Connecticut!

Oops ! I wanted to say IT WAS GREAT, not I was great. New Chick 203 I loved your coop set up and your gardens. Also, thank you for showing my husband the way you heat your coop. He liked it.

Good morning-hope the rain stops soon for everyone! No fun waking up to thunderstorms today and a shivering dog trying to hide under the bed

So, this morning I check on the chicks (4 weeks old) in their brooder, and it looked like one had a little food on it's nostril. I cleaned it off, then noticed it still looked wet-and a few of the others have 'wet' nostrils although no built up discharge. Is this something I should be doing something about (and what??) or do chickens just get little colds and not to worry? They're all acting normally but I know birds can go downhill fast when something goes wrong....

Newchick - love the pic!

Tina - that post had me cracking up. Grounded for life - no worms for you!

No one ever warned me that guinea keets were soooo cute!!

Picked these little guys up this morning at the post office. They're so tiny, way tinier than the chicks.

The 4 ameracaunas that are in here with 5 of the guinea keets are only 2 days older than the keets (ameracaunas were born Monday; the keets on Wednesday) but they are abotu 2xs the size and weigh a lot more.

Lisa, it was nice to meet you the other day. Have you thought about just getting 4 Orp chicks from My Pet Chicken? they will ship just 4 to this area, and they have Buff. Just a thought. You mentioned getting just 2, but i really recommend 4. They will be much happier.

I have to get a coop built first. but i do plan on getting 4 chickens (Buff Orpingtons), I can not have roosters.

I have a question... the heat rope you use, where did you get it from?

...ive decided that my rhodeisland red and buff orp. are possiably still to young. but should be there soon(i hope) however my bar rocks are just around a year old i think..i noticed that thoes 2 have become the dominate ones with the slightly bigger 1 starting to act like a roo...i even heard her try and crow but it didnt come out it just seemed like her normasl noises which are quite just louder also shell go 2 my other rock and chase her or puff out their neck fethers at eachother but hardly ever pecck so im not too concerned ..but they both seem to have grown tiny bumps the beginins of spurs it seems...also ive noticed some smaller feathers in the coop but with no pecking im guessing they might maby be moulting but there arnt any bald spots and ive noticed that their tail feathers seem to be longer than norm and sort of go up then hang down....they were both baught from the auction as hens and im still new but from all the pics ive seen they dont look as much like a roo when compared to 1 but when im just looking at them compared 2 my pullets and wondering why im not getting any eggs it makes my mind go crazy.....now im 99% sure they r hens but is it common for hens 2 become dominate and act like a roo in the absence of a nice cock in the coop? and if so can this cause a stop in egg production??? im realy starting to think about starting over with 2 new barred rocks that are alreay laying good.

there is a very good chance that the birds you got at the the acution were hens that are real old an not laying anymore.when we went there last year 90% of all the bird were old hens or roos most just going to crockpot.hens will run the coop there is always one in charge.good luck with them

Hi, Older hens get small spurs too not, just roosters. Only roosters get the really big spurs but, older hens have small ones. If they are younger and roo's you will know soon trust me the Barred Rocks Crow loudly!!! Also, they could be molting. I have several different breeds molting now. Take Care
