Cochin Thread!!!

Cute! Buff? Odd time of year for hatching chicks. I stop in October so I don't have to raise chicks in my bathroom all Winter. :)
that's what i love about sw virginia winters... i hatch year round and when they're 4-6 weeks move them to a heated house with a run... they decide when they're ready to go outside and hang out all day. the 'indoor chicks' are from 3 hatches now, ranging from 2 days old to 3 weeks old now.

I have a question regarding type/shape. Just exactly how early do you more experienced breeders have an idea if your bird will have decent potential? I'm not talking about combs and feet - I talking overall type - full chest, good neck, waterfall cushion, etc?

Do you see a difference at one (1) month of age? Can you pick out at one month the ones with better potential?

I've been tracking the development of this year's chicks in one-month increments with photos. At one month, some look much, much better than others - well, as good I guess as a one month old chick can look.

At 2 and 3 months, every single one of them is leggy, long-necked, and totally out of proportion - like a teenager. I was ready to cull every single one of them.

But now at 4 months, they are settling back in, and the best ones are the same ones that were the best ones at one month of age - only now bigger. For some, it seems their silhouettes look almost the same, only bigger.

Is this all just a coincidence? Or it could just be my eyes - I am getting up there, you know.
I have wondered this myself. I would love to hear some feedback from others.

Ok...I might be asking dumb questions but I'm wanting to make sure I completely understand the genetics etc before I begin this project. Since mo is recessive, when I breed my black mottled roo to my solid blue hens, they will all be bbs solids. But when I breed my F1 back to my mottled roo they should all be mottled, correct?

Fever -

Half of the F1 x Mottle roo will be mottled and half of those will be blue, half will be black.

(first cross) mo/mo bl/bl x Mo+/Mo+ Bl/bl gives

Mo+/mo Bl/bl or blue, carrying Mottle
Mo+/mo bl/bl or black carrying Mottle

mo/mo bl/bl x (F1 blues) Mo+/mo Bl/bl gives

Mo+/mo Bl/bl or blue, carrying Mottle
Mo+/mo bl/bl or black carrying Mottle
mo/mo Bl/bl or blue Mottle
mo/mo bl/bl or black Mottle

I think this is correct. From here you cross the F2 blue Mottle to black Mottle to get blue Mottle and black Mottle. Because of blue genetics, you never get 100 % blue Mottle chicks. On average, with large numbers it could only approach 50%.

I'm with you! I hatch year round, just keep heat lamps and brooders going. My thinking is that if I'm hatching now, by spring I have some birds that are ready to start early for summer breeding season~ plus I'm addicted to hatching!! Lol

Okay, I finally figured out the Youtube thing. It looks like if I combine all the files into one, it will not load properly so I had to leave everything divided into 5 clips that are about 1-2 minutes each. Someday I'll invest in some better video editing software and learn what I am doing, but now is not the time! If you watch the first clip on the actual Youtube website, there is a link to the next clip in the description and you'll be able to adjust the resolution, up to 720 HD. So, here are most of the bantam cochins at the Ohio Nationals...

First clip on Youtue website:

She looks to have nice lacing on the chest. Nice eye color and nice yellow feet. She will have too much white. My best ones have been almost solid as pullets/cockerels and the next year they molt out to look like they should. Tail feathers on both look nice and wide. I can't tell the pullet's conformation, she appears to be hunkered down from the camera. The cockerel looks a little yellow, but I'm assuming it's because he's dirty. His wings appear to be a little weak as do hers, but they are young. Keep an eye on that
This is a Blue Mottled pullet I am thinking of keeping to add to my breeding stock of Splash. I plan to breed her to this new Splash cockerel I hatched out from my stock. Any opinions on their quality (as far as breeding & show)?

Amy:

Her white feathers look yellow b/c she is dirty & needs a bath. :/
