Confounded by Sicilian buttercup chicks shunning their heat cave

Sheesh! These two are brutal! Scotty has been acting sick for two days, lost her appetite, all fluffed up and inert. It took me this long to diagnose the problem - coccidiosis.

So I scooped her off her perch this morning at 6am and brought her inside and treated her with Corid drench. In just two hours she was feeling much perkier and devoured a raw egg and started in on a cup of dry feed.

She had only been gone from the flock for four hours max, but when I returned her to the run, her sister Buttercup Shorty (new name) attacked her attempting to usurp Scotty's rank, which is pretty close to the bottom since Shorty was the only one interested in messing with her.

Well, Scotty was back and she was bad, not backing down one whit. The two are again friends and Shorty has been put back in her place and both are sharing the segregation pen so Scotty can eat without the flock sucking up all her food.

Shorty is a cute and funny name, but just curious, why did you change her name?

I was thinking of my chickens. They may try to debate me, mostly as to how often I should provide food and treats, but I always overrule them. Almost always. Shorty never warmed up to her names. We started with Saffron, then it went to Cockroach, then Shrimp, then finally Shorty. She's only a year old. She has years to get used to being Shorty.
