Coffee's ready...

Good Morning All!
My stepson & new daughter- in-law left to go home to Louisianna Sunday morning.

I have made a monster in her - she can't wait to start raising Ameruacanas! They are making a home for the babies and I have found some one in Louisianna to hatch out a shipment of eggs for her ( very kind of him). She is starting on BYC this week. They stayed for a week and I have to tell you, they are perfect as people can be. Just a joy to have around. I was hoping my spread out batch of eggs would hatch a couple before they left but my broodies have been having a hard time this brood.
Chicks are due yesterday through this Thursday.
I had 4 broodies but I broke one because I was losing eggs and I found her with yolk on her beak.
The others have been trading eggs back and forth. I lost 4 eggs to the bad egg eating broodie before I realized what was going on.
But since then, I have been losing an egg a day.
I Started with 15 fetile eggs.
Yesterday there were 8
Today there are 7
I am losing an egg a day.
I wonder if i have an egg eating snake coiled up in the corner or something that I can't see.
Do you think if I took everything out of the coop, rebedded it, and replaced the eggs this late in incubation that I would break all my broodies?

Don't think I will be able to do that tonight though, I'm going out with my sister to JCPennys to see about buying a new dress for my cousin's wedding on Friday. I told her I didn't need one but she said "they're old" I said "they are in like new condition and pretty" She said "we've seen them all - over and over"

She might be right. Just hate to spend money on things I only wear to church or special occasions. I used to dress up alot but I have a foot issue that will never get better and will eventually lead to total incapacitation of the foot so I can't wear anything but some flat sandles and tennis shoes anymore. Sis says: " and you're not wearing tennis shoes to the wedding"

Guess I'll go barefoot.

We have had a bad time here with a broody too! I am pretty sure she ate and distroyed eggs last year but this year she killed her chicks as soon as they hatched! BAD GERTY!!!!!

Last year Bertha was sitting eggs and one exploded over her bottom! It was very smelly and not at all nice. I had to pop her out of the nest and remove all the eggs
then I had to take her out and wash her bum under the outside tap! Poor critter. Then she watched while I dried her off and made up a fresh nest popped the good eggs back in and sat her back on the top. She went on to have 5 live chicks hatch! This was near the end of the brood and it went ok but then Bertha is a one in a million hen she didn;t stop sitting on her chicks until they were 18weeks old!!!!!!!!!! Bigger than she is!!!!!!!

Oesdog - good luck, my eggs are due to hatch tomorrow???? One is seeping so I know it is dead and probably may explode but they are in lock down in the incubator as Bertha hurt her leg.

Hi again,

Things here are busy and I haven't had time to follow what's going on. I've been working on getting the new hoop coop done and going to the Docs. Not to mention spending to much time on the computer that DW is complaining. But then why wouldn't she? Coming home from work to fine the sink full of dishes and things not done.

I've gone from one coop and 25 chickens to three and 75. Or there abouts. Grass needs to be mowed and well you get the picture. Plus all my other hobbies. Boxes of Jam and now I'm looking at learning to sew those poly bags into shopping bags. I also have to go to the YMCA to swim and try to lose some weight. Lord have mercy.

I really am sorry, I should check in more often. I hope everyone is doing well.

Oesdog I looked into sending you some jars of jam but Lord have mercy it would be cheaper to send you money to buy some over there. My DD and hers bought a used suit case and put the baby swing in it and paid the $25 charge to take it back to TX on the plane. It was cheaper than buying one or packing it up and mailing it. I'd actually thought about flying over there and bringing you the jam.

It is hit and miss with us. I am inland, so I get missed by a lot of the storms. I am in North Florida which stays dries than south Florida too.
Chics probably gets more rain than I do.

I wish we got more...

Yep, we've gotten quite a bit of rain this season. In fact, it's pouring down as I sit here. So much for finishing the thatch roof on the coop this morning.

Maybe it will dry up a bit later and I can work on it. It's just me and the youngest two today - BF took off work to take the oldest one to her high school orientation, and then later his own orientation at USF. Finishing the roof was my project to keep them busy today. Oh well. I am determined to have it all done and move the chickens into the aviary before I go back to work.

Wow! It's coming down in buckets!

Oesdog - I would love Rhubarb jam. Or wine! Don't get too busy, Rancher!

Have a good day chicken peeps.

So I went to the Y and jumped into an aerobic exercise class. I was one of only three men and probably the youngest. I had a good time just the same. Everyone is nice.

Yes Karl things are busy. There is plenty to do. Somethings take longer when you do them by yourself.

The BR's got moved to the new hoop coop and don't know what to make of it. Now I have to build the run. Help me Jesus. My SIL is here but he's no help at all. Lord have mercy.

Oesdog - I know you have jam there, but not jam that I made. Recipes are the same but we each have our own touches. In my case the clean up is a bit more work than I'm sure you have. It was just a thought.

Since it is raining I'll use that as an excuse to rest but I will have to do the dishes. I mentioned the car seat was outside to each of them and neither rushed out to bring it in out of the rain. Lord how I have failed my youngest child in instilling a good work ethic.

The chickens have covered runs so they can get some air. I have plans to send some extras to an auction on Sunday. I will never understand this Sunday thing. Seems to me not going is like not going to the doctors. Then too going and not doing what is preached is like going to the doctors and not taking your medicine. One is spiritual the other physical of course. Just the same I hate when they have things on Sunday. Don't they know I NEED to go to church.

Well I do hope everyone is doing well today. Lord keep us all in these troubled times- Amen.

Take care

Rancher
