I have mine on pine shavings and have never had a probelm. I put them on them on day two after they hatch and come out of the brooder or out from under the hen.

I guess if they are hatchery stock then you have a 90% shot they are all pullets

Thanks, DH has already started to pull it apart to put in a pop door and a clean out door, and some sort of window. Not quite the quick fix I thought it would be, but nothing ever is. I'm starting to get nervous about the hatch. Can you believe it's been 3 weeks since you gave me those eggs? time flies when you have poison ivy, and one chicken with bumble foot, and a yard full of weeds and ....

I noticed a tiny crack in one of the eggs this afternoon. I wasn't sure if that was an accident or the start of a pip. Will it be obvious when it all starts?

Hi, I'm not sure why but, lately BYC is not sending me notifications of new posts or PM's!!! I can't believe it's been that long!!! Yes it will be a tiny pip where the beak breaks through the membrane and shell. It can take up to 24 hours

You should put the shaving on top of the paper towels or news paper. When it get dirty just sprinkle more shaving on top. When it come time to clean it out just roll it all up the news paper. What are you using for a heat source? If the chickies are staying on the other side of the heat source then they are to hot, if they stay close they may be cold.It is a good idea to get a small thermometer and keep it at chick level. It should be about 90.Lower the temp 5 degrees each week.
