Connecticut Chicken Stock

Hi everyone, I'm new here

In regards to Dougs post: I never imagined there were so many chicken regulations! We were hoping to show some of our incubator hatched birds at the local (Ledyard) fair last fall, but then quickly realized that wasn't happening because they weren't vaccinated or tested etc... When we did go to the fair I did find out that if you call the dept. of agriculture, that they send out a vet tech who, just came in Feb and tested them all for Avian flu for free and for just $1.00 a bird vaccinated for pullorum. I was so worried, becuase we aren't zoned for chickens! She, Amy, who does the whole state of CT, couldn't care less, she was just there to do her job! So hopefully we will be able to show our chickens at the Ledyard fair next fall, now that we have the proper paper work......We still haven't received a bill for the pullorum test yet either. Well, just in case Doug gave you a scare:D it's not that big of a deal or cost to have them tested!

I showed my chickens at the ledyard fair last year, and one of my ducks. I mostly brought polish to that fair, so you probably saw them, and a pekin duck. Man it sure is a small world. You should try to get them vaccinated early, because they are very busy during fair season. Luckily we had a vet come right out to our place and do it. Maybe I'll see you at a few fairs this year, I've only been showing for 2 year(this will be my 3rd) but if you have questions please feel free to ask.

After reading further in your post I noticed the vet that came out to your place, it is the same lady who came out to my house, we aren't zoned either but she is really nice and didn't really care, plus we have no neighbors anyway. It was really entertaining trying to cath 30 sum chickens, plus this year we have another 39 on the way. Hope to see you at the fair!

Yes, I've been giving the neighbors eggs when possible, but it's been months and most of them are surprised that we even have chickens, maybe because we have mostly bantams they're not too loud. The only roosters I have are silkies(2).

P.P. We did check all the fowl at the fair, so I probably did see your birds/duck

Are your silkie roos pretty quiet? I'd love to keep one if one of our three hatched chicks is a male. (I know chances are that at least one of them is.) But I'm not sure the neighbors will tolerate a really loud roo. We had two polish who turned out to be roos and they crowed night and day and were LOUD! We found a new home for them.

Hi Kristin,

No, I don't think the silkie roos are too loud.... yet....I may feel differently though in the spring when we keep the windows open

What part of E CT are you in? When are your due to hatch?

We're in Windham. The hatch happened Thursday night into Friday. Good luck with the roos! I have a neighbor nextdoor who I really like. She does everything she can to keep her dog from barking. She doesn't like the rooster crowing down the street around the corner. She's always telling me how happy she is we don't have a rooster. Sigh.

Hi Kristen,
I have a silkie roo. He can be pretty vocal some days - and occasionally wakes me up in the AM(windows closed). This is my first roo so I have nothing to compare him to, but some days at 5AM he's way to @(#*&^$& loud.
