Consolidated Kansas

Michelleml, I was just thinking about you a couple days ago. I am glad to hear that your husband is still hanging in there. Yes I understand what you mean about retirement and disability. It is never as much as one should get for what they give.
To me I would be afraid that your hens had Mereks disease from the description. You need to separate those two from the rest of the flock. There is no cure for it as far as I know. I'm very sorry.
I don't know why I overestimate what I can do in a day. I have run all day and could work all night and still not have the things done I need to. It's 10PM and I am just ready to eat dinner.
I had to shed some tears his evening. I have had an English splash Orpington in the house since the end of July. She got stuck in the mud when we had a big storm and was sneezing. She was near dead when I pulled her out of the mud. We have had her in the house with another English who was a little stunted and she has been treated with everything imaginable. I finally just started giving her and her friend probiotics and lots of veggie treats.
I walked in to give them some cooked chicken scraps and found her dead. I had gotten so very attached to that little pullet. Her cage mate is lonely. They stayed with their cage and roosted on top of it. I came in here and looked up and here came the other chicken. She is now sitting on my lap talking.
I feel guilty as well. I have been taking them out to a bigger cage and letting them play outside in the grass for days now. Today I never got around to it. So her last day wasn't a great one.

Good evening everyone it's been a very long time sense I've been on. We are all doing okay my hubby is still hanging on still doing chemo. He was medically retired from military end of June. I went back to work part time to help ends meet but still struggling we are doing our best.
It's very frustrating that after serving 18yrs in army and going to Iraq three times retirement pay would be a little more but i guess that's how it goes. I'll keep working part-time till i find full time work and hope things get better.

I'm glad your DH is hanging in there with the chemo; being retired will probably allow him to focus more on recovery and maybe let him have a little more energy. It seems like a lot of the jobs with the most danger, like military, fire dept, and police, don't pay all that much. I guess money isn't the reason people choose those careers; it's sure not why my DH chose it! I'm thankful for how many people feel a calling or desire to do those jobs, despite the average pay.

Aw, I'm sorry about the pullet. Don't feel guilty, you gave her plenty of extra, good days. Since she died, she likely wasn't in good enough shape today to worry about whether or not she was outside.

I got home yesterday and my crested chickens eye is all swollen is there amy ideas what i should do her feathers are also all rumpled and weird looking she has ben the queen bee so to speak and i have two growing ee roos

cleansquared, an eye problem can be just an injury to the eye or it can be a symptom of a respiratory infection. The rumpled feathers would seem to indicate in this case it is more likely the latter, so antibiotics may be your best treatment of choice. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a guessing game to figure out which antibiotic without knowing which infection is causing the symptoms. I've had good luck with Denagard for those symptoms, and on the other hand, tried it once and it did nothing. You will find a couple of broad spectrum antibiotics available at your local feed store - Duramycin 10 is one that is good to have on hand. You can also get Tylan 50 there, and I like to keep both on hand for when I need them (and then hope that I don't). Denagard needs to be ordered online.

For the eye itself, you can't go wrong using Vetericyn Opthalmic Gel. That will help to clear up congestion around the eye itself, but if it is an infection causing the symptoms, it will return soon.

Cleansquared, this swollen eye thing has been going around all over the state. I know several people who have experienced it although I am not sure if it is all the same thing. I've had lots of people write me about it. Whatever it is I believe must either carried by mosquitoes or migratory birds.
I have the very best luck with Tylan for anything respiratory or sinus related- which I would guess this to be. You would have to inject it in the breast muscle unless you ordered the powder which costs like $50 for a tiny bottle.
Watch her carefully because this stuff can kill very quickly if her breathing becomes labored, I would put some VETRX on her nostrils as well, and if you don't have any, some camphor oil or even some vicks vapor rub would help. Do not block her nostrils with it though. Also would be a good time to give her plenty of fresh greens, access to grass, and some yogurt or other probiotics.
If you don't feel comfortable giving an injection of Tylan you can give it orally in the same dose amounts by squirting the contents of the syringe down her throat. It does however make their throat a little sore so it could make it harder for her to eat.
I've got to get ready and make a trip to Lawrence. Five or so hours on the road yesterday and now that is another 2 hours or so this AM. I'm buying a pirit hose at about half price. I have always wanted one but avoided the cost. I sure hope it works as described cause it could save me a lot of work this winter. I normally have to blow all my hoses out with air each time I used them to keep them from freezing.

Here is the tag off the bag of chick starter that I am using for the chicks, guineas and peafowl. I start offering it as FF at about 2 weeks and always have dry free choice available.
400

The older guineas love the Ff also but just pick the grains out of the scratch/flock builder that they get free choice so I just put the powder back into the FF mix. Hmm, Ok?
Well, everyone have a wonderful and drama free day.
