Cochin Thread!!!

well, so much for my hopes of having bbs cochins (for now)... something got my blue girl today. she was just coming up on POL, looking very nice.

I got home and let the dogs out, my youngest std poodle, Sunny, starts wandering around behind the coops up into the woods. since he's an avid egg-eater i have a tendency to follow him by sight to see if he can tell me where the girls are hiding eggs. instead i find a mass of blue feathers spread in about a 4' circle. no body. but then he went over to the fence line, and there was what was left of the carcass (legs wings neck and body cavity, all cleaned of meat) hanging from the barbed wire. I wasn't sure if it was the pullet or roo, but turned out to be the pullet...

from what i can tell, she was killed where the feather pile is, and then snagged on the fence when whatever killed her tried to take her with it.

the roo's just fine. but i don't have any girls to put with him now, so do i keep him in the hopes of finding another blue girl in the next 3-6 months or sell him off with my other excess roos and start over in the spring? my only hens are the self blue (for sale with her roo) and 4 in my mille fleur pen. and a ton of mille fleur chicks. (plus some silver laced, buff barred, red and partridge)

suggestions? (and no, shipping a bird isn't an option right now since i'm out of work until the end of November).

So so sorry Karen.
With shipping not an option, maybe you can find one at a show near you in the next month or so. Many breeders will deliver to the shows they attend.

The Virginia Poultry Breeders Show is November 17th in Ruthers Glen:

Quote: thanks. but i decided i'm not going to add any new colors until spring now. lets see how the silver laced and other chicks that hatched grow out, plus i've got a bunch of mille fleur both hatching and in the brooders too. sold the blue roo today to a girl who lost her blue, so that worked out, also sold the self blue pen and all 3 blue buff columbian roos that were left over. so the only birds outside now are my keepers.

and wouldn't you know, i've got 2 that decided to go broody this week on me. (again)

What do you think of this typey little 7 month old pullet. I hatched her from WestKnollAmy's MF project eggs.

Looking for a nice Roo to put her with to further work on the MF project. I was going to breed my own Buff Columbians and Mottleds but if this little girl can kick start it i will give it a try.

Thanks for your input!
Tony

I have Buff Columbians. If you decide to do that contact me. I know so little about Mille that I will not comment.

God but your BC are gorgeous! I wish I could have kept up with them.
I was talking to Annamay the other day and complaining that I've never been able to correctly breed my gorgeous Birchen/Mottled hen from Jamie Matts. I've tried her with Mottled and Birchen and the color is never good. She suggested that I breed her to one of Mandy's Golden Laced roos and that is the path to true Mille Fleur. Since seeing Annamay's Mille Fleur it is seriously tempting to try, but I've been trying to reduce my numbers and varieties, not take on more. Oh what a dilemma, anything Annamay suggests is so tempting, she is such a font of information.
By the way, did you know she is coming to Columbus and will be staying with Mandy and me at the Hilton Gardens - the "headquarters" for the cochins. I assume that is where you will be. This is the most fun about showing, the kibitzing and togetherness of everyone. I could talk chickens 24 hours a day.

I will be next door at the Comfort Inn Saturday evening. I am driving in to arrive Sat AM.. I am only bringing 9 to show maybe less. I knew Annamay was coming to Columbus but not showing.. She feeds enough Cochins to go through a ton of feed a month. I am bringing 1 Buff Columbian to Columbus but I think she is about to fall apart. The pullet in the top picture.

Enjoying keeping my bantam cochin chicks on sand so far. Do any of you do this with success? So easy to sift out all the little poops every day and keep it clean so far. The sand acts just like clumping kitty litter. Since it is cold outside here in Michigan, I needed to find some way to keep them from getting too stinky in our basement. My daughter loves having her picture taken, can you tell?
