I am wondering just what is the law in Olathe? Most cities will allow a few hens but not roosters. Does Olathe ban all chickens or domestic livestock?

CCarter I don't see anything listed for Olathe yet in the BYC laws section. Overland Park is listed though, so hopefully Olathe will be similar. https://www.backyardchickens.com/laws/search.php

FYI
for those in Indy, time to renew your permits. I got my letter a couple of days ago and renewed my "chicken yard" permit today. It was decidedly unpleasant. I recommend calling ahead and making sure Donna is working before you go in.

I was surprised when I did since it wasn't prorated originally. Thought I had until next summer.

Of the 2 there, one was nice enough, but didn't know how to do it. The other greeted me with "OMG! I can't believe we even allow those things in the city!"

She also wanted to know exactly how many we have. That's not a condition of the permit according to the code that I've read. Unfortunately I had one of the kids with me who promptly said 50-60. I thought she was going to have a heart attack and deny us the permit. I said it was closer to 30, which it will be once the meatbirds are gone. I was going to let them go another week or two, but I guess not as I imagine somebody from the city will be by to check things out this next week.

I asked why she thought they should be banned, especially when all the big cities allow them (rattled off a few), to which she was incredulous. The other lady there, who said she used to raise "banties", confirmed what I was saying. Why is it that people who don't know anything about anything and have no direct interest anyways (seriously, there's got to be zero chance anybody she lives close to has chickens, at least not that she's aware of) think they have to deny everyone else everything just because?

Ivywoods and CCarter- the law in Olathe is NO livestock but someone has found loop holes, I saw their post not too long ago on here. When I lived there I lived on 2 acres and my neighbor across the street had chickens forever but I was told they were Grandfathered in-we all live at 119th and Nelson and there was about 80 acres behind us that was just woods but now its a housing development.
I know that Roeland park is now arguing about all this and continued the vote into this month, some lady got her chickens taken away from her and the neighbors are freaking out that if they allow a few chickens, whats next a cow in the yard lol. I agree with no roosters but no one would even know if there was hens-the people are also trying to say that they dont want the smell lol-what smell? Yet your neighbor can have 2 big dogs in a yard-talk about smells lol. So many people need to educate themselves before running their mouths. What I also find funny is that I know several people in Roeland Park that have exotic birds (parrots, Macaws, etc) and no one says anything about all the noise that comes from those birds-I love them but they can scream. I would want my neighbor to have a few chickens over any of those birds.

Well I agree wholeheartedly. We have a double yellow amazon parrot. He is my hubby's pet. He talks a lot, but he can holler and scream when he wants to, and his whistle is extremely loud. Smell is not an issue as we keep in in the house of course.

To me, NOTHING smells worse than someone who has too many CATS.
