I like that grape vine idea, too. I planted some grapes this year, but I didn't plant them for the chickens. I may have to plant some more next year WHEN or IF I get my new breeder barn done!

I had one hen yesterday that I was really worried about. I was cleaning out the coop and making some modifications in there. She was not happy with me at all. She wanted to lay an egg in the corner on the floor where I had scooped out all the clippings. She kept trying to round up clippings to make a nest there. My son was helping me, and she was bumping into our legs as we worked on re-attaching the roost (I put hinges on the top so the whole thing would swing up and hook to the ceiling while I clean under it.... works great!) Since we were working on the roost it was a while before I got shavings laid back down in there. She fussed and fussed around till she was panting and making a terrible noise with her lungs. I know she was overheating. It was SO HOT in there! We were'nt having any fun, either, working in there with no breeze. She finally gave up and went out in the shade.

So today everyone seems to be doing okay even with the heat. Hubby, son and I have been picking up bales of hay. No fun with 118 degree heat index.

i know that it is bad here! i am moving things around in the coop today to make sure there is a nice cool breeze for them in the nest box - there is only one laying right now - i hate rationing out my eggs - but i have 14 girls who should start laying when it cools down- yeah!

dont forget to keep YOURSELVES cool Kansas folks! the girls are important - but they need you to be healthy too! drink lots and lots of liquid and be safe today!

Well hope you know where your water comes from. Unless your one of those evil bottled water drinkers. Then your helping in the disappearance of our great lakes....... Good job you bottle water drankers...... Make us proud!

I think it was 1978, 79 or 80. My husband and I went to Lake Afton near Wichita. We washed our hands in the lake before we had some sandwiches and a picnic. We both got Salmonella. He got over it in about 48 hours. It took me longer. That was about as sick as I have ever been. I thought I was going to die. My husbands sister was dying of multiple organ failure in KC, and we ended up making a whirlwind trip to KC, with me vomiting in a plastic bag the whole way. It was not fun. We won't talk about the other end of the deal.

They ended up closing the lake for the rest of the summer. There were several hundred people that summer that ended up with salmonella from the lake. I don't ever want to experience that again.

Well I really hope we don't get sick, guess we should of read the little tiny sign at the boat dock before getting in the water of coarse it didn't say don't swim-it just said we advise against it- lol no real warning til later on the news. Well several hundred people will be sick since there were plenty of people swimming, tubing and riding jet skies. Advisory also said to make sure you clean your fish you catch and dispose of the guts???

I drink bottled water I make myself!

I know where our water comes from- mine comes from the river- which is also gross, but it's processed well beforehand and I use filters here, too. I won't be swimming in the lakes until the next big flood. The water levels being high helps keep the bacterial levels and temps low...so it's going to be a while.

I would also love to see your home bottled water system. Are you collecting rain water?

The year that I got sick at Lake Afton I believe was the year they had over 10 days in a row with temps over 110. Must have been 1980. That was a long time ago. Wichita certainly can be the hottest town in the midwest!

High temps that we have had lately can raise all sorts of problems, just like they do with the water in livestock waterers. Being cautious is not a bad thing. I certainly hope no one gets sick.

Personally, I'm not a hypochondriac.

As far as getting out and living, I do my share. Your statement feels like a personal attack. I was simply relating an experience I had. I've swam in many lakes since then, run my share of trot lines in muddy Kansas rivers, and done more living than a lot of people can even dream of. I am very much an outdoor person.

Please don't turn this into some kind of personal attack on others. It's simply a Kansas forum for people with chickens.
