Connecticut!

Fertilizing isn't the big problem. There are organic fertilizers out there that won't harm the birds. Kelp meal, for instance, is something that some people give to there birds free choice for the minerals. If my girls nibble on that while free ranging I'm not concerned. The seed is more of an issue, in that it will never have a chance to take off and grow of you let them at it. They will range it all away as seed snacks. What I have done is over seed smaller areas at a time and put up temporary fencing to keep them out. Once it's established move on to another area. I know, what a pain in the bum, but what else can you do.

I've often heard people say that their hen is likely to STOP being broody in direct proportion to how expensive the eggs are that they put under her. I have an amendment: They are also take into consideration how far you traveled to get those eggs. Apparently, a 3 hour round trip was the magic number.

Sorry to hear that....my broody is perfectly happy to sit on no eggs at all! So I haven't used organic fertilizer...the hubby is usually in charge of the lawn but has put me in charge of it since they are my chickens... what's the best stuff to use? I will be corraling themgirls while seeds grow :) they can get their own snacks!

I use Kelp meal and Plant tone usually. Grass uses more N than P or K so you might need to find something else depending on your soil. That where chicken poo is great. It's a great N source. I have one composter with just CP (Chicken Poo) and a little saw dust that is cooking down now and I will spread that on the lawn soon. The best place to start is a soil test. You might not need fertilizer at all, you might just need to adjust your Ph so the roots are able to take up the nutrients.

I've got the same predicament now. I've got to just get the fencing out to protect the areas I need to over seed.
