Yeah Rancher it did kind of sound like you were a wee bit - weird!!!! Like you wanted to watch the gits flying and all that! - I am interested in the plucking machines etc. I would like to get more into meat birds but its hard cause I love all mine so much!!!! I have to decide on which ROoo to dispatch soon???? One is a fantastic Maran x Leghorn he is getting a really big boy and lovely to look at. A real strong fellow. ( Gerty's boy!) Then there is Nugget ( Drumsticks boy.) He is PR X Leghorn. Sometimes starts fights with Mable his sister they both attack as a tag team and are quite scary! However Nugget is a beautiful dark red and Drumstick his mum lays everyday - when she is well! So I was hoping if he had chicks they would be good layers. I heard Marans are good for meat??? So its hard to chose - then there is my wee Blue ! He is such a boney creacher compared to the others. He is easy to work with as he was hand reared and so is docile and loves to be caried about. He is a rare breed Cream legbar with the blue egg gene - if I put him to the Marans I should get chicks that lay blue/ green eggs???? Other than pretty colours - well DH says he can;t kill him so I would need to get someone else to do it as both Blue and Omlet are our babies - hand reared no mother hen kind of stuff. So we call them the kids. But reality is we cannot keep all the boys so what do you guys think????

Duck - Maranxleghorn Nugget Production Red x Leghorn or little Blue the cream legbar???? He just hangs with Omlet were only starting to get those two into the flock without the others killing them. They are much smaller and younger than the others.

Oesdog - Any thoughts????

And to think I thought you would have known me better by now. I am disappointed. Not really but maybe a little.

Rancher I wish I could send my boys over there then I wouldn't have to worry or watch!!!! - Oh yeah I did edit the gits for guts but your guys copied and posted before I corrected myself!!!!

Good Morning! I do love Thanksgiving - I really had a great day - as well as the day after when I just take it easy and eat leftovers. I did also work on the coop expansion and got the frame and roost put together yesterday. I wanted to paint it first thing this morning so it could dry and I could attach it to the main coop this afternoon, but it rained last night and it is too wet to paint. The rain is a good thing, though. We needed it.

Sounds like everyone had a nice holiday. Rancher, I'm glad yours turned out nice, and Karl, it must have been neat to eat a turkey you raised yourself. How big was it? I fixed a 16 pounder and have A LOT of leftover meat.

Oesdog -If you put the cream legbar to the Marans, you would get Olive-Eggers due to the dark Marans eggs. If you put him to the RIR or any other lighter brown layers, you will get lighter, blue-green eggs. I'd keep the Legbar, but that is just because I can't get any here and would love to have one.

Well, guess I find something else to do with myself this morning since I can't work outside yet. It looks like it may rain more soon, too. I'll go check the weather and plan my day accordingly. Have a good one, chicken peeps!

Glad you had a good time chics.
I was planning to use the Cream Legbar for that chicks. I wanted Blue/green eggs. But my neighbor is giving hastle again and Duck has started crowing. I mean I can probably hide one Rooo boy but not 3 of them!!!! If I could I would have kept Blue and Duck. Mainly because as you say Marans = Olive Eggers and Duck is 90% Maran so I can breed the Leghorn out of the flock. Hes a lovely boy - gosh I would post him to you if I could. I sooo wish I could keep the Marans for Meat and eggs and use those two boys to get the Blue/green eggs in the flock. But I would have to be careful regarding the meat side of it - I mean I would have to put bands on Gerty and Omlets legs so they don;t get put in a pot by mistake. Omlet is my baby!!!! She is a pet and wont be going anyplace!!!!! I LOVE HER!!! The Legbar is a far better nature than the other two Roos mainly cause I have handled him loads, him not having a mummy hen and all. I can carry him about all day and he just lays in my arms like a baby!!! The others squalk and flutter about and all that carry on.

Anyhow I am away as the day has been very stressed and DH is very ill today he is getting a lot worse and nothing seems able to be done.

Good morning everyone!

My first egg from Willow yesterday! Woot! And I found out that Willow isn't a welsummer - she's a brown Leghorn! So, I expect lots and lots of white eggs from her.

Took DD to Macy's yesterday to get a nice piece of luggage at the Black Friday sale. She ended up with a gorgeous purplish Samsonite bag that'll keep her stuff happy. Tonight she can pack it up and tomorrow, bright and early, she gets on a plane back to college.

She bonded right away with the divas and has been telling all her friends "I have chicks in my closet!" (Their brooder is in the guestroom closet for now.) I sense chickens in her future... ;-)

Off to check on whether Buffy laid her egg yet.

Cheryl - hope you're doing okay. Nice to see you check in.

to you and Larry!

Good morning all

Here I am, up at o-dark-thirty, to drive DD to the airport for her flight back to college. It was so nice having her here. I'm really gonna miss her.

The chickens are addictive. I've already been thinking about my "next" chickens... Whaaaat? Nonononono. No room.

Good Morning!!

I have almost completed my third addition to the coop - yes, Annaraven, the are VERY addictive. I got a White Leghorn that was supposed to be an Ameraucana, and I just love her. She is one of my favorite hens, despite her wacky personality. She is actually pretty calm if you do catch her and hold her on your lap. She is also the one that was broody and hatched the chicks. You'll enjoy her eggs - I miss them since she went broody, and now she is molting.

Rancher - you two look precious. Do be careful sleeping like that, though. I'm just paraonoid about it because I have to keep up on all the research about SIDS deaths for work.

Well, breaks about over, time to drag BF outside to help me screw the new section onto the original coop. That's just too difficult to do alone - I will have to interupt his studies.
Have a great day!!!
