I recently got chicks, and one of them is starting to sort of act and look like a rooster. It's a Speckled Sussex, and somewhere around 4 weeks old? I don't exactly how old it is because it was older than the other chicks when I got them. Is it a boy or a girl? Thanks!

It's hard to tell at 4 weeks old. In another week or two you will see some color in the comb if it is male. Sussex chicks can be very bossy and dominating even at a very young age. So attitude shouldn't be the deciding factor in whether it's male or not. Can you post again next week or so? I just love to look at the chicks.

I just separated my purebred Speckled Sussex from the rest of the flock. In another 2 weeks I'll be collecting eggs for incubating. :yesss:

Very cute rooster, look at the pronounced comb at that young age! But wait till he crows before you do anything. I have some experience with many breeds, and raised 21 roos before I had to give off all of them. All were from 1 day old, to watching them hatch!

It's early but I'm gonna say pullet. Speckled Sussex may seem like bossy birds but that's just cuz they love their treats. Yours has a very nice defined chipmunk stripe (may not ring true every time but puts the odds more on pullet.)
