Awww...great pics! I would be really careful about that top brooder as it doesn't look like there is much room for them to get out of the light when they are too warm, and the plastic holds in heat VERY well. I would put that light on a rheostat (dimmer) switch so you can adjust the temperature if they appear to be too warm.

Thanks for the heads up! So far, it's been 92-93 degrees in there, depending on if I have a window open in the back. I'll have to get a dimmer soon!

I'm 175 posts behind! Yikes!

Just had to pop in to celebrate my first broody hen! It's our tiny white Serama hen and it's just the most adorable thing in the world. She kept swiping eggs and sitting on the fake eggs so I decided maybe she was serious about the whole thing so I let the kids give her a couple eggs. It was so cute watching her gather them in under her.

YAY!!!!!!!!! I hope she makes a good mother. She's been sitting very determinedly for like 3 days so we'll see.

Just had to pop in to celebrate my first broody hen! It's our tiny white Serama hen and it's just the most adorable thing in the world. She kept swiping eggs and sitting on the fake eggs so I decided maybe she was serious about the whole thing so I let the kids give her a couple eggs. It was so cute watching her gather them in under her.

YAY!!!!!!!!! I hope she makes a good mother. She's been sitting very determinedly for like 3 days so we'll see.

I had a very busy day today. I woke up at 1:00am to work this morning getting the first software update deployed after tax season. Didn't get back to bed till 3:00am. Then woke up around 8:30am to feed the chickens. Went to Atwoods to pick up a couple of hanging feeders (they were on sale) and a couple bags of feeds. They ran out of chicks starter but i did get some flock raiser that i need. Then I took all the chicks outside to enjoy some sun while I cleaned up their brooder. After I got it all cleaned up, the salmon hen decided to test run it for me while the chicks are out there enjoying the weather. I had to shoo her out before I put all the chicks back in the brooder. I hung the new feeder in there and took the long red feeder out. They waste so much food on that. I also did a semi major cleaning of the big coop. We finally have some nice weather today so I hung a couple of loads of laundry out. They were all dry by evening before I went to.feed the chickens. Then i flew the kite with DS and took the kids to the park right before 8:30pm which was almost dark. Came home and cleaned the house and just now have time to open the kindle fire to post.

Didn't mean to type a book. Guess I better get some shut eye. I wish I had time to go to the nurseries since they were having their flatsale.

I will get caught up with the posts tomorrow morning since can do multi quot on the laptop.

Sounds like a very looooong day. Just an FYI about your chicks... I recently let out some of my barred rock chicks where the adults had been. They all came down with coccidiosis. It didn't even occur to me at the time that that would happen, because I still thought I was feeding medicated chick starter. (which I discovered I'd bought the wrong bag and didn't notice). I had one chick die right away. So be on the alert for lazy, tired, fluffed up chicks. They won't poop blood right away. That happens right at the end. Fortunately, I keep a big bottle of Corid on hand at all times. I thought for sure that all of them would die, but they rebounded very quickly. Corid needs to be run for a full 5-7 days in the water IF they have contracted it from the ground/dirt. If you stop too soon, it comes right back. I know this from experience.

Oooi, thanks for the heads up. Yes, I do feed them medicated chick starter but will keep an eye on them to make sure they are A-OK. Can never be too careful with chicks, that's for sure. I thought about getting a bottle of Corid from the store but don't know how long it will keep so I didn't get it. May be I should get it anyway when I go back to pick up some chick starter tomorrow. I certianly don't want to lose any chicks at this point. Come to think of it, I better call DH so he can give it a quick look over to make sure the chicks are OK.

The Salmon hen is getting so much better and she is feisty! She refused to stay still for me to put the triple antibiotic on her so I just continue to spray the Vetrimycin for now. I let her go outside to enjoy the weather but she walked right back inside to her make-shift hospital kennel. Silly hen.

I had a similarly busy day but it was fun stuff. I absolutely loved the weather. The kids planted more strawberries and asparagus. So we'll see how that turns out this year.

I'm thinking of taking some chicks to the Mulvane swap. Has anyone gone to that swap before? Any insight would be appreciated since I've only attended one swap and just went to pick up some birds.
