debbie is up to 8 eggs a day by next week we should be up to 12-14.by mid feb we should be up to 24 or so.

That's okay, mine are STILL in the brooder in the basement!!! We are still trying to finish the coop, but it's been too cold to work out there!

What do you do when you come across some one new to chickens who has a completely inadequate set up for safety or the amount of birds they have? It's happened a few times and I gently try to say something in a constructive way, but it's hard. I really want people to be honest with me. It seems if one person said it was fine that's what people want to believe.

We got 2 eggs today. Which is up from the 1 yesterday and the zero the day before that, so I guess things are looking up.

Of course I have a crazy lavender orpington that is in the midst of a full on molt. I keep telling her she read the calendar wrong. She looks a complete hot mess right now. Sorta like Pinhead from Hellraiser.

Jim, that's *my* kind of breeder! God bless her.
I also wonder if there may be a special something among the lavs, making them more sweet. My buff is quite sweet too.
I call out my lav and she comes running to me like a puppy, from wherever she is!

Jill, I've found no matter how right you are and how gently you explain things, People will go with the advice of one that makes it the way the really want it to work. Does that make sense?

I have people that come to me everytime a pred gets the flock. This woman asks me to come to her place and show her what did it and how they got in the coop. Everytime I tell her Weasel Weasel Weasel. Everytime I go there its from the night before and their are bodies everywhere with decapitation going on but, still intact, and no eggs missing.

Each time I explain to her that weasels are very flexible and can get into the smallest crevis! I point out possible places and tell her how to fix it. AND, everytime I go there none of it is fixed and usually the excuse is. Well......I always lock them in and I forgot last night it was a mistake. So since I Always lock them in I haven't fixed that stuff b/c if I lock them in whats the point???

Obviously she has an issue with making sure every night they are locked up b/c she has forgotten at least times in years and everytime cries to me how she needs more birds blah blah blah. I WILL NOT SELL HER ANYMORE and have explained this to her. I told her until she corrects her run and coop to what I find exceptable I will not sell her another one of my birds to just watch them die. We have not really talked much since the last time in August and from what I hear she is not buying birds from other people and still losing them.

Long story short, No matter how hard you try to educate and help they are just going to do what they want to and have no regard for the animal. Sad really if you think about how selfish that is

Ya, I met someone who was telling me about how many birds he has lost to predators at night. Well, after talking to him for a while it turns out he took an old dog house, put it up on stilts and wrapped it in chicken wire. (with 11 birds in it) It apparently didn't even have a door for a while. He kept finding the wire ripped off. I explained that chicken wire is a misnomer and it won't keep your chickens safe and what he wants is welded wire. He replied "It's fine, I talked to a farmer."
