Ugh does anyone know if Bumble foot is more common for silkie chickens because a old hen of mine keeps getting it then it goes away for about a year then it comes back

I don't believe it is more common in one breed over another. Also, I've never heard of it going away without treatment. It is a staph infection that continues to get worse and worse until the bird dies of the infection, unless the whole infection (bumble) is cut out surgically. Perhaps your hen has some other ailment that is coming and going?

Thank you Cherwil, Sherol & HEchicken.great info loved the part about putting them in after they had gone to roost. Funny how dopey they get I was just out there putting some nustock on a couple of thier backs (bad roo!).
Yeah I kind of figured they weren't "real Ameracaunas" I thought it would be neat to add some color to the egg basket. I wouldn't mind adding a couple Welsumers too.

She's still alive, but still about the same. She is eating and scratching, but clearly not well. Thanks for asking. I picked her up last night to check her, and she didn't struggle. Not a good sign for this particular hen.
Oh, Sherol I ment to ask . How's your egg bound chicken? She sure was pretty

My theory is that bumblefoot is more common among all chickens than we think. I check feet at least once a quarter, and I seem to always find one or two with spots. I have to do surgery on two more sometime this weekend. The spots are small, but clearly there. However, I have two hens who had it 2 years ago, and it appears to be completely gone (did the surgery on both). We are still wrestling with residual problems with my roo's feet, and even the vet isn't sure it is from bumblefoot. We did the surgery on him late last fall, and his feet are swollen -- just no bumble evidence.

There was a story posted over in illnesses about a woman who ordered chicken feet for soup, and when they came, they were all infected with bumblefoot and no one at the source thought anything about it. Not sure how that worked out.

Ewwww. That is really gross. I processed a rooster last year who had a bumble in both feet and I didn't even want to use them for making chicken stock like I normally do, because they idea of boiling up that staph infection and then ingesting it just did NOT appeal to me.

Good morning everyone , Newbie here . Mind if I join? We actually got our chicks last year from Orschielns (sp?) everything has gone pretty well coop is done , run is functional, love the eggs and really enjoy spoiling the girls,Then last weekend we were at Orsh. again and picked up 4 more. (2 sil.laced Wy. and 2Americanas) I'm sure there are a zillion posts on BYC that could answer any questions I have but thought how nice it would be to ask some folks who are actually in a similar environment( weather,soil,predators,ect..) So my first ?. How would any off you add these new four to the rest of the flock? right now they are in the garage in a big stock tank with a heat lamp and everything else. I know it will be a while yet ,and I don't want them to get picked on 3 months, 5 months? There are some picks on my profile page I'll have to wait till tech suport gets home from school to show me how to post here I have ADD brain when it comes to this kind of stuff. CIAO.

Welcome!

Just jump right in. Questions are always welcome. I don't have a lot of experience with merging the 2 flocks but I did it last December after the chicks I hatched were about 5 to 6 weeks old. I sectioned off an area in the main coop and put the 6 chicks in there. I left them in there for at least a week and I opened a small door for them to go in and out of but the the bigger chickens can't get in. So the little ones have a chance to run into their "home" if they were being picked on. I let this go for a week or 2. The big chickens never bothered them. Some did come up to the sectioned off area (I used chicken wire so everyone can see everyone) to check them out but never picked on them. After the initial week or 2 of introduction, I just take the small door off completely and they have been together since. Didn't have any issue. My chickens free range during the day so I assume the big chickens were too busy to forage for bugs and what not and with several acres to roam, the small chicks were not a threat to them. HTH.

Kuan my experience is if it is a coyote you will probably just lose a hen a day The neighbors dog or a fox love to kill and will kill all they can get. A fox dosent kill just to eat but lives to kill .. Yes they will all come in broad daylight moreso now as they have young

It was indeed, a fox. I'll post more after this about what Charlito saw.

I was out petting my chickens today and it was nice just to have them around

Having some chicken therapy is always good for the soul.

Sharol, so sorry your hen is not well and egg bound. We, humans, are so helpless at times... knowing that the hen is suffering but yet, we can't fix her.

Chewill - Multi quotes are acting up and your post didn't show up, along with a few others. We will need to figure out what to do to prevent future attacks. I haven't found a solution yet since they free range during the day.

Well... DH talked to Charlito. Apparently he said there was an "orange looking cat" with her youngs came and killed my chickens. When I heard that, I knew he was talking about the red fox (it was confirmed later by the neighbor). I have seen the red fox around our area but never saw them coming close to our property. But they did yesterday, probably looking for food because there were several according to Charlito. The neighbor just so happened to be tending to her horses so when she heard the sqwaking from my chickens and saw the red fox, she sent her 2 dogs over. So the gesture from Charlito was also correct that there was dogs but they were not the predator. By the time the dogs were over to our property, the damage had already been done. I am pretty sure that it was the combination of the dogs and coincidence of Charlito going back to our property to pick up the blue bird seeder for work that saved the rest of my flock. I was very grateful that my neighbor saw it happened and sent her dogs over. Now I need to find a way to contain the chicken and keep them away from the predators. I just don't know how at this point because of how big the area is.

On a not so good note. The hen didn't make it. I think it was due to the blood lost and the shock was just too much for her body. I found another hen huddled under the cedar tree. She is hurt, just not as bad. She is now living in the hospital ward along with the rooster. The rooster is doing well so far. His eye is swollen shut. Part of his beautiful comb is now gone along with quite a bit of his feathers. He was still eating OK and drinking some. I did get the eye gel so hopefully he will be OK. I really can't tell if he lost his eye or not at this point. It is very swollen and red. So I lost the hen and 3 others (DH found clumps of feather at the back of the barn and some blood so that could be from the missing chickens). A total of 4. DH said the rest of the chickens will have to be confined in their coop till this weekend when we can come up with a solution to make sure the predators can't get to them. I don't think we have to worry about them wanting out because they didn't even attempt to step foot outside at all. They are still scared.

Another sad note is I lost a baby chick. Not sure what happened but yesterday, I found the chick very lethargic. It is the smallest and didn't want to eat or drink. I tried to carry it in my bra to warm it up and use a syringe to feed it some water. I put it back under the heater after I turn off the light to the brooder but by this morning, it was gone. The rest of the chicks are looking good.

They will be moved to the big brooder once I can get the 6-week old chicks out to their new coop.

Now I'm hoping for a better day and weekend. The rain outside is very much welcome and not freezing cold! How's that for a change.

Have a good one.

Good Morning all. A warm welcome to all the newcomers

Yesterday was a beautiful day so i had all the chicks outside enjoying the weather. Hubby bought the materials we need to get working on the run for the coop so hope this weekend we can get started.

On a sad note my DH had an follow appt with oncologist to go over MRI results from Monday they found activity in the brain again so they are going to either start chemo or try radiation. I'm not sure what to think it's like my brain has stopped working and just doesn't want to let anything in I'm walking around like a zombie today. Plus today is my oldest son turns 11 so we are trying to keep our spirits up so he doesn't know things are going on.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day

Oh no - I'm so sorry. I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering how things are going with your DH. I'm really sad to hear that the news isn't as positive as you would like and I can only imagine the fog in which you find yourself walking around, and how difficult it is to keep your true feelings from your kids so they don't worry as well.
