Hey, a farmerchick's gotta do what needs to be done, right? Huh? It was before I had incubators...

Revolutionmama nursed a duck back to health in her jacuzzi for 6 months...what else would a farmergirl do?

Intro...

Hello All,

My name is Mike. I am in the Lawrence/Linwood/Eudora/Tonganoxie/Desoto KS area. My wife and I bought some small acreage here to raise our kids and a little H-E-Double hockey sticks. Friends with OzawkieBantams and brother-in-law to 1idwillie on this forum.

The land we have came with several chicken houses. I had no use for most of them so I donated them to the aforementioned folks here, but I kept a large hen house for myself. I am in the process of renovating it for my 28 meaties with a possible future addition of meaties and laying hens. It is 200 ft^2 with a run of approximately 2500 ft^2 (quite large). We are also bringing up a few head of cattle and a gigantic garden.

I am new to the country life being a city slicker, so you may see some pretty bad posts from me showing my obvious ignorance.

This is an excellent resource to me so far, so I appreciate all of the help I've received so far and the help I know I will get in the future.

I am going to post pictures as soon as I am allowed and will appreciate any feedback and criticism you all can drum up to help us along.

Again, hello everyone and keep up the good work of tutoring all of the noobs like me.

Mike

Hi! We're low on Mikes on this thread, so it's good to have a 3rd or 4th!

You're going to kick your own butt when the chicken addiction hits you and you realize you need to build more coops. Good luck with that!!

Chicken math will get you every time!

Glad to have you here.

I'm already jonesing for more birds and am even thinking about Thanksgiving turkeys. I think I will be okay in the real estate dept though. I still have the building I am renovating plus two more quite large chicken houses. I think the guy who lived here before us had fighting roosters.

My hen house already has an eight-room nesting box (built by me) and will soon have an industrial machinery computer (PLC) operating the heating, ventilation, lighting, guillotine door, and nuisance deterrent system. I am also going to build a Whizbang-style plucker and a temperature-controlled scalder. This will be pretty easy for me as I am a controls engineer by trade and have a lot of old equipment from obsoleted products my company produces.

I was thinking of using mason sand for bedding, but after further research, I may go with the deep litter method instead. I call it the deep $#!+ method because that is what I'm in every time my wife finds out about my newest endeavor. I would appreciate any input on the method I should use from seasoned readers.

Anyway, off to bed. Thank you all again.

Mike

bnjmik, you and I are going to have some extremely geeky MacGyver talks, I can see that already. I'll turn your wife into a chicken chick, too!

Who's in charge of setting up the coffee chick'n chats around here, anyway!? Was that me?

Okay, Amy's Coffee House in Lawrence, Mass St. Weds?

Toss out your times when you're able to come and let's find a time that works, folks!
