Consolidated Kansas

Sharol you worry so much. I would think your chicks would be old enough to integrate with the bigger birds. They aren't so small at this point where they can't at least run away from an older bird if they decide to pick on them a little. I think Copper will do her best to defend them as well.
I was so busy the last couple days I really haven't had time to post. It's raining off and on today so I am taking a little time to relax.
I had a big hatch day. I hatched about 28 turkey poults. I'm not getting eggs now cause the girls are all wanting to be broody. I keep adding nesting areas but last night I had 5 hens on one nest. They are stating to break eggs so I am just going to have to take the eggs I guess. Any that survived should be well started. I hate to do that to the hens but too many birds on too few eggs just doesn't work.
I hatched a ton of chicks. I didn't even count them. I'm sure there must be at least 100 of them again. The one thing I didn't hatch many of was barred rocks and I needed several to fill an order this weekend. I only had two eggs in that hatch. I had gotten rid of my excess hens and only kept the two best Reese ones and it must have been about that time period when I was waiting for eggs again. I wasn't hatching any that came from the entire group.
I have someone coming for birds tomorrow and I'm thrilled. It should free up some more pen space. I need to make a list of what all he was interested in and the prices I quoted. I really am not sure how much he is going to take.
I added some metal roofing to the little barrel houses last night that the young Araucanas are using to hopefully keep some of the rain out. They keep sleeping outside so I hope they decided to go in during the rain. I'll have to get out and check them later.
I hatched dozen Sebbie babies but lost the same amount that never pipped. My incubator is really acting up. I think I need to move it around and maybe even buy a new thermostat for that one. It worked perfectly before and this one is only a few years old. I'd like to install an digital thermostat to it if I can because they are so much more dependable. Probably not as long a life but they adjust for the temperature of the room a lot better. Of course that is money I don't have to spare right now.
HEChicken I was wanting to plant some more things yesterday but didn't have time. Nothing has come up yet because we haven't had any rain other than a few sprinkles that just evaporate. Today it is raining though so I wish I had gotten more seeds planted. Now it will probably keep raining and be way too wet to get out there. My lousy luck.
I built a ramp for the little coop that DH built last night but didn't get it mounted. I got a few bales of straw which are now wet, so hopefully when it stops raining I can move another breeding group of birds in there.

Hello! I am also from BuCoKs.
It's nice to know there are other BYC forum members nearby.

Hello.. Are you looking for Bantum Cochins or Giant Cochins? I have both black and blue big girls who are already laying. And I have eggs in the incubator that should hatch around the 9th of next month.

Hello Everyone. My name is Tammi. I live in BuCoKs, about 25 minutes east of Wichita. I own a quilting company.
I have a small flock of HUGE giant Cochins that I purchased from a breeder last June. They are my big babies, and I love them. I have hatched out one incubator full of their eggs with beginners luck. Nearly 100% hatched. My chicks were all sold in less than 24 hours after I put them on craigslist.
I currently have a few cochin eggs, 20 Cream Legbar, and 40 Black Copper Marans eggs incubating. You are still a beginner on the second go around, right? I am praying for a great hatch.
I've read posts on the BYC forum for a long time, but just recently joined. I was elated this morning when I found this consolidated Kansas thread.
If you were hoping for rain, I hope you are getting some. We desperately need the rain. But I for one am hoping that the tornado threats stay away from the land of Oz this weekend.
many Blessings,
Tammi Jo:)

How right you are. I opened up the door yesterday, and Copper let one other hen know that these babies were OFF LIMITS. No one else (even my crabby Welsumer) has bothered them. Today they were all out all morning until the rain started again (yeah, real rain) with no complications.

I worry too much.

LOL Sharol. I'm glad they are doing well. I do the same thing. I actually ran out in the rain while ago to make sure my little Araucanas were okay. The dumb things were in the rain but seemed to be enjoying it so I guess they are okay. I still worry though. I do the same thing with my English who are probably 3 months old now.
It's easy to give advice about worrying but I sure don't practice what I preach.
friendshipstar I used to raise large cochins and they were absolutely my favorite before I decided to start raising imported birds. I still have one beautiful offspring LF gold laced cochin cockerel who is supposed to go to his new home tomorrow. He looks just like his daddy and is a gorgeous young bird. They are wonderful docile birds.

I picked up a little 6-week old fainting goat kid today and thought the name Boo! was appropriate :)

I was out in the field with all the goats, lambs, Sam and Holly (My GPs).. Sam started barking; he and Holly took off.. all the goats and lambs went running with them (they always do that) - well, poor little Boo fainted! It was sooooo freaking funny... he just klunked right over! Holly stopped dead in her tracks and came back to Boo and sniffed him...He was down about 4 seconds and then got back up..

I about died laughing when I read this:lol:

The new hens in quartine had a treatment of Vaseline mixed with tea tree oil and sprayed them. Their feet look so much better.

Holy cow was it windy last night. I had the windows opened upstairs in my bed room and I thought a train came roaring into the room!

Hechicken, so the light brown ones were the NH chicks? They are just too cute! I guess the tutors did a great job with the turkey poults!

Sharol, I tend to worry a lot myself. This is the reason why I haven't had a good night sleep since I have kids. Glad Copper and her chicks are doing well.

Danz, just saw your new chicken house. You are definitely quite a handy woman! I have the ideas but for the life of me can't put that idea into a project. Sounds like you are busy hatching chicks this Spring.

Sunflower, that is just too funny with fainting goat.

Michelle, glad you have the mites under control. They sure are nasty.

Friendshipstar, welcome. Sounds like you are hatching quite a few chicks. Congrats on almost 100% hatch rate. Black copper maran is on my wish list.

We didn't get that much rain at all. Just enough to wet the top layer of dirt and that was it. This is the 2nd time we got teased in a week when it cones to rain. Apparently we have higher chance of getting more rain this weekend but this time, they are forecasting large hails to go with it. Sigh... we will see what happens.

Have a great evening everyone.
