Olathe here, new to the game. Wondering if legal or not. I get conflicting answers, so keeping the down low here with 2 at the moment. :yiipchick

HEChicken, I use gallon jugs as a water supply for many of my adult poultry when it starts to freeze. I cut an opening so they can get to the water. I cut them where they will still hold about a half gallon or more. I use 2 gallon cat litter jugs to haul hot water to fill, if they are frozen. If they are frozen solid, I lay the jug on its side and add the water. They don't seem to get the water as dirty. I also uses the milk jugs as feeders and hang them where they are just off the floor. They don't waste as much feed that way.

Welcome to the Consolidated KS thread. We are glad to have you. Can't help you with the legality in Olathe, though. We live in the country near Admire.

This is an older thread on the topic.

Welcome KSChickieMomma! We do love pictures here, so anytime you feel like sharing, we'd love to see some.

I'll try to remember everything I wanted to remember ...

I love love LOVE that humidifier thingie.

I do use essential oils and herbal/natural remedies whenever I can. The combination of lavender, lemon, and peppermint is supposed to be good for allergy problems. I mix it with coconut oil and a bit of shea butter, and use it as a hand cream. DH & I use local, raw honey in our oatmeal every day. I diffuse a few drops each of peppermint, rosemary, and lemon when I'm having a little more trouble breathing. These things all seem to help to a certain extent. When we feel like we're getting too congested and afraid it will lead to a sinus infection, we use a product called Sinusalia, which I get from Vitamin Shoppe online. We've also recently (too recently to tell if it really helps) added a product from Spark Naturals called Shield, which is an essential oil blend that is supposed to boost the immune system. I also recently read you can rub a little bit of lemon EO on the sides of your nose to combat a runny nose. I've tried it a few times and it actually does work for me.

HEChicken, I think you offered that poor scared dog what looked like a den, and he jumped at the chance to get away from all these giant metal cars and people chasing him. Once inside, you were completely nonthreatening and let him approach you when and how he was comfortable with it. Surely his owners care enough to come get him, even if it costs them a bit, since they went to the trouble and expense of having him chipped.

Wow, has it gotten cold today. We're back to getting only one egg a day, I think due to the cold and Old Sophia still being broody.

Dang it. I know there was more that I was going to respond to, but it's completely left my head.

Danz, I do remember hearing about OQB injecting directly into the sinuses but that sound so painful! I've only had one sinus infection in my life but my memory of it is that the sinuses were incredibly painful and sensitive and I think a doctor would have had to strap me to a gurney to get me to submit to an injection directly into them. I will keep it in mind though so if the systemic injections don't make a difference, I may give that a try.
Luckily turkeys sinuses are not like ours. When one of our bronze turkeys got a sinus infection a couple of months ago we were advised by someone here on the turkey list to directly inject into the sinuses with teramycin, one half cc in each side. We had already tried treating the water without any luck so we went to get some teramycin. We couldn't find any at the vet supply but they did have Agrimycin 200, (oxytetracycline) and used that. We gave it three injections, one every other day and it cleared up.

We also used it on a peachick who had lost an eye somehow and became very swollen, cleared that up too.

We have been having a wild turkey staying with us lately. It mostly retreats to the creek at night to roost in the trees. It sometimes roosts above the peacocks pen with our dominate tom. We noticed it has been swelling up for a day or two so when it wandered into the shop and started eating our of OQB's hand I decided to catch it and give it an injection. Funny how we worry about wild birds bringing us infections and here our wild turkey picks one up and we treat it...

Anyway, it doesn't seem that the turkeys feel the injections, neither our or the wild bird even flinched when I administered it. Just be sure that you have someone who can hug that big bird while you do it. The target area for the shot was about a half inch in front and a little below the eye. I also only inserted the needle less than a quarter inch. There is usually a little bleeding that stops right away, but getting the medicine right into the swelling seems to work quite effectually.

Danz, I used to have extremely bad sinus infections, the kind that made me want to end it all. I used all types of preparations and medications with no avail, god I was miserable. Finally I got tested and began a desensitizing program, it was supposed to take two years of weekly injections, but I quit after about eighteen months, long story, but the short of it is that it worked wonderfully. I haven't had a serious bout like I had before since and I highly recommend you look into it.

KKB congrats on being able to do that with the turkeys, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to inject something into a bird's sinus. I have only recently started giving birds injections at all. I had always given them meds in the water up till then. I guess everyone's experiences with allergy testing & treatment are different. I had all the testing years ago & went through the shots for awhile, but could see no improvement so I stopped. I just take daily allergy meds now & use saline nose drops. I used to use a prescription nose spray, but it made my nose bleed, so I stopped using it & just started using the plain saline nose spray. It really seems to help better than the prescription did.

cherwill, what is the lemon EO you're talking about you rub on the side of your nose? That sounds interesting.

One thing I'm trying to do is to use more natural cleaning products in the house. I have started making my own laundry detergent & I have made a cleaning spray that I really love. It's very simple, just white vinegar & orange peels that you steep for two weeks & then drain the liquid off of the peels & put it in a spray bottle. Boy does that stuff clean greasy dirt & all, I love it & it doesn't even smell like vinegar after it steeps with the orange peels for 2 weeks. I also found that plain baking soda made into a paste cleans my ceramic stove top a lot better than the stuff you buy to clean it with. It doesn't scratch the surface & it even cleans off cooked on stuff on the burners. I'm going to look into some other things to make as well. HEChicken I have been using that deodorant for a few months now that you told us about & really like it. It lasts for a long time too.

Trish, it's just lemon essential oil, any brand you like. I put a drop on my fingertip and rub it into the sides of my nose.

The orange stuff you make sounds interesting, especially since it cleans grease. How much orange peel and how much vinegar do you use?

Oh OK, that makes sense, I may have to try that. The orange cleaner I make I just use a quart sized jar, approximate size, whatever you have sitting around. I use jars I have saved from sauces & you will need a lid. Peel two oranges in strips & put them in the jar & then pour white vinegar over the peels & cover them completely & put the lid on the jar. Leave them to steep for 2 weeks & then drain the liquid off & throw away the peels in the compost. I put mine in a spray bottle, it's easier to use that way. I have used this stuff on kitchen grease & it does a great job of cutting the grease & it even cleaned some dried on stuff that had been sitting in the bottom of my fridge that had run underneath the veggie drawer. I sprayed it on & left it a few minutes to soak & it came right off, I was impressed.

Thank you for the detail - that helps a lot. My challenge will be the part about having someone hug the turkey while I do it but perhaps I can bully a family member into it….the one I did yesterday was anxious enough to get away from me that I'm certain I wouldn't want to try injecting into the sinuses without someone holding her. I did manage to band one of them last night though, so at least going forward I'll be able to tell which one I've treated.

I remember you talking about this awhile back - I still need to try it myself. Do you know if it works on tangerine/mandarine peels as well? I have some of those sitting right here but don't have any oranges at the moment.

Cherwill, I'm using EO's more these days too but don't have lemon. I will definitely have to try that next time I have a cold.
