Consolidated Kansas

I tried to find the original post, but it was probably a year or two ago before the reorganization, and I am clearly not using the right search terms. I was pretty put off by it, too. The whole idea of using infected tissue for food is just disgusting.

The poster's point was that WE are more concerned about bumblefoot than the big producers of chickens.
Ewwww. That is really gross. I processed a rooster last year who had a bumble in both feet and I didn't even want to use them for making chicken stock like I normally do, because they idea of boiling up that staph infection and then ingesting it just did NOT appeal to me.

My thoughts will be with you both. My DH is 5 years out of colon cancer surgery and chemo. I hold my breath every time he has tests.

On a sad note my DH had an follow appt with oncologist to go over MRI results from Monday they found activity in the brain again so they are going to either start chemo or try radiation. I'm not sure what to think it's like my brain has stopped working and just doesn't want to let anything in I'm walking around like a zombie today. Plus today is my oldest son turns 11 so we are trying to keep our spirits up so he doesn't know things are going on.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day

Good Morning all. A warm welcome to all the newcomers

Yesterday was a beautiful day so i had all the chicks outside enjoying the weather. Hubby bought the materials we need to get working on the run for the coop so hope this weekend we can get started.

I am sorry to hear this. DW and I do not like the C word around our house. I will you all in my thoughts.

Bleah! I don't blame you; I wouldn't think it would be worth the risk. If you get a staph infection and don't get every trace cleared out, you end up on antibiotics for life like my mother.

Yes it is.

Well... DH talked to Charlito. Apparently he said there was an "orange looking cat" with her youngs came and killed my chickens. When I heard that, I knew he was talking about the red fox (it was confirmed later by the neighbor). I have seen the red fox around our area but never saw them coming close to our property. But they did yesterday, probably looking for food because there were several according to Charlito. The neighbor just so happened to be tending to her horses so when she heard the sqwaking from my chickens and saw the red fox, she sent her 2 dogs over. So the gesture from Charlito was also correct that there was dogs but they were not the predator. By the time the dogs were over to our property, the damage had already been done. I am pretty sure that it was the combination of the dogs and coincidence of Charlito going back to our property to pick up the blue bird seeder for work that saved the rest of my flock. I was very grateful that my neighbor saw it happened and sent her dogs over. Now I need to find a way to contain the chicken and keep them away from the predators. I just don't know how at this point because of how big the area is.

On a not so good note. The hen didn't make it. I think it was due to the blood lost and the shock was just too much for her body. I found another hen huddled under the cedar tree. She is hurt, just not as bad. She is now living in the hospital ward along with the rooster. The rooster is doing well so far. His eye is swollen shut. Part of his beautiful comb is now gone along with quite a bit of his feathers. He was still eating OK and drinking some. I did get the eye gel so hopefully he will be OK. I really can't tell if he lost his eye or not at this point. It is very swollen and red. So I lost the hen and 3 others (DH found clumps of feather at the back of the barn and some blood so that could be from the missing chickens). A total of 4. DH said the rest of the chickens will have to be confined in their coop till this weekend when we can come up with a solution to make sure the predators can't get to them. I don't think we have to worry about them wanting out because they didn't even attempt to step foot outside at all. They are still scared.

Another sad note is I lost a baby chick. Not sure what happened but yesterday, I found the chick very lethargic. It is the smallest and didn't want to eat or drink. I tried to carry it in my bra to warm it up and use a syringe to feed it some water. I put it back under the heater after I turn off the light to the brooder but by this morning, it was gone. The rest of the chicks are looking good.

They will be moved to the big brooder once I can get the 6-week old chicks out to their new coop.

I'm sorry the damage continues. I don't know how to keep foxes out if they're determined. Luckily, we just don't have them in our neighborhood. I think they're like ferrets -- they can get through the tiniest spot, like they don't have bones or something.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the chemo or radiation will do its thing quickly.

Hope your son has a happy birthday!

My thoughts will be with you both. My DH is 5 years out of colon cancer surgery and chemo. I hold my breath every time he has tests.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for continuing good news for your DH, too. Even when they declare someone "cancer free," I'm sure everyone still gets nervous until the results come in.

Now that I don't see below freezing temperatures in the forecast, I'm anxious to get back out in the garden. Of course, we're getting just enough rain to make that impossible, but not enough to have our county declared not "dry." It's thundering right now, so I need to get my computer unplugged soon. I want there to be enough rain to make a difference, but I also want to get outside!

Sick bird update: The other hen that was sick looks to be better. However, it seems she is pulling feathers out and I don't know why. I am thinking of putting her back in with the flock as she has been isolated for two weeks and looks better. Is she just going mental on me?

On eating chicken feet - I remember my mom cooking some when I was a kid. I don't remember what they were like to eat though. As to the lady buying some and getting diseased ones, that is just wrong on so many levels and then for her to "defend" the source?

But if anyone is interested in a breed of chickens that would give you huge chicken feet - check these out. Only $2,000 a bird.

Welcome!

Just jump right in. Questions are always welcome. I don't have a lot of experience with merging the 2 flocks but I did it last December after the chicks I hatched were about 5 to 6 weeks old. I sectioned off an area in the main coop and put the 6 chicks in there. I left them in there for at least a week and I opened a small door for them to go in and out of but the the bigger chickens can't get in. So the little ones have a chance to run into their "home" if they were being picked on. I let this go for a week or 2. The big chickens never bothered them. Some did come up to the sectioned off area (I used chicken wire so everyone can see everyone) to check them out but never picked on them. After the initial week or 2 of introduction, I just take the small door off completely and they have been together since. Didn't have any issue. My chickens free range during the day so I assume the big chickens were too busy to forage for bugs and what not and with several acres to roam, the small chicks were not a threat to them. HTH.

It was indeed, a fox. I'll post more after this about what Charlito saw.

Sharol, so sorry your hen is not well and egg bound. We, humans, are so helpless at times... knowing that the hen is suffering but yet, we can't fix her.

Chewill - Multi quotes are acting up and your post didn't show up, along with a few others. We will need to figure out what to do to prevent future attacks. I haven't found a solution yet since they free range during the day.

Have a good one.

I'm sorry for your losses, I hope the fox moves on & doesn't come back but if it has young it may see your chickens as easy food. I'm sorry to be a downer like that. I hope the rest of your little chicks are doing OK.

I'm so sorry for your news, that has to be hard trying to stay positive for the kids.

It's raining here today, it's actually rained quite a bit already because I had to empty the tarp on the top of my main coop run since it was full. I got rained on again when I went out to let my chickens & the little goats out. I'm glad for the moisture on one hand, but hate the mud & mess on the other. I'm just glad it's rain & not snow though, that's an improvement.

I'm sorry to hear that your DH has to undergo chemo or radiation. I'll keep you and family in my thoughts.

I love to eat chicken feet. I know it is gross to some but I grew up eating them so they are "normal" part of life to me. I know of several ways to cook them too. Looking at those pictures, there is no way I'll eat them. They scared me. I don't know how they did it and they are just not normal to me. Sorry....
