A late Happy Halloween to you all. I've been so busy today but did get a lot done. I got all the Mandarin nest boxes built. Tomorrow I'm hoping to get them stained. We went to Emporia this evening and bought more fittings etc so I should be able to finish hooking up the pump and filter etc. I was sure hoping Walmart would have their pumpkins marked down to half price after dark but they didn't. I had planned to give the chickens a treat. Kids were in all the businesses trick or treating. It's too bad they can't go door to door like I did when I was a kid.
DH got the new Mandarin shelter house built except for doors and openings. I would like to finish it myself cause he works the next few days but I'll just stain it and wait for him I guess. He hates me to work on his projects but certainly doesn't mind giving me opinions on mine.

I moved some more young chickens out with the big ones today. I'm going to have to do a final count and assessment soon to figure out how many roosters I need to get sold.
Hawkeye, the coop is looking great.
Ivy did look totally baffled when she looked in that box of chickens! Confusion then glee! What a sweet sister!
I love the speckled sussex. I've always thought they were awesome looking.
A few years ago I never thought the day would come when I find true beauty in a chicken. I have so many I consider absolutely stunning.
I love my birds!

Good pumpkin carving, too! This is the first year that we really enjoyed the carving and my son got to wield the little knife.

Danz, I'm glad you got the nests done! Gosh, we dont have much time left now- I saw on the news last night that we're getting cold weather on Wed. Oh, and we did take our kids trick or treating in my in-laws neighborhood last night. We went door to door, and it was a lot of fun. LOTS of kids out last night. We do participate in the other events, too though (trunk or treat, etc) so we can get a lot of use out of those costumes! LOL

It's a preschool day, so I don't know how much I can work on. Sigh.

I got up late and I'm already behind. I have so much to get done today. I have to get these projects wrapped up today because tomorrow it is going to be miserable. Other than finishing the Mandarin pen I really have to get some power to the Serama house so they can have a little heat. I have some plexiglass I need to cut for the windows in the Serama and the bantam polish house as well. I was going to just replace the wood that came out of the vent windows we put in this summer when it got so hot but DH seemed to think I should use plexiglass instead. So one more project to tackle today. I just hope this front doesn't move in more quickly than it's supposed to. I need every minute I have.
Y'all better start shopping for those soup recipes. I think you'll need it tomorrow to warm yourself up.

Hi all! I've been offline for too long but it's great to catch up a bit. So glad to see everyone survived the record setting summer, now on to winter prep. Well it seems all but 3 of my birds are moulting so I had to actually buy some eggs at the store

Go get em' chicken danz!

Hawkeye95 your coop looks like it was done by a professional (Possible second job??).

Trish44 your birds look really great! I was wondering where you got them. I am looking to get some more after loosing 3 of my hens this summer (lab results showed heat exhaustion and we got a handle on that problem). I think the Speckled Sussex have the best disposition and do lay a light tan/brown egg. Ours were right at 4 months when they started laying at Christmas last year.

Todays project is to find some black oil sunflower seeds. I read there good for moulting birds due to the oil and protein, does that sound right?

The best price I found last year for black sunflower seeds was at Walmart in a 50 pound bag. They beat all the other prices by at least half. I haven't seen what they are this year. I imagine like everything else the price is higher. Also might check an orshlem's if there is one nearby. They often sell them bulk and you can save a few dollars. Some of the other farm type and feed type stores do as well.

Suburbchic I got my Speckled Sussex from a breeder in a nearby town that I know & she was having to downsize for winter. They had bought a bunch of hay from someone & it was stolen before they could go pick it up. They had to purchase more hay & with the cost of that & feed prices in general she is having to sell some of her stock. I bought her last trio of Sussex. I know she still has a few other breeds she is clearing out, but no more of that one.

I have been buying the Black Oil Sunflower Seeds from Wal Mart & feeding them to my birds with no problem, it is cheaper there than Orschelyn's. I don't buy corn there, I will buy it from Orschelyn's or the local Co-Op. I have not checked the Co-Op to see if they have sunflower seed or their prices as of yet. I have been stopping in Wichita when I've been up there for something at TSC to buy the layer feed, it's cheaper there than Orschelyn's & they have 50# bags vs. 40# at Orschelyn's.

I guess times are tuff if people are resorting to stealing hay. Guess I'll check Walmart. I did read somewhere that some of the bird seed at retail stores has pesticides but if you don't find that on the bag it should be ok. Thanks for the help.

If anyone knows anyone selling SS chicks or hatching eggs, let me know. I'm hoping by next spring to find some.
Does anyone else find the Barred Rocks a little to aggressive?

Ivywoods, I sent u a pm about the eggs today. I tried to reply before but your box was full. I think it went through now though today. We are still planning on meeting u later.
