Need you guys help. I got three Cochin pullets and they have scaly leg mites. They are in quartine for 30 days so I need to get it cleared up before I move them with my Cochin roo

Hello all. I read this forum daily and have learned so much from this thread. I have a problem with my goose and asked for help on the goose thread. I did receive one response but really would like some advice from this thread. Here is my post and a picture of my foamy eyed goose:

My goose has white "froth" in her left eye. The other eye looks irritated too but not as bad. I have been washing with warm saline solution but in just a little while it is "frothy" again. My gander's eyes are starting to look like this too. They have a pool with clean water along with a bucket to drink from and wash out their eyes. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to treat them? Do I need an antibiotic or is it just an irritation that will clear on its own? Thanks for your input and help. It is greatly appreciated.
dwink2 you need to get some neosporin or some neomyacin that does not have the pain killer in it. You will need to squirt it in their eyes a few times a day for a few days. When it starts improving you can reduce it to a couple times a day. It will take a couple weeks or so to heal it but it will heal it.
This kind of infection is usually caused by playing in dirty water but other irritants might cause itas well. You can use an over the counter brand of stuff too. Also if you have any veterycin eye spray to wash them out before you put the neosporin in that also helps.
michelleml, I recommend making a dip out of permethrin...NOT pyrethrin. And dip the legs in it then spray the vent, under the wings and the back with the same mix. There will be a mixing chart for chickens on the container. Then coat the legs with vaseline to help further sooth and smother out the mites. Repeat the process in 10 days. While you are at it I would spray the rest of yours chickens and their coop with the same mix. I just use a regular garden sprayer and spray the bedding a little and even let it fall on the chickens ..not heavy but just so they get in the spray.
Very very busy day. I have been hatching birds of all kinds today. I have no idea how many all together. I am trying to let them get dry before I bother them. I already sold 4 of the turkey poults that hatched.
I moved 128 chicks to the new brooder box I built yesterday. And I got my Araucana chicks moved to their own pen this afternoon. They are such tiny birds it doesn't seem right for them to be out but I know they are plenty old enough.

I just picked these girls up on Monday. They are not with my flock yet. I have them in my shop at least for 30days. I put Vaseline mixed with tea tree oil. I will get spray and put that on them tomorrow. Thanks

Danz thank you so much! I truly respect your advice. I am always so impressed with the knowledge that you all share with us less experienced. It is a relief to know that it can be cleared up. It has been so dry and windy here and when it finally rained a couple of days ago they played like little kids in the mud puddles. They sure do keep life exciting. Thanks again.

I have my first broody hen sitting on 4 eggs. I didn't really need any new chicks but she was so cute with them that I let her have them. She is such a loner chicken that I thought that this might get her some close friends. I am hoping it doesn't just give me 4 more shy chickens. I am amazed at each of the different personalities that the girls have.

You are welcome. I just hope your birds get well without incidence. I had a whole group of ducks a few years ago that insisted in playing in the ditch out front even when the water had set there forever and gotten really nasty. I had to treat the entire flock. My BIL is a pharmacist and looked up the makeup of prescription drugs for eye infections and determined the formulation was identical to the prescription drugs. The only difference of course would be the level or purity required for topical eye prescriptions. I've used it on all breeds of birds for various eye infections and it works like a charm. It seems to take a little longer on chickens but it will eventually work on them too.

It is very quiet around here with the kids gone. Sigh. DD and the grands went home Monday morning.

We have been doing some small controlled burns along fence lines and in the lagoon area. So far they have gone well. It sure looks tidier with the tall dry weeds gone, and we finally got some suitable weather.

Graycie is setting on 7 eggs. I stole 6 of them yesterday, and at least 4 of those 6 are showing some development (including one of the EE green eggs). I don't need any babies either, but it is fun having chicks around. Now I have to get Copper to integrate her 4 week olds with the flock during the next 2 weeks so I'll have the hoop for the new chicks and mom. I don't remember when Marlena moved back to the coop with her brood last summer, but from the pictures it looks like they were about 6 weeks old. The kids in the hoop are 4 weeks tomorrow, and the eggs are due in 2 weeks (tomorrow). It may be close. I think I'll start by letting Copper out with her chicks while the other hens are out one of these days.

Anyone have any advice? As I recall, it worked ok last summer.

This is frustrating! This evening as I was doing chores, I could see rain clouds and even thunderstorms around us, but NONE, NOT ONE got here. There's even a flash flood warning about an hour East of us, but we didn't even get a drop of rain! ugh! We need the rain SO BADLY out here!!! After two years in a row that were ALMOST the driest on record, we desperately need the moisture! There's a good chance (40%) for this weekend, so here's me hoping and praying we get a good rain out of it!

Stopping in to say good morning. It is raining here!!! Not a lot and it probably won't last but at this point I'll take every drop we get. I couldn't believe it last night when the radar showed both NE and OK getting dumped on while the storm did a wide arc around this part of KS. So when I heard raindrops first thing after the alarm went off this morning, I couldn't have been more thrilled.

I spent yesterday working in my garden and planted a bunch of seeds. I didn't turn on the sprinkler last night because I was hoping for rain and I guess that paid off (even though I don't expect we'll get much so I'll probably still have to water tonight). I still have a long way to go on my garden but I am gradually getting it filled up with seeds, at least. I even planted a couple of seedlings out the other day. I hope they survived the strong winds last night.

I had a good turkey hatch on Tuesday. I hatched a few tutors to go with them but the tutors have done such a good job that I think their students are ready to graduate already. When I turned on the light this morning, a lot of turkeys ran out from under the EcoGlow and immediately ate and drank. So last night I revised the role of two of the tutors to be broody breakers instead. I gave them to one hen but another "stole" them and I figured it doesn't much matter which hen is a mother, as long as I have one less broody taking up a nest box, so I let her have them. I moved her to a broody pen after dark and checked in the rain first thing this morning and the little family seemed to be doing fine.

In the pic below you can see two little NH chicks - those are now under the mama hen. Missing from the pic is the last couple of turkeys to hatch - they were still zipping when I took this - and another tutor who hatched yesterday morning. I have one more tutor due tomorrow that is pipped this morning and that will be it for this hatch. Ducklings due next week though….
