My WHOLE family got the flu about 7 years ago. IT was AWFUL. My Dh and I missed 2 weeks of work. We burned up with a HIGH FEVER for 3 days - - - we were so out of it that we couldn't even get dressed to get to the doctor. When we did make it to the doctor - - still with high fever - - doctor said " You all have the FLU, go home, drink lots of liquids, call work - - you won't be in for a couple of weeks".

Dh NEVER Misses work. NEVER in 20 plus years of marriage EXCEPT with that FLU. We were so lucky to make it through that because we all had it and we were so out of it and the kids were so young!

NEVER EVER AGAIN - - we started taking the flu shots the very next year! YES, we made it over 30 years without getting the flu - EVER. ONCE you have experienced it, you won't ever chance it again!

Chicks - I don;t know how your girl will be I think they are all different. My Bertha only quit brooding last week. That is a good 18 weeks. She still hangs out with the chicks and always throws her treats on the ground for them. I wonder sometimes how she survives and what exactly she does eat herself???

My Bertha got very very distressed when I took her away from her babies. I never ever heard a hen make such a sobbing noise - I think you should take a few away from your hen and see if she notices or gets too distressed. They say usually about 6-8 weeks and the chicks should be fine. Though folk seperate from just a day or so old.
My Bertha is certainly a rare girl. But then she never lays eggs now. She maybe laid the odd one every 3-4 weeks before the chicks and she has not laid an egg in months now so its a big traid off. Actually if she goes back broody again I am going to use her next year. MAybe try Gerty too now she has seem it done???

I really feel for you with Sunshine. I do think you sould try and see how it goes taking a few away - though I am sure they can count.
This is the last photo I have of Bertha brooding her massive chicks and you can deffinately see she is counting and that the number is wrong as Mable has escaped and is up on the roosting bar!!!!! - Bertha grabbed her foot and pulled her down after that and sat on her! That was the last night now they are all up on the bar except nugget who seems scared of it.

Here is Bertha trying to put her chicks in the corner to sit on them when she realises one is missing !!!!!!

This is Mable the dark chicken at the front looking all pleased with herself. Caroline the white girl at the back looking on is full grown so you can see there isn;t much difference!!!!!
59801_sa400032.jpg

You can just see the brown of Bertha under the roosting bar this is the moment that she grabs poor Mable and pulls her down!!!!! She didn;t look so pleased with herself after that!!!!!
Do try with sunshine though - I mean you wouldn;t really want a Bertha on your hands would you??????

Well, good garden o' peas, I missed alot.

Seems to me some of us started out the same way. Alot of our furniture was used as well. We had a small wringer washer I bought used for $25. Clothes were rinsed in a wash tub. I had that when I was single. It either went to the laundra mat to dry or got hung out.

Folks I really think we're trying to protect our kids from the trials we had to go through and it's not doing them any good. DW is to soft and I reach my limit and then explode. Not good I know. I recently sent e-mails to my kids to stop asking for money. The two living here just got told to get jobs or else. I'm not going to go soft it does them no good. I refuse to be this old man and still have kids living here off my pension. They gotta go. Some times ya gotta have some tearing before the wound heals and things get better. Kinda like a tooth ache. It hurts but your so afraid to have it pulled cuz it's gonna hurt but once it's done the pain goes away.

Sure they get ticked but they'll be the better for us tossing their butt's out. Stop giving money and tell them to dumpster dive like we used to do. We still buy furniture from the thrift store. The chair I knit in came from there. Very comfy just right size for my butt. They won't die. Some kids you can teach to swim others ya just gotta throw them in the water. If they drowned ,they drowned. They wont', we sure didn't. Gotta have some confidence in them to survive.

Got my flu shot last time I went to docs. So I should be good. Oh but the two geniuses are sick so GD is watching GD. So far so good. I say if their still alive at 5:00 I've done a good job. Even if they do smell like poop. I get nervous wiping those little butts.

Well she fussin gotta go rock my baby.

ta, ta, for now

no Tv
used rocker, in fact Im in the process of recovering it.
sofa came after 2 babies and 4 years . Kids now a- days dont want to sweat
to earn.We made ours work starting household
chores ,gardening and you names it.at 16 they all did their own laundry.
and took care of their own room.
5 kids later, we all pitched in to keep things going smoothly

HELLO everyone !

It was a long day yesterday and it us starting EARLY today.

ROAD TRIP yesterday for 7 hours. . . I went to a couple of BYCers homes to pick up some hatching eggs. I had a dozen of my own eggs, and then picked up 1 1/2 dozen Delaware eggs and 1 dozen marans eggs.

There is NOT enough space left in my incubator for ONE more egg.

If this works, Dh is going to need a BIGGER cooler!

TODAY, I am waking the children up an hour early so that I can take my son to the orthdonist. Poor boy has the worst of both his parents in just about every trait - - - including - - teeth!

Then, I will have to take them to school.

I hope I wore dad out yesterday, because I will be napping today !

Good for you Math ace you need the rest. It is soooo hard keeping up with everyone and all of their needs.
We had a right old busy day yesterday too. NO road trips for us though sadly.
I do hope the eggs incubation goes well. - I can;t do any of that now at this point in the year here as it will rapidly get colder over these next few weeks. Last year it got to -20 something in parts of the uk. Too cold for baby chicks!!!!!!!

Managed to survive the class last night! Actually I did sit out most of it so no flat tummy for me this week! -
Then I escaped for an hour with Dotty and we had a really good one to one chat and quality time together which was good.
I think from what I can gather things are not as rosie in the garden as she would like that to be. I reminded her that nothing is in stone and if she is not happy she has to make those choices herself. There isn't much else I can do but remind her that she isn't married and while she isn't there are still other doors open to her longterm.
I kind of knew all was not as it should be and that was why she was sooo low and not really wanting to bond with Jess. She cannot turn back time - Its not like an unwanted puppy dog - she can't return this little parcel!!!! which says a lot for where she is at right now and yet in the next breath she is talking of marriage and engagements etc. - I just don;t want her to feel she has to marry him because of Jessica. That really is not the answer and not the best start to a marriage. The world has changed a lot in the last 50 yrs - you don't HAVE to do that anymore.

Anyhow it was good to have that time. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do for the best these days???????

I do think your right - Rancher/ Math ace/ Sissy
We cannot protect our kids from everything all of the time - sometimes we just have to let them go and make their own mistakes in life as we did!!!!
A wee bit of dumpster diving and hard graft wont kill them and neither will - making hard life changing choices!!!!!

I do think though we can all be a bit like my old BERTHA hen -
Still trying to brood our chicks when they are fully grown and despireately grabbing their feet and dragging them from the roosting bar of life - just incase they hurt themselves up there???? We prefer to squash them than let them figure things out themselves!!!!!!!! - Sometimes I think we can learn a lot from our chickens!!!!!!

Hope you all have a good day - I am for coffee right now and a big big big cream bun!!!!!

Oesdog - Have Jessy today so am rocking the cradle - On later

Good morning/afternoon people,

Coffee, scramble eggs and kaiser rolls for breakfast

Weather: woke up to 34degs, overcast. Today, mid 60's chance of showers.

Continuing to work on the Bean D'villie. I am hoping to have it done by the beginning of next week. I usually get to take a 20min power nap in the late afternoon. Just close the ole eyes, and I am out. They think it is funny how I can do it.

Math Ace: What will you do with all these chickens?

Chics in the sun: We have 3 chicks (The 3 Musketeers), their broody mother (Miss Henny Penny) and Miss Bean all in one pen at the moment. The other day I had to move them. Miss Henny Penny didn't mind me moving the 3 Musketeers, but Miss Bean did. The little ...... fluffed right up and attacked my feet with her beak and talons. She wasn't a happy camper. The really funny part, she is molting, so there wasn't much to fluff, but she gave me her all.

Have a good day

Kaj

Good morning to all having my coffee and doing alittle work. Woke up to 56 degrees on its way up to 85 with plenty of sun, what a great time of the year. Everybody have a great day and better night. It is almost TGIF.

Whew, busy busy day today. Gotta keep this short. That's a funny story, Kaj - poor girl, trying to be fierce while half - naked! Sunshine actually lets me pick the babies up -she doesn't like it, but she does let me without attacking. I think she will be okay with a few less of them. The brooder cage is 5 x 3 feet, so there is plenty of room for now, but as they get bigger it will be a bit crowded. I can open it up to the rest of the coop, but I'm not sure when I should let the big girls near them. Maybe in a few weeks I'll let them free-range together and see how it goes. For some reason the Marans is the most curious, and will pace up and down the cage watching the babies. Sunshine rushes at her and flaps her wings, but the Marans doesn't really look like she wants to peck them or anything. I'm not sure why, but she is quite interested in them.

Well, gotta work on a report due tomorrow. It's to count the kids in my program, and the numbers are really low right now. That is good for society in general, however with numbers this low I will probably be assigned to a second school next year.

Have a great day!
