Colored Chicks? Crazy! Must see

Gate, I've read that article. I know there are scientific reasons at times and they use dye for identification purposes. I know that they veg dye doesn't hurt them. My contention is that these chicks are dyed at this time of year (grrr) and are lures for all sorts of ill-informed people to make impulse purchases for their chickie-torturing kids. And I dont think we should put artificial color on a chicken to make people want to buy them. They ought to go to the Dollar Store and buy a wind-up toy instead.

So, that's my input. They are the grossest things I've ever seen in a feedstore window. JMHO and I'm sticking to it.

I understand there had been past posts. I'm not to worried, they will change and look normal when thier feathers grow in! Although I kinda don't like it.

this is exactly why it concerns me. Little kids get a chick and then no one feeds it properly, gets it a companion, takes care of it at all and it dies within weeks.

I was lucky enough to stick my nose in someone elses business at the feed store - kid had a chick dad was gonna buy it. I stuck my nose in and told them exactly what he had to do. They put the chick back... Second time in two weeks that's happened.

SH I own a Wind Up monkey that plays the cymbals, a pig that squeals and flips, a dog that barks and wags its tail. Im a sucker for wind up battery toys

I know for me personally, the Easter when we got the colored chicks and ducklings was the best Easter I ever had. Its the one I remember the most, if not the only one I remember.

Everyone tends to only look at the few bad results from something instead of weighing all the good that could come of it. How bout the kids that never get to be around chicks or ducks and by getting one at Easter, grows up to have a small farm or just an appreciation for animals. How about the people that never contemplated getting chickens until they saw the colored chicks at Easter and think, that would be something we could do! How about the kid that picks out their favorite color chick, babies it and it lives a spoiled life til it dies.

These are still just chickens, the creatures we consume by the millions as food. Yes I know, gasssp, I can't believe she just said that!!! But these are not human babies being painted so that they get adopted! Hatcheries are throwing thousands of male chicks away daily, but heaven forbid if a random chick or two, dyed a temporary color, is petted and hugged by a family until it goes to a forever home or is even set loose somewhere and becomes lunch for a hawk or other wild creature (yay for them- they have to live too).

Don't get me wrong, my chickens are spoiled rotten and I love them to death, but I don't get why this is such a debated topic. Seems like there are way more important issues where animals and people are really being permanently hurt, that we should be focussing our concerns.

. These laws were to prevent what kryptoniteqhs mentioned about impulse buyers at Easter then not knowing what to do with the chicks when they begin to grow. They were in all kinds of stores years ago and kept in the worst conditions, very sad.

THey dont always enforce it.I bought five banty chicks before and some BYC member who will not be named sold me three ducklings.

I'm with you, PineBurrow...I don't know...I'm on the fence. I think they're cute, and now I'm looking at my 2 white Silkies with a gleem in my eye...LOL. However, I certainly see the objection with it not being natural (but then again, my red hair isn't natural either), and possibly causing impulse buying and possible abuse(which is horrible, I agree). The parents who would buy living animals for whiny kids and then not take care of them, is the real problem there. I've bought, rescued or taken in many pets for my animal-loving kids...but we always buy books, learn all we can, and give them a great life with everything they need.

My sister usually dyes the white patches on her little dog BLUE on Halloween...and she is a vegetarian/animal lover. I can definitely see some colorful Silkies or Leghorns in my future. That green St Patrick's Day Silkie is just adorable...

I agree that it is not the dye that is cruel (if it is really safe, I don't completely believe it) It's is the fact that they only dye them to sell a ton of them at Easter. People will buy one for a child and then let it die or dump it once it too old and "ugly." Why do people treat any animal as if they are merchindise and disposible?

*Devil's Advocate Again* Yes but how many times has a parent bought a puppy or kitten for a kid to appease them? Only to have the the 3 year old drag them around by their tail? Dunk them in the toilet etc and etc.

Where I live most people let their dogs and cats run free and I wind up seeing them smooched on the side of the road because they arent properly secured.

Im going to lunch. You all behave till I get back
