Hi Tinman,
I have pine shavings in a 10 gallon aquarium, with paper towels over the 3/4 of the tank where the food and water is and most of the pooping seems to happen. A couple of times a day I take out the food and water, gather up the paper towels with the mess on them, stir up the litter, put down new paper towels, and put the food back in (seems to be staying clean) with fresh water (which is anything but staying clean).
The tank we had actually had for geckos (lizards) which were a 'surprise' Christmas gift for my son, from his Aunt (who gives live animals to a kid without asking the parents first??). The lizards never did well, and just kind of wasted away despite me trying everything I could. Daily soaks and hand feedings didn't do it...anyway, I guess we weren't meant for lizards!
The tank is now recycled into a temporary brooder. There's a heating pad uner one corner of the tank, and a 100 watt heat lamp on that corner too on top of the mesh lid. That side of the tank is in the low 90's for now. Next week I'll have to see what temp turning off the heat pad makes, or start raising the light to drop the temp the requisite 5 degrees.
Chicks seem good for now-they keep picking a spot not directly under the light but nearby to make little chick pile for sleeping, with a straggler or two in a mini-pile somewhere else.
The dog has taken to guarding the tank-I don't know if Bailey is just jealous of the attention, or if she is being protective. If the cats are checking out the tank, the dog is definetely 'on alert' though so I think that bodes well.
OK, another long post, sorry about that!!

Sounds like you have everything under control. I used a red bulb on a dimmer switch so all you had to do is dim it slightly each week. It worked great. Congrats, by the way.

Thanks Tinman.
If the light we had from the reptils wasn't warm enough, I was going to get a red light -easier on the eyes-but since this seems to be working I can't justify the expense!
Now hubby's under the gun to build the coop... need to check around to see where I can get the cheapest materials. Want to check the Habitat for Humanity store, thought about stopping by the bethel dump to see if they can put aside any good wire maybe... we're getting there bit by bit!

CT Peeps, I'm looking for some local support from fellow Nutmeggers on my Facebook business page! I only need 13 more "LIKES" to get to 700 fans and I would LOVE for them to be from my BYC neighbors!

My business started right here on BackyardChickens.com nearly a year and a half ago and I'm trying to grow it online. I have a new web-store http://www.CustomEggCartonLabels.com and I'm happy that many of my existing BYC customers have found me over there!

If you are on Facebook and would like to join me, I would absolutely LOVE that! I have been doing lots of giveaways for free custom egg carton labels and you can get in on the freebies too!!

Thanks everyone!!

Itinerary modification:

Went to Benedicts for chook food.
Had lunch at Bills Drive In. Yummmmm!
Randomly decided to stop at Jones Farm Winery on the way home and had a LOVERLY wine tasting while the kids played in the playroom. Hubby got me three bottles of wine, some raw milk cheese and a new kids cookbook.

Did some work on the banty coop.

I love Jones. One of my favorite places in CT! Last year was the first time in 10+ years we didn't go for pumpkins - the trek from Canton now is soooo long. I really missed it though.

I won't sleep tonight!

So, do we have a baby yet?

We have our first little orp baby! I just saw her peaking through mom's feathers. I'll try to get a picture as soon as I get back from picking up the chick starter (obviously some part of me didn't believe it would happen) Maybe she will let me see the other eggs too.
