I just read an email from my sister out at Garden City. She was telling me exactly that. She said the dust was so bad out there that she couldn't see Garden City at all. She said all she could see was one of the water towers on the west side. It sure didn't sound like fun.
Here's another (not so pleasant) thought. Much of that dust and dirt blowing around is from the nearby feedlots and the cattle stirring around. I've been at my sister's place when that happens and the dust smells just like cow stuff.
Anyway, welcome and we are glad you are here (both of you new members) I will be moving sometime in the next year, and northern Arkansas is one of my considerations. It sure is beautiful there.
DANZ-Sorry you are having one of those days. We are feeling the same way today, too. I have a question for you or anyone else that hatches a lot of chicks. I am having trouble with a few chicks with spraddle legs. I can fix them with the vet wrap and have had 100% success getting them up on their feet, but they are spraddled when they come out of the hatcher. Generally it's the marans that have the problem. The marans are my biggest chicks, and I'm thinking my hatching trays are just too short and they can't stand up in them. I have stuff in there so they can get their footing, but they do seem rather squatted in there. Do you think the short trays are the problem? If so, I may be building some different hatching trays one of these days.
Oh! I hatched what I believe is a melanistic chick. It is coal black. I believe it is a black ameraucana, but all of my black ameraucana chicks are black with white tummies. This one has shiny black fuzz, beak, legs, everything! I have never seen as chick as black as this thing. I'm going to post a pic of it... maybe tomorrow on the ameraucana breeders thread to see what some of the breeders think. In the meantime, it sure is easy to tell which one it is!
