Coffee's ready...

Hello! It is a rainy on and off day here in PR, but it makes this cup of coffee all the more better.

This is sorta off topic, but I was wondering what type of materials I could make my coop out of that would protect it from
the rain. I would like to make it out of wood, but is there something I could coat the wood with so that it is rain proof and
wont rot as fast? I am going to build it on a concrete floor that is outside that is left over from a company that we use to
rent out to. Oh and it is not going to be a very big coop maybe as big as Gargoyles coop.

For our roof we used the corrugated transparent plastic or fiberglass panels, sloped so rain runs off. Underneath, nailed to the studs we have hardware cloth in case a raccoon eats though the roof panel.

One section of the roof is wood, and I had a left over bundle of asphalt shingles; put down a sheet of exterior plywood and nailed the shingles up there, it's been good so far.

Good to see someone drinking coffee here again!

hello theuglyduckling. & Gargoyle.

Our coops are framed with Douglas Fir and the sidings is 1" rough cut pine. They sit up off the ground with plenty of ventilation underneath.

hey Gargoyle, the "shed" I am working on is part barn??? Floor to ridge is 11', little over 8' tall walls. The floor is rough cut green 1" white oak. I am going to have polycarbonate(?) roofing on half the roof and half the south wall for a green house effect.

Enjoy the evening

Hi everyone - sorry that I have not been on a lot recently. Lots going on here as ever.
Good to get to read your posts. Hope all is going well with the cows and crops etc.
I lost my 5th hen since January a few days back.
We have them on Tylan but not sure it will do any good.

Hey Oesdog.... I betcha I have been gone longer than you LOL...
What's up with the birds? Do you know why you are losing them?
Hope the latest one recovers.

Busy....Man can I relate.

My coffee pot just dinged that it is DONE. I need to grab a cup of joe and head out to start chicken chores.

TTYL (Talk To You Later) that is OLD SCHOOL speak. IDK if it still applies in TODAY speak.

Well Big Hello MathAce and Osedog......Good to see you 2 here and keeping busy. What else is there to do? We lost a egg layer a couple of weeks back. We were away to our little rat's wedding when we received the message. We are trying turkeys this year, and it looks like we have a tom and a hen.
Anyways enjoy your day

I am not sure what is killing the girls. It is weird because I am lossing one every 4-6 weeks. So I have lost 5 since January and another is sick now. - Infact four out of the 5 I have left show signs of respiritory infection. I am thinking if the Tylan doesn;t work it will be a cull and scrub and hose everything and start over. I am deeply upset at the loss especially as now I only have two of my original girls left and I lost one of their last remaining two chicks a few days back DARN!

Mable was a lovely girl too! Now I only have Isobella and caroline and they are the trouble makers. ( I always called them and gerty the Buzzards! lol - Though lost gerty a few eeks back. She lay dead in the yard out of the blue and had never shown signs of being sick. We thought it was heart failure as she was withdrawn since her sister Bertha died.)

Great to be back chatting again. -

Wow! seems everyone is so busy with spring and summer chores we are forgetting our friends. I have been out straight trying to get ready for the move to KY. Buyer I had for the house just backed out so we are back to square one. Same because I might miss out on a couple of nice homes in Louisville.
Oes. sorry to hear of your girls passing.
talked to the Louisville animal control office <1/2 acre 5 chickens and 1 rooster (no you can't have 6 and no rooster); over and acre and you can have all you want. asked between 1/2 and full acre and was told < 1/2 acre 5 & 1. Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh bureaucrats.

Going to try the St. Joseph thingy.
