A friend asked me to hatch some PQ quality for her, so I stuck those in the incubator. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I have a buff boy in there with several odd colored girls, so it should be interesting.

NooOooooo! Another egg-bound hen (a Welsummer). I've been so busy lately that I just didn't put together the clues.. the comb being not as bright (which is the reason I took the other Wellie to the fair this weeken instead of her). I saw that she was not sitting the roost a couple of nights ago when I went to check on them late but didn't think a whole lot of it since one of my banties prefers to not sit on the roost. Walking slowly and not rushing to get out of the run. UGH! I should have put it all together. Today I see egg crud on her backside and she has her tail feathers down.

I'm going to give her a warm bath just as soon as I shove the kiddos off to school. Help! I would guess it has been about a week and since I first noticed thing and should have started paying attention. Praying it isn't too late for my pretty girl.

UPDATE: Soaked her for 20+ min and saw some yellow yolk in the water. She didn't want to stay in the tub any longer. I looked all over the coop and run and see no runny poos. I'm pretty meticulous about looking my girls over for mites and see no evidence. Gonna give my sick girl some Baytril and see if she perks up.

Good morning CT peeps!

I am so tired, two festivals and a 6 hour birthday party wore me out.

So glad I don't have to work today!!!

The Orange Country Fair was very very nice, I saw your birds Tina - pretty! Good luck with your hen today.

Out of all the fairs I've been to that have chickens on display, I have to say the Orange Country Fair did it right.
There was a wonderful short picket fence border placed two or three feet out from the cages so people couldn't walk too close and poke fingers in, very nice idea and looked cute too.

The Pumpkin Festival in Seymour was really great too! I would definitely go to that again, what a great park.

Here is a recent photo of my 2 pullets, just because I luv 'em and wanted to share.

Hi Tina,

So she has the nasty stuff coming out as if she was egg bound and has passed it? Or she is still egg bound with that stuff coming out. Sorry I just need you to clarify I guess I'm not getting it by your post

I don't know.... It's rather confusing.. very much like when we lost Tilly. I def saw some yellow stuff come out in the water like egg drop soup (maybe 1/2 a tsp worth). I don't feel anything when I palpate (carefully, of course) her abdomen. I see no shell bits (in the water, cage or coop). I'm not too squeamish to do a cavity search, but just wasn't sure if that was in order or the best way to go about doing that with a chook.

No nasal discharge or signs of respiratory distress. I have a stethoscope and could listen to her lungs, I suppose. She ate some yogurt and grapes I gave her just fine, but turned her nose up at pellets. She walks slowly but doesn't stand off to the side, she hangs around with the others (I have her in a cage now, though). Tail feathers are down but not wing feathers.

I was thinking maybe worms but the poo looks normal. I frequently dust the girls with DE and they get ACV in their water.

All this is just how it was with Tilly.. who progressively got worse and then passed away a month later.

Priscilla had a mild bumblefoot a month and a half ago, but it healed up completely in early August.

The last show she went to was August 5/6.

Tina: Sorry to hear about your Wellie. Will be praying!

Hi CT! We are in Southington. Our eggs- barred rocks- were put in incubator on Sept 1 so we are coming up on our hatch- HOPEFULLY! Everything was good on 8 of 12 eggs last time we candled. I am obsessing over the eggs- temp, humidity. I am so scared that something is going to happen. We did a homemade incubator. We turned them 3 times a day and temp was pretty consistent 99/100 on the readings and 45-50 on humidity. Now we are at 70% for the last 3 days. I think I am driving myself nuts reading too much about all the things that can go wrong- I feel better to be overprepared! Anyway- we are curious where to get feed? agway only has tiny bags, we got our chick starter there. Also, we want to get a few rhode island reds- females, to go with our barred rocks and are wondering if anyone knows anyone in CT or close by that might have them? I am a little nervous about adding new chickens in and it was suggested to get chicks at same time as our hatch. We need to see how many of our eggs hatch and how many m or f we get. I have a home offer for the boys in Manchester- if anyone is closer and interested let me know- we can't keep them. Our brooder is ready to go and the coop is under contruction. Any tips or suggestions are VERY welcome!
