It seems the young generation of today is one of take, take, and take. For some reason they feel they are entitled and want it served on a silver platter. Children are not raised today to understand that they have to work if they want something. Get off your soap box Karen.

and what has happened to the concept of 'buy it when you can afford it'?

This may be a bit of a shocker then; the main house uses 7 to 8 tons each winter and this Spain where -6C is cold. The crazy thing is it's still cold in the main house despite three wood burners. The kitchen in the main house was 15C with the wood burner going.
I'm sitting in a sweat shirt here and it's 25C in the living room and 22C in the bedroom. I burn about half a ton a year. I could and have cut all the firewood I need for a winter but to cater for the main house is a major task.

I think my husband figured it out once and we are burning about 20 tons per winter. He likes it a bit cooler than I do but keeps it warmer for me. We have one old growth oak on the ground right now waiting for the weather to turn and the pasture to dry out so we can start harvesting it. It Succumbed to oak wilt last summer, which made me sad as it was a beautiful rambling white oak tree.

So we start in spring as soon as conditions permit and hope to have all of the wood to the barn, split, and piled by the end of June but we ran late this past year due to a very wet spring.

We usually drop two or three large trees to thin out the timber and then top off with dead fall. It's a lot of work but when we are done it gives you a real feeling of accomplishment.
