What's this and can I take my chickie to the fair?

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/64662_bumblefoot.jpg

I was giving our Reserve Champion Wellie a bath for the fair and noticed she had a scab on the bottom of her foot. It was loose and fell of easily in my hands. What remains is a bit of a hole that is black - but it looks like dirt/sand in there. What is this? How can I best clean it out? Is she OK to go to the fair? Will she be DQ'd?

Tina that looks like a partial healed old puncture wound. I do not know if it would be a DQ or not. Check the web and in the meantime clean it gently not a scrubbing to avoid irritation and once clean pat dry and apply black drawing salve. Ask your pharmacy if they have any ithmal (sp) it will draw out debris and infection. You will have to keep that wound dry and clean. You'll be amazed at how quickly it will heal up

Hi, I would try to get your chicks sooner or postpone till spring. Babies need 6-8 wks in the brooder b4 going outside and if you do the math you will be putting them out in late November. They will have a tuff time building up resistant to outside bacteria and then to *dd cold temps it lessens survuval rate. IMO.

I have seen others do it but usually it is a long haul w/ chicks living in your house or basement and that's just not sanitary. As much as I love my poultry they are dirty critters

Best Wishes on your decision

HI! Tina,

Before I won the GFM my title was "Just Hatched"( 'Just Hatched' to 'Out of The Brooder: 50 posts) , but as a GFM you have the option of either keeping the title of "Golden Feather Member" or changing it to something more personnal, I changed my to " The Critter Whispererer".

I gave the 6 months memberships to New Chick 203 and Dobielady1

I don't see your own GFM and I can't figure out who you gave the other two to. Hints, please!

Thank for the offer John, my husband is obsessed with it, it is kinda like a challenge for him. His is having a great time.

Can I keep you in mind if he has any technical questions?

That is called bumblefoot. Many of my chickies have it, but mine have it too badly to do the surgery. Follow what she said!!!! Also, being chicken manager, I will allow bumblefoot into the fair, just not the mites!!!!!

I know about bumble foot but without a picture of the shaft of the leg it's hard to say if that is indeed B.F. no?

Sorry I accidentally hit the send button b/4 I finished....lol.... rough day at the office

But, anyway I steer away from tech terms such as that unless I see a full picture view of the foot

OK so I've seen the photos of bumblefoot - but what causes it and is this something I need to take steps to monitor and prevent? so far my 2 months old are doing well but I want to be on the lookout if I need to be!
