Consolidated Kansas

I think its a good idea to store them with the big end up and then turn them a couple of times a day, even before you start incubating. I usually hear to store them around 60. So perhaps the coolest room in your house, in a carton with the big end up and turn them morning and night until you're ready to start incubating? (Note: this info is gleaned from research - not personal experience since I have never been able to incubator my own eggs to this point).

Big end up! Okay--- didn't know that!! If anyone else wants to jump in here and help me-- PLEASE inform me! ha!

Did anybody have answers to my questions about administering the Ivomec, I'm going to get it late tomarrow morning a hope to go strait out and give it to them. I really need to know what I'm doing here.

rittert, it looks like the ones that would know the answer to your questions aren't on here tonight. You may have to do a search on BYC about the Ivomec & surely there is a lot of info to be found because I know quite a few use it. I have not used that as of yet, so I can't be of any help on that score. I would like to know the answers to that also though because I may need to know at some point myself.

Danz, those are some adorable little fuzzy faces, so cute! They have so much expression after they get their eyes open. Yeah I agree with you about the pups & the cats, I just don't think they did it. DH went right to putting the blame on them, but honestly I felt like the cats had already been dead when they found them. He was so upset about those darned cats, but we have too many as it is. Don't get me wrong, I like the cats too, but we aren't going to miss a couple & I hate to say it but they weren't my favorite ones. I do hate to think they died from being poisoned & I wish I could do something to dissuade my neighbor from putting the stuff out there, but she knows I have cats & she hates them. I have told her why we have them & she still does things like that. I didn't know about the poison until just a few days ago when I was over there talking to them about the pups. They have chickens & dogs, so you wouldn't think they would be putting poison out, but they do.

HE, there is one other Wichita gal that is only on here once in awhile, but I haven't seen her lately. She mostly is just a lurker I think rather than posting much.

Our Kansas Poultry Swap keeps growing every day, I have been surprised at how many members we have gotten in only a few days. I think it's very exciting!

Ritter, I'm with Trish--- I have no idea how to administer the Ivermectin! I'd plug that into the search here on BYC and see what you come up with and what other people do.

Trish, sorry about the cats, but I can't imagine your pups going after cats all of a sudden. Doesn't seem very likely. But if the cats were dead and starting to smell... then yeah, they're going to drag them home and roll in them and eat them! Now THAT sounds like a dog. ;)

I always put it on my chickens necks. I just put the bird under my arm like a football and part the feathers and put my syringe on the skin and squirt. I find that easier than trying to hold the bird, hold the wing out and squirt the stuff. I don't know anything about subq. I have never injected ours with anything.

If you can only get the injectable ivermectin (ivomec, iver-on,etc.), that's fine, because you can give it to them orally- just a few drops. Sorry I'm so brief lately- I'm on my phone and still waiting on a part for my computer.

rittert - here is one post of Chooks where she tells how to use the ivermectin. I tried to search for others but I couldn't get the search to respond. Maybe you would have better luck.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure the vet will sell me a syringe or two cheap, if not I think I've got a few around from the kids' different meds. I'm pondering how they are going to send it home with me (being only a partial bottle)

. I'll try to hop on tomarrow afternoon after I give it to them and let you all know how it goes. Then tuesday I'm going to try to go get the parts for my incubator from marysville so it's ready when the quail eggs get her about the 18th of next month. BTW does anybody use that little eletronic Hydrometer/thremometer that gqf makes? I had her order me one up because I needed to replace the vent plugs and thermostat in my 'bator anyway, and I wanted a quick easy way to read my humidity and temp.

Hawkeye, I have only one white serama pair and she has been putting out an eggabout every other day. I put them in an egg carton in the garage which is about 40-50 degrees. I got about eight over a 15 day period and put them in an incubator four days ago and all eight are fertile. It keeps from having too many age variations. I tip at a different angle when ever I put a new egg in. Seems to work. I do the same with my geese eggs. When it starts to get warmer, I just put them under the steps in the garage which is a bit cooler.

From what I've seen the plasic turner flats for the GQF sportsman work great for pre-incubation turning (if you're setting very many eggs), just prop 1 side up with a scrap peice of 2x4 and switch it to the other side when you go to turn them. Thats what I plan to use.

Rittert- I use 1/4 (0.25)cc to the back of the neck. Be sure to get it on their skin, not on the feathers. I don't put it under their wing. I've had excellent luck using it. We have goats that we use it on, so I just borrow a few cc's of that when I want to treat the chickens. By the way, how is the hen doing that was scratching and shaking her head, stretching and yawning?

Be sure to go ahead and order some of the VetRx. It is a good thing to have on hand if your birds get any kind of respiratory problems.
