Coffee's ready...

Is that a circle of fencing? You get enough potatoes for how long? We go through a lot of potatoes.
Yeah, it's a circle, about half a meter wide. I just used spare pieces I had left, but it could be a bit bigger, maybe 2½ feet wide would be the maximum I would go. You're supposed to be able to grow about 30-40 kg in one tower, but we like new potatoes and harvested enough for one meal a bit early (also, the chickens have been eating the leaves which really cuts down on production). The straw lining really keeps moisture in nicely, so they're relatively care free. I wouldn't completely depend on these the first time you try them, but you could start with maybe four towers and see how they do. We are more hobby farmers than people who depend on our garden, so we like experimenting. If you have many mouths to feed, harvesting these would be really easy too, you could just tip the tower over when it's time to collect potatoes. Now we just dug around there a bit and collected from the top layer, it gave us about a liter of new potatoes, but there's still plenty left in them and if we have the patience to wait longer the potatoes will grow bigger. We also used an early maturing variety to get the kind of potatoes we like, but with something a bit slower growing that reaches bigger size you could get a pretty nice amount of taters.

Bet you can't beat Bubba's amount of different dishes though. I wish I had invested in some kind of fruit company.

I think we are all Hobby Farmers. Anything we save by growing it ourselves counts.

I like the tower idea because it would be easier than digging to harvest them. My backs not so good for that type of stuff, which is why I use raised beds.
For my garlic I just pulled them up. Weeding is easier too. Some years are better than others.

With the garlic beds I covered them with newspapers and garden fabric after harvest. So the weeds won't grow.

What kind of potatoes do you grow? Where do you get your starters?

That is a beautiful garden. Black plastic would keep nutrients from being washed away, and thaw the ground quicker in spring. Might even get some composting action going on under there.

Good morning chicken wranglers,
Rancher, I get seed potato's every couple of years , but for the last 2 seasons I have just planted my own starters from the previous seasons.
Last night we dug up a few taters to see how they are going to be, and they look good. I've only planted russet and goldens. I like the russets best because the skin is much more solid. I love to eat the skins of baked potato's but the russets are not for baking "supposedly" . I think a taters a tater. We picked a butt load of cucumbers last night and lovey is home making pickles today {bless her heart]. She has also started some sour kraut, . This is my first year with cabbage and I was surprised to find more heads growing on the plants that I had already picked. The broccoli is another hearty plant that I love to grow and pick until late fall. The tomato's are starting to ripen ,We only got 3 good one s last night but the harvest will come all at once and we will can from dawn to dusk for a couple of weeks. Spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, salsa ,and juice, my wife is quite the home maker. Oh yeh I almost forgot tonight is fried Okra, and b. l . t .'s for dinner
Have to go now God Bless!
