Cochin Thread!!!

I asked earlier and no one answered so I'd like to try again.

Is anyone other than Danny working on a chocolate bantam Cochin project?  Anyone using chocolate Orps?

Anyone know if my Orps can safely breed my Cochins without killing them?  I mean, they are supposed to be bantams, but at nearly 6-7lbs and 18" tall... Not exactly bantam sized.  As far as I know someone else is allowing their Orp over their MFC girls, but her rooster does not seem as big as my cockerels.  I do not want to AI unless I absolutely have to but I don't want to jeopardize my girls' safety either.  They may not be $50-100 show birds but it was not easy getting the two girls I have, so they are priceless to me at this point.

Thanks!

They are different breeds, but I have a huge light Sussex rooster (greenfire farms) and he breeds with all the hens in his pen which includes a tiny Japanese bantam that I have for raising babies... I have witnessed it and I freaked out at first, but the hen was fine and doesn't run from him...
Funniest thing tho.... One day his feet slipped off her and on the ground on either side, but it didn't phase either one. Is that drive thru service LoL I wish I had my camera!
I will be putting my"bantam" chocolate in with my Cochins because they are better suited temperament wise.

Thanks! I had large Orps, Ameraucanas, Speckled Sussex and a few other breed roosters running with Sebrights and an OEGB, but I never seen them mate. I assumed then girls just stayed away from them! I never had fertile eggs from them... I guess I will see how it goes once I know the scaly leg mites are gone on this one girl. I can not wait to get my breeding pens built, set up and going!

Hi I'm new to having Cochins I just hatched out 10 bantam cochins the other day they were supposed to be sq but I noticed some have 5 toes some have half half colored beaks and some have yellowing on top of head these are black btw....I was wondering how long would it take to breed the negative traits out so that they Re up to whT the standard for the breed should look like...out of the 10 only 3 seem to look pure Cochin

NOT SQ Cochins if there are 5 toes. That would be a DQ. Something jumped the fence. 5 Toes have Silkie in the background. It sounds to me like you are describing Black Cochin chicks. Any with black skin will not be pure Cochins. It would take a while to breed out what you are describing. Best thing is to grow out the ones you describe as pure Cochin and see if they are something you would like to use to breed. Ask us more questions and enjoy your birds.
