on incubator space

For my $0.02 on the off colored blacks. This hen was a dark blue when I bought her. Notice the gold on her chest. I bred her to an all black but was known to throw some silver necks every once in a while. I got 6 babies and 2 girls were black with gold on the neck and one boy had silver hackles. The other three were blck. All had some bluish fluff under neath. I was told by the person I got them from that it came from mixing colors in their background(from a breeder that she got the birds from and she wasn't too happy either} It took her three years to finally get back her solid blacks through selective breeding.( I ithink his picture qualifies for the cochin thread because it has an MF bantam cochin in there too). ;) edit:and I am just trying to show the gold colr.for an example.

So as inexperienced as I am I would guess this is a sex linked trait from (somewhere)

DAK I love your cochins!!!! and their massive heads/brows!!!!!

oh and on these silkies I have never seen a gold hackled male, only silver hackled males. And never seen a silver hackled female either.

They are OK. I would like more width, but they are still young and that only improves with age. I know that with my Blacks, they seem to get better between age one and two. The LF are such late maturing birds.

Dak, can I come move into your coop/shed? Between your English Orps and the BLC project... I'd be in heaven!

On another Cochin related note, is anyone else working on chocolate bantam Cochins right now? I know Danny is... Is anyone using chocolate Orps? I am asking because I think I have come across an issue. My 'bantam' Orps weigh nearly 7lbs and they are only 6.5 months old. Can I trust a 7lb rooster not to kill my little 2lb bantam Cochin hens? Or will have to learn AI? I am sure I could sell my current Orps and get true bantams, but that sets me back. I finally have a black pullet that is nice and started laying. I can start breeding now! Just not sure about allowing one of my hims alone with her...

No Orps here, sorry! LF Cochins and Ameraucanas, and Bantam Brahmas and Barred Rocks at the moment. The BRs are on the bubble though despite the recent win. My LF Black Cochin cock went Reserve Ch to her. The man who puts on the local APA show had a bunch of his Moderns and Leghorns there entered under his girlfriends name, so I'm happy with the wins even though it was a Co. fair.

He is from Bo's breeding.

Very nice birds. I really like the Barred Rock pullet and the cochin is massive! You are doing a fine job with them.

Blessings,

Bo

Thanks Bo. I finally have some chicks from him and the pullet I had at Shawnee last Dec. Very typey, but too young for this year. Should be good for next year depending on when they molt. Not sure when they'll do that having hatched in July.

Are you having a milder summer this year?

The Starks said to say hi. Any chance you might make the Four Corners show this year?
