If my bresse are going broody 1 by 1 then I'm in trouble, as I only have 3 bresse pullets and this is my preferred meat breed.

I have 8 out of 10 cx still being little muddy eating meatballs in the yard, but it looks like freezer camp is coming much sooner than later :)

Thank you for the kind words, everyone. I'm still pretty upset because my brother has been pretty disrespectful to me about the entire thing. I mean, his dog ate the chick right in front of me, left me a leg to bury & just says "I guess I wasn't watching her closely". No offer to try & make things better in any fashion. I don't know. I mean, I'm very attached to animals & the whole emotions thing has been out of control due to the brain trauma, but an actual apology would go a long way with me right now. Maybe I'm overreacting.

Here's where the remaining chicks are in their development. Memnoch (formally Frost) & Mercury no longer fit in 1 hand. Finally. I thought they'd be little hobbit versions of chickens forever. The other Phoenix chick chirped a LOT right after the other was killed, but now the d'Anvers chick has taken over that behavior. It sits where the dead Phoenix used to & just chirps as loud as it can. The little d'Uccle continues to crack me up with the leg feathers.

My dad & mom got the coop frame up & placed next to the pen. He also got the nesting boxes & half the roof built. I haven't had a chance to get started on the grow out pen due to the weather this week, but the M&M twins are gonna need a bigger boat real soon.

I don't think you aware over reacting, I believe he owes you an apology. That is my opinion. Now let's focus on the cuties that you have. OMG The feathered foot is too cute! The M&M twins are getting so big and those the other Phoenix is pretty, can't wait to see what they turn into. Glad to hear that you dad is making progress on the coop, how exciting. The weather is wet! Our pens around the coop are a muddy & straw mush pit at this point. I will be glad when we dry off. Today is the beginning of week 2 for the babies. I will take some shots as I have been able to sex them based on their wings and most of their wings are done coming in and they are now working on their tails. I will post pictures later.

I agree, you are not over reacting. Those are some cuties!!!

Yep, wet mess here too, but am thankful we are not in a drought like other parts of the country!

I have nine in the brooder, mostly, Bantam Cochins this go around.

Sounds like your brother is being very insensitive and basically a jerk, so you have a right to be upset with him. I think that I would put up something to make sure those dogs can not get anywhere near the chicks, because the chicks are going to test every possible way of getting out, being rambunctious teenagers and all.

NO WHY DID YOU SAY THAT BECUASE I REALLLYYYYY W ANT ONE of those Pyrenees but my parents said NOOOOOOOOOOOOO more dogs lol and I'm SOOO sorry for your loss my brother is a big jerk to he almost killed one of my silkie crossed yesterday by picking it up no dropping it.... And your not over reacting at all the same thing happened 3 years ago back when I live in PA and I went on vacation to Jamaica and my SLW roo Ruger got killed the last day by a Pomeranian but she kept torturing my chickens with it she would let it out everyday and luckily it didn't get the hens but we think he sacrificed himself for the ladies.

I just love your babies

Hi gang,

So what's is everyone's experience in introducing chicks to a broody hen, specifically has anyone had luck introducing week old chicks to a broody? I am hoping that my Dark Cornish is finally broody again, she had a bare breast and is sitting on golf balls this am for hours. Our babies are a week old today and I was just curious what your experiences have been like. Thanks so much in advance for the knowledge you all share.

PS - I took her off the golf balls at around 11:30 when I took some kale out to the gang. When I just collected eggs at 12:20 she was back on the same nest sitting on golf balls. I am going to let her be and then see if I can get her moved tomorrow night, if she is serious, to the small coop blocked from others on the balls for another day or so and then try to slip her a few chicks at night. I understand it is just trial and error and each hen differs. I am hopeful at this point as these guys are a feisty bunch and will outgrow their in the house brooder by next weekend. If she doesn't stay broody then I will be building the mama hen heating pad broody and set that up in the small coop with part of the run blocked from the rest of the gang. That is my plan and hope right now.

Aw, what cute chicks!!!

After the fox got my two favorites, we decided to order some chicks, even though I swore we wouldn't get any this year. So now you all have me looking forward to my delivery in two weeks! And then, my SIL asked if I could take her chickens, so we are going to be swimming in birds. More to the point, eggs!! Any ideas on what to do with all the eggs?

Is broody momma top of the pecking order? Also, is she sitting on the ground level or up in a nest box? Important things to consider. I have had the best luck putting chicks under a broody momma late at night. It has not worked for me putting them out during the day. I do a bread test on my broodies, throw bread down for the hens, and if momma is still sitting, and doesn't get off the nest, then she is definitely broody.

Nice you are getting chicks! Hmmm, what to do with all the eggs???? Some cakes call for lots of eggs, also, you can put them in plastic bags and in the freezer.

So putting some feelers out there if anyone here would be interested in any Bantam Cochin hatching eggs...........
