Coffee's ready...

Hello, folks! Just wanted to check in. I am feeling better now after spending a weekend in the Keys. We went Scuba diving yesterday, and kayaked twice while there. The weather was perfect, and it was so relaxing. I saw a wild Iguana, a stray EE with lovely coloring, peacocks, my first lion fish (an invasive species), several nurse sharks, a sting ray, and hundreds of tropical fish. Now I'm in a mad rush trying to pack for a road trip up to Ohio with my parents - kind of a family reunion up at a state park.

Beautiful pictures, Rancher! And it sounds like your girl is quite talented, Karl. I'm always jealous of people that can sing - which is most of the members of my family except myself and my grandmother. My brother even sang/ played several instruments in a band with Bob Dylan's nephew. They are all talented and I'm hoping my son took after them instead of me! Math Ace, it sounds like you have your hands full - hang in there. Or just drop it all and take off for the Keys like I did.

And welcom, Chickylove.

Have a wonderful week, chicken wranglers! I'll stop by for coffee when I return.

Good morning chicken wranglers
Rancher that is a good looking flock. The one in the stroller is a cutie also.
Chics like I said I know the talent does not come from me,"my brother even said Are you sure she is yours?because niether of us can even hum in tune"What a butt head".
And I might doubt it but she is so pretty and looks so much like me that at times I'm not sure who her mother is!
Only jest".
Well got A HARD DAY GOD BLESS!

Ugh - Gerty has gone broody!!!! Can;t get her out of the darn coop!!! Last year she was trying to steel Berthas nest and chicks - remember her fixation with brooding mice cause she didn;t have chicks. But she wouldn;t sit either. She would sit for about 2 hrs tops then get borred and go out to play! Now I have to keep dumping her off the nest! I feel sorry for her as secretly I want chicks but DH doesn;t because they are not cost affective and my chicken Math gets out of hand and - we end up with roos I want to keep but can;t!!!

Had the boat out but had to bring her in as it was getting low tide. Loads of fun NO FISH though!!!!
Plently of coffee all round and banana bread though!!!

I bet! To answer you questions, yes, it is mama Sunshine that appears to be laying internally. Sky and Ginger are her two babies, but they are not the least bit friendly like she is.
I have been trying to incorporate the new SLW for going on a month, I think. It is mainly my meanie Marans, Madelide, that torments her. I've never heard a chicken scream like that. Its terrible. There has only been a tiny bit of blood, but it is still concerning.

Good morning chicken wranglers
2 inches of rain at my house last night. The pond is happy, and its dUcks als:hmmne of the boys that was fishing last night caught a 2# large mouth bass,I made him through it back.We put 50 in 2 years ago and I have only seen 2 ,counting that one, since.I'm hoping that they will repopulate the pond and get the carp populatoion under control.
Chics ,Matth,I thought the wild fires were in arizona,Iwas in Orlando earlier this year and it was really dry but I haven't heard anything about the fires in Fla.Hope it rains for you guys soon. What is laying internally? Sounds awfully messy and perhaps fatal!
Oesdog,Raise the chicks and just promise to cull the roosters after all it is easier to get forgiveness than it is to get permisssion!
God Bless!

Well I'm here in TX and it's hot. Not much to do outside cuz they live in an apt. complex. They do have a nice pool though but I haven't been in it yet.

To busy holding Henry. His dad's into sports so I bought him his first soccer ball.

'course I'll be to old to play with him by the time he can kick it.

Ok Karl - unfortunately DH decided if we were getting chicks HE would decide what ones! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! So anyhow he ordered 6 fertile eggs off the internet - bog standard Leghorns!!!! They wont arrive for 5 days!!!! Then he said oh we can go to see someone at a local farm and see if they have eggs and sure you can always bung them under her later and it will be fine!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I have tried to explain the dynamics of this concept but to no avail!! I cannot just pop a few eggs under Gerty today and then the rest next week because he doesn;t understand as soon as the first ones are hatched she will abandon the rest!!!!! ( Gerty gets borred and probably will give up being broody by the time the Leghorns arrive anyhow!!!) HE DOESN:T GET THIS NO MATTER HOW OFTEN I TELL HIM!!!! Now he reckons he is going to get an incubator as well "just in case" So a few eggs that would cost me £5-£10 tops is now costing much more. If she didn;t sit them I was going to give her a hug and some feed and say never mind and bin them!!

He said he didn;t want to waist money on Roos - so I said well the Legbar chicks are auto sexing? Then I said you can do the boys in at birth and feed them to the Ferrit because we will know for certain they are BOYS!!! So anyhow he completely ignored this suggestion! ( Which was of course hard for me because I lost my lovely Roo boy Blue last year!!!) Anyhow then he says he is going to get a fishtank and convert it. He was also talking about auto turning - but I said its more important to get the humidity and temp right than worry about turning them twice a day anyone can do that!!!

So - KARL - I am blaming you!!!!!!!!

This is not entirely true if you have a brooder to put the first chicks in as they hatch. Just take them from her and she will stay on the unhatched eggs.

I just did this with my hen and she stayed to hatch the last one. Then what you can do is try to put them back when she is done hatching all the eggs. Of course do this at night.

Give the first chicks a chance to dry off and then just reach in and take them. She will go back and hatch the rest.

You might want to mark the eggs so you'll know which are which and candle any that don't hatch at the appointed time.

In fact if she doesn't break you can keep putting eggs under her and she'll just keep right on hatching.

Tkae care
