Jowl bacon for me. One of the first things I would remove at a pig roast. It's the only place I would find it.

My cholesterol was so far out of whack, my doctor didn't care how much I smoked.

I've sometimes fried up some ham instead of bacon. Sausages work too. But it's the kind of stuff I only try to eat about once a week max.

Morning,
Another cool morning, feels like it is starting to be a trend now. We pulled the last of the carrots from the garden, tomatoes are slowing down and turning yellow. The only thing really left in the beds are kale, collard greens, swiss chard, and pole beans. The leaves on the trees are just starting to change. I haven't seen any geese flying by yet.

Thank you Rngrbill and Felix. It's out national symbol/bird, the bald eagle. It's starting to make a come back in the area. There is a island on the river that the public access has been closed. There is a breeding pair on it.

Reindeer keepers used to hunt those down around here (illegally), until they started a program where they're paid according to how many breeding pairs they find in their pasture grounds. The numbers have started going up since.

Many active breeding pairs in NJ. I live fairly close to a large lake/reservoir that is stocked with lake trout. There is a minimum legal size. Some anglers horse them up causing their swim bladders to rupture. As soon as someone has a fish on line the eagles start circling their boat - hoping that they will be releasing an injured fish.

Quite a lovely place Q.
Bald eagles have made a solid come back all over the country and I believe I is due to the ban on the use of .D.D.T . ,The effect of it was that the poison got into all the prey animals and when the raptors ate them the eggs that they would lay had very thin shells causing them to be too fragile to incubate .
All along the Illinois river thy now live and breed, I have witnessed them fishing ad flying on many occasions. The juveniles lack the white crest , but are very majestic non the less.
We have laws protecting all birds of prey in this country I believe, and I find it very annoying when the birds are preying on my flock. I called the D.N.R. to see if I could shoot a great horned owl once and they very generously offered to send out an officer to tell me how to protect my flock," keep them in the barn" but I said no thanks. This would be another govt intrusion into my life, I think the great horned owl was an intrusion into my chickens ability to free range, but a law is a law. The problem was the owl hunted as soon as we left the house or as soon as the sun set . If I did not close the coop up fast enough he would fly into the coop kill a chicken and fly out with it. The power of that animal was amazing. One morning I came out of the house and he was frozen in a tree !
He literally could not get off of the limb. It had dropped below freezing by about 15 degree suddenly and the poor owl could not get off of the limb. I got the children up to go look at him, as I thought that this is as close as they will ever get to one of those animals while it is alive . I really whish i would have shot him but I could not kill him even though I wished to.

Well now this reminds me of my research into Rat Poison and it's use to get rid of my squirrel problem. Seems that it's not a quick kill and other animals such as Fox, Coyote and Hawks might find and eat these sick and dying animals. They in turn get poisoned, by the anticoagulants in these types of things. Basically they bleed to death.

So whats my point? Used around the farm they can also poison your cats, dogs or chickens.

As for your owl it must have been cool to see one in the wild. I've not seen an owl in the wild. At least not since I can remember.

I've seen the fake ones to deter pigeons but nothing to deter owls. Perhaps a scarecrow?

Large owls are terrifying and mesmerizing in person. I could never kill one. No matter what it killed of mine ( the exception being my kids)
Wonder if a decoy would keep an owl away, an owl decoy or big cat... A scare crow.
I'm a live trap person, lol, can't even kill a pack rat. Trap and release. Had a fix a round the coop once, my dog did nothing ( I had to chase it off) seems my dogs as passive as me, hence my getting a second dog.
