Here in Northern MI, a lot of people collect Petoskey stones. Here are some we've found:

Some places to find them are around rivers and lakes, especially in the spring, after the first big snow/ice melts.

I think they are some kind of fossilized coral, and here is what they supposedly looked like when they were alive:

I love these! I was actually talking to someone recently about trading for a Petoskey stone. I love it when the edges are still slightly raised giving the rock a geometric look. They're really cool!
 
Petrified wood. I found this piece about 100' from my house. I suspect it came from the gravel pit down by the river and was dumped as part of a load of gravel when they were working on the road.

6 1/2" in length by 4 1/2" in width by 4 1/2" in height.

The chert I have found does not look anything like this.

I have to agree but 3 people have said the same thing now so I guess it's just an unusual piece of chert? :idunno You got me, I was convinced you had your chicken's ancestor on display. lol!
