I'm jumping in on this thread, but I'm small time...as in microscopic. I had an Australian Spotted duck that got mildly broody about 10 days ago. It's her first time and she's off the eggs more than she's on them. She only got serious a few days ago. I have no idea if the eggs are good or not, but I thought I'd give her the chance. As soon as she got serious about sitting, a broody-once-before hen started pushing the duck off the next and would sit on them herself.
Yesterday afternoon, it was comical. The hen was on the eggs and the duck was snuggled up right next to her.
I went to check on them this morning and the next was smoothed over and flat, the eggs were rolled around the coop (one was broken), and the duck and hen were no where near the nest.
What the heck happened?
I fixed up a nest bucket (I couldn't find a box) and put in some hay and the eggs, but neither has gone back to it.
I suspect the eggs are ruined, but I'm curious what may be going on here.
