Hi, fellow Kansans! I just joined BYC yesterday - what a great site! I'm learning a lot. Returning to the chicken world after a long absence. I wanted to weigh in on this DE business and ask a question. I had read somewhere that chickens should only have food grade DE. What does that mean? What makes it food grade and what happens if it isn't? I read other posts about finding it at auto parts stores and searched the O'Reilly Auto Parts store and found three different brands of 100% DE for $7.49, $7.99, and $9.99. All were 25 pound bags. Sounds like a deal to me. I'd like to get some and make a dust bath for my birds but I'm worried about this "food grade" business. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

I personally wouldn't chance it to save a bit- they have food grade at most TSCs and you can ask them to order it if you can't find it. Also, we have it at the feed mill in Perry and at the Farm & Feed in Lawrence, if you're near.

Welcome back!!

That sounds like a good mix, but you won't need that much DE. I wouldn't chance it because there are lots of industrial formulations of DE that are processed with chemicals and solvents that are the LAST thing I want near my birds, and consequently in my eggs. It's just not worth it when you can get a good price at a feed store. I only use one pound per 100 pounds of feed, and maybe a pound a month in the coop and dust area. It's NOT heavy, so a little goes a long way.

HELP! I came home from teaching at a church youth camp to find a notice taped to my front door. I have until 4:37 tomorrow afternoon to get my 6 roosters off the property and outside the city limits. The interesting thing is that only one of my chickens is obviously a rooster, and 2 others are just starting to attempt crowing. The other 6 birds are hens. Apparently, someone complained, and really only reported one rooster and several "unknown" birds. I think I can probably take the bantam roo back to the stable where I got him, but that still leaves me with a 7-week-old BC Marans (with VERY feathery legs and feet) and a 15-week-old Blue Andalusian. Anyone near Wichita, but outside the city limits, need a couple of beautiful roosters?

I don't know of anyone. Maybe the stable will take them for you. It wouldn't hurt to ask them. At least they won't be dinner for someone. You could also put them on craigslist and see if you get any takers.
