Cochin Thread!!!

Something I've been asking myself lately about my breeding program, and I thought I'd ask the thread members as well. We all know that it can sometimes take a few years and/or generations to achieve the results we are looking for, whether it be correcting type, color, pattern, or all of the above. So here's my question to everyone - try to limit your answers to just one or two sentences.

What is your 3-year (or 5-year) goal for your Cochin flock and breeding program?

can't say I really have a specific timeline for any of my birds, other than to improve type overall, within each breed / color variety i work with.

I was just down feeding my chickens when I noticed one of the cochin chicks has a very clear blue barred pattern. Absolutely amazed once again. We got our first flock 5 years ago which consited of a 11 hens and 1 rooster. They were pet quality LF cochins in the colors white, black, and partridge. I hatched my first chicks that fall and over half of them were blue! The other half was black. I was so excited that I had a new color, a beautiful blue. Next hatch, I got 3 unique looking chickens. One looked like a lemon blue and another 2 hens looked exactly like brown reds. Now I've got what appears to be blue barred. It's definately a blue chick with an obvious barring pattern. I have no idea how these colors came from partridge, white, and black but I love them. I know the genetics must be srewed up for this to happen, but I will be keeping them for layers as I look for better quality cochins to breed in separate pens.

the white can mask a lot of things... but since white removes all color from the feathers, you have no way of knowing what's under that coat of 'paint'. i'd dare say it's also barred which is why you have a barred now too. it could also be a blue, which would explain the blues you got.

What is your 3-year (or 5-year) goal for your Cochin flock and breeding program?

I have some pretty specific goals.
With my Mille Fleurs it's getting the chevrons on the breasts; working towards the correct Mille Fleur color pattern. We need to get the pattern established before it'll ever be an accepted color in Cochins.
With my Calicos it's keeping these colors:

to maturity!
In Buff Barreds it's getting the middle toes feathers on every chick. .
Working on type in all varieties.
(In Silkies it's nothing short of championship row!)

Ok here he is..my black Cochin, that is getting orange/brown splotches. They seem to be only on his wings for now. He is 13 weeks. He's also the one that shimmers purple in the sun, so nothing is surprising me with him. The woman we got them from had a huge mix of colors, BBS, a lemon blue, and I believe she gets barred and partridge as well.

Multiple goals.

1 For it to still be fun!

2. To breed,hatch, raise, and show a Columbian that wins BB or RB. This is a tough one but it is a goal of mine.

3. To hatch enough decent Silver Penciled to get some out to others to work with.

4. To be able to not call my Silver Laced a project anymore.

Ok, so I shouldn't be surprised when odd things pop up? I'm just your average backyard chicken owner, I wanted pretty chickens. Not looking for show quality, and would never hatch eggs from any of these guys. I've noticed a few flaws in them. And it helps when I can come on here and figure out what's going on, instead of guessing.
I wonder if he'll keep the splotches or if they'll molt out later? All my others have pretty standard coloring..man I wish I got a lemon, the ladies Rooster was just beautifully colored.
