SO MANY COCHINS . . . SO LITTLE TIME!!! Sorry I've been quiet this week - not ignoring you all - just very busy. So I'll try to catch-up, and hope I don't miss anyone.

Twyla and Sanna - How are your hens doing now? Well and recovered now, I hope.

Nancy W. - What a fantastic picture of your Buff Barred!!

Craig - We've been speaking a bit off-line, but again, your new Castle is worthy of the royalty you are raising. And thank you for the great pics from Sedalia. I know you were upset about forgetting your black cock, but how do you think he felt being left Home Alone? I envision him waddling down the road after you when you left.

qldchook and Sarah - The Standard calls for toes as follows: "Four, straight, well and evenly spread, middle and outer toes completely feathered to ends." Bare middle and/or outer toes are a disqualification. Regarding color of the feet, bottoms of feet showing complete absence of yellow is a disqualification. Shanks and toes colored other than what is called for is also a disqualification. The Standard calls for, in general, either yellow and/or swarthy yellow in all the Varieties. Some define "swarthy yellow" as a dark, dusky or dirty yellow. (Swarthy yellow is NOT willow or green tinged.)

Tony - Congrats on attending your first show! It sounds like you had a great time. You just have to rise above the back-stabby talk, and be careful to never fall in with it. I think it's no different than just about all walks of life - whether we're talking about our animals or people. Ever hear people talk behind their friends backs about how they raise their children, or train their dogs??!!

Casey - Only you could raise a "runt" just as beautiful as all your others.

Lynne - This is in repsonse to your postings on the MF thread, but your work to focus on type this past year has paid off in Aces!

Do Cochins like free ranging? I've been giving the flock about an hour of supervised time out of the run, and while my big girls (18 weeks) are spreading out, the Cochins (13&15 weeks) never go further then five feet from the run. Our run is really big, so I thought maybe they aren't going crazy being they aren't in cramped spaces all the time?

No my friend Annamay bred , hatched and raised that bird.



She has been working to improve them for a while. Looks like she is really turning the corner! I also took a picture of a slightly younger male Birchen she had hatched. Here he is.

A few generations back she used a Matt McCammon Mottled to bring in good type and improve the combs. This is going to be a nice Birchen. He is a little younger than the pullet.

I really really like the Birchen's, one of my favorite varieties, and all the birds pictured are so very beautiful. The cockerel above is jaw dropping. I may have to get with her sometime and get some Birchen, and worry a little less about the SP or SL. These Birchens are amazing.

Mine love to go outside, but they never stray too far. I try to encourage them away from the barn, but they usally stay within 10 feet of it and they only wander on their side of it. God only knows what could happen to them if they went to the other side of the barn, hahaha. When ever I let them out, they race out in excitement, but they just don't seem to want to go too far from their home (maybe it would disappear otherwise) hahaha. I don't know if this is normal for cochins, it's just my experience.

I really really like the Birchen's, one of my favorite varieties, and all the birds pictured are so very beautiful. The cockerel above is jaw dropping. I may have to get with her sometime and get some Birchen, and worry a little less about the SP or SL. These Birchens are amazing.

She had 3 or 4 generations of Birchens there. 1 of those generations was a Cock bird she gave me last year that I showed to fill out the class.. Her 5-6 year old Cock is still awesome. In the 2nd show the judge picked the old bird as BV. She did not hatch many chicks this year but they were pretty good!

Hi Gail~ Bijou is hanging in there, I had a friend come over today and look at her. She said it looked like she had a sting mark on one of the wattles. I had felt all along that it was some sort of allergy or something along those lines. I know I got stung earlier this summer and it swelled up pretty bad. Poor little girl, she's lost a little weight but still eating well. My friend gave me some Tylan to try on her. Has anyone ever given their birds any Benadryl before? I was thinking maybe a very tiny amount, a little afraid to try though. Thanks for asking! Twyla

I have mentioned a few times about hatching a runt bird this year. It turned out to be a pullet, and a very pretty one at that. Her only fault is she is less than half the size of all the birds hatched the same time she was. She is the only one I ended up with. My sister just loves her, calls her "Me" (her name is Felicia, she is 26 with 3 kids and is 4'11" and weights 100 lbs, soaking wet) because she says she is small like her. Lol. I have no intentions on breeding her or using her for anything, she will just be a pet, was just curious if anyone else ended up with any? I also know this is something I should have culled for, but she is healthy and I didnt notice it until they were 3-4 months old, and was curious as to see what she would turn out to be. I took a couple pics, not the best ones, but it helps give you an idea on her size, and how small she really is.


Here she is next to a frizzle pullet that was hatched in July. She is right at 3 months old, and is already bigger than this pullet.


And here she is with a pullet hatched the same time she was. She is not sickly, or weird acting, she actually fends for herself and usually wins little scuffles they have. And despite her small size, she is one of the fattest birds I have. (The birds wings to the right are not that tight to her body, I was holding her wings because she was trying to get away and get a treat. Also why she has turtle neck going on.)


Also, had talked about getting the 2 frizzle pullets I lost a while back replaced with some birds hatched from eggs I had given to a guy here locally. I got to go to his place and pick out the 2 pullets I wanted, and I brought him 2 pair in return. I was supposed to bring him a trio for 2 pullets, and brought an extra cockerel to him because I had too many still. I ended up leaving with a trio, not just 2 pullets (Go figure, huh?). And I managed to get a few pics the day before I cleaned the coop (been about 3 weeks ago now), and wanted to show them off. All 3 are, sometimes annoying, with how they follow you around all the time, lol. I am always ending up with one or more of the 3 on my shoes, or in my lap. They are older now, and have matured a lot in just 3 weeks. The cockerel I am really happy about, he looks to have good type overall, and a decent Cochin head. Only have one pullet pictured, have to get some of the other one, I know.

Twyla, I don't know much about using Benadryl on birds. I've heard that you can use a topical antiseptic like Neosporin, as long as you get the one that does NOT have the painkiller in it.
