Danz, I don't seem to have the Gardner Swap on my lists on the FB swaps, how did we miss that? Can you give me the date & times & location for that swap so I can add it to our list? Is it on a Sunday? Unless I could talk my DH into going with me he would probably have heart failure if I drove that far for a peacock. So is it just an auction or is there a swap meet too? I guess I just blanked out on people talking about it because I thought we already had the info & it's so far for me. I am looking for one more buck Mini Rex too, maybe if I came I could find that there too. We would not be able to get anything big because we would have to bring our car. Our truck doesn't go very far from home any more, it's really old. My DH is getting mad at me for taking rabbits & birds in our new car, but our truck is old & his old car isn't doing well either, so what else can I do? Speaking of having to clean, yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I have my son & his girlfriend coming at the end of the week & my house, well let's just say it's not company friendly right now. I have neglected it with doing things for my chickens & all & now I've got to get on it big time this week. It's not that my son would care, but he's bringing his girlfriend & I don't want her to see it in the mess it's in. I have painting to finish in the livingroom because I put that on hold & I really need to get it done so we can move the furniture back where it goes. Arrggghhh, I hate cleaning with a passion, I would rather do almost anything than that. I know it's a necessary evil, but it's not my favorite thing to do. It's kind of like having to listen to someone run their fingernail across a chalkboard.

Well now I'm not sure what to do about the peacock. If I wait & there aren't any at any of the swaps then I'm just out of luck. On the other hand I hate to pay more than I have to for one. They just seem to be going higher right now even with them molting. There is another gal on the swap with some, but she wants $65 for the males & won't go down any. These up by Newton are yearlings, so just about the right age to get one I think. I have read you can teach the yearlings really easily to stay on your property where the older ones are harder to teach. I would like for them all to eventually free-range when the young ones are old enough.

Loved the Silkie video! So did my kids!

I am going to have to try the other versions of lentils. We love jalepenos.

Danz, if Hopper boy gets too lonely once his buddy has other responsibilities, could he be put with another d'uccle, even if they aren't the same color? I wanted to get a pullet his color when he turned out to be a crower, but never did. If I had I would happily share it. I do have a pretty Mille fleur he used to hang out with if that would help. She is getting ready to lay, or become noisier than he was, not sure... She makes the oddest cackles over and over. The D'uccles are my friendliest and most curious in my little flock. I have a porcelin too. She buddies with my EE and they are inseparable. So funny to watch!

I read a bit about those olandsk dwarfs. They sound very much like my d'uccles personality wise. Very neat little birds!! The buckeyes sound fun too! I would love to be assured the mice aren't eating my feed or near my house.....

No eggs today, not even from Bloom, but man were those birds hungry!!! They ate twice their normal amount of food plus treats of yogurt and left over noodles and quite a bit of BOSS. They acted like they were starving and I know they weren't. They definitely were much noisier this evening, almost as if they were telling us off for not checking on them throughout the day:)

Found this on pinterest in my search for a variety of good and easy egg recipes.

I think my Sera could make this :) she probably will soon.

Oh, her next surgery is the 10th of October, so she has a bit of recoup time. They will be moving teeth and fixing part of her eye then. The next one will prob be in Dec, and she will have her jaw wired shut over Christmas for it all to heal. Rotten luck, but she announced to her new teacher that she will still come to school, and is LUCKY because she can drink all the smoothies she wants then :)

Medawinks, what a sweetie that Sera looks at it as being an adventure and getting to eat smoothies. You've obviously been (and still are!) a fantastic mom to her! :) Love her attitude, and what a remarkable personality. I love hearing her stories.

Okay, so I tried a couple of times to "multi" several posts and then in the middle of typing lost it. I don't even know what happened. I was literally in the middle of typing and it just blinked away-- in fact, my entire browser just shut down. I was so angry I had to get up and get away from the computer. UGH.

Love the talk about the chickens eating mice. Never seen mine do that, but I would hope they would eat them! Trish, I would think that $50 would be reasonable for a year old peacock... but what do I know? I just know that a semi decent Silkie (not even show quality!!) will go for $50. Heck, if you want a much nicer quality silkie, you'll be in the $100's pretty quickly.... so I'm thinking a peacock would surely run the same??? Or is my thinking totally crazy now that I've been silkie-fyied? Wouldn't it be nicer if these birds only ran about $30. Sigh. Oh dare to dream!!! hahaha!

So it has been a crazy Monday already! My oldest went to his first day of school today! Rode the bus as usual. Then I took my middle child in for kindergarten assessments today from 10:30-2:45pm. Then, ran some errands, picked up chick feed for the little guys. Then when the bus came, it was enough time to have my oldest get another practice in for piano and then we were off to piano lessons, and then after that-- we had a 4-H gathering at a flower shop in Mulvane because we are working on putting up a window display for Old Settlers Days. If you all drive downtown-- check out our window near the train depot, in the flower shop. Since the kids are really supposed to be doing most of the window building, it's not perfect, but it's pretty good for a group of young kids. :)

Danz, I looked on http://www.hopkinslivestock.com/. They had photos of young peafowl to tell sexes & I also found another forum page that I was able to see by the markings that mine are female. Mine are both India Blue & the males & females have distinctly different markings. So how dirt cheap are you talking about as far as price for a male peacock? I have found someone up by Newton that has some they are selling & she is asking $50 each. Is that a good price for adults or should I wait? I got mine as chicks so I don't really know what a good price is for an adult male. Gardner is a 3 hour drive one way for me, just pretty far for me to make in a day really for one bird. We have a couple of swap meets close by to me in Arkansas City & Mulvane that I may have to try to get to & also there is a brand new one that is supposed to start up here in Winfield in Sept. so there will be possible opportunities coming up if I know what price point to look for. It will be kind of nice if this swap makes it here in Winfield so I don't have to go anywhere to swap meets. They have just started having them in Arkansas City recently too, which is only 13 miles away for me.

If you want, I will go with you to my neighbors up the road.. they have dozens - if not more - of peacocks... I love hearing them in the mornings and evening. It might be worth a shot to see if they have anything they'd be willing to sell you. Let me know. I am free all week except for Wednesday - boyfriend coming over and we're putting up the 2nd coop wall.

Danz, well I found out this evening that the peacocks are black shoulder split to pied. I wouldn't mind the black shoulder part, but not sure about the pied. I usually don't like pied birds that much. Anyway, she's supposed to get me some pics tomorrow so I can see what they look like.

I went out tonight & tried to get one of these 4x4 posts that are hooked to this pen that my DH's ex-wife had used to try to pen up a dog. It wasn't good for much of anything & we have never used it. The posts are still good, but man I'm not sure it's worth having to spend all the time pulling all the staples out to get the fence off & pulling those posts up out of the ground. I worked for quite awhile & got the fence all off of this one corner one, but dug awhile & still couldn't get the post out. I'll see if my DH can pull it out or not. It may be worth just buying some more to use rather than going to all of that trouble. If I can get him to bring those partial railroad ties out then I can use those for some of what I need, but I don't think there is enough for the whole pen.

I got a new egg customer this evening & that is always good, now if my hens would pick back up again. They have really cut back in the heat, but now hopefully they will pick up again now that it's getting cooler. Oh & guess what, you all remember I had told you that one of my Lakenvelder hens had disappeared & I figured she had met up with a predator back in the trees. Well she re-appeared this evening, just out of the blue. I went in to check for eggs & do chores & there she was with her sister, weird. I have no idea where she has been for several days.

maybe she made a 10 mile round trip around the bend, across a highway and over a bridge to leave and then come back to you?

Sorry, couldn't help it.

Medawinks, I love that quiche recipe - I have saved it. My kids are old enough now to be able to read and follow recipes but don't have any interest in making anything except one likes to make chocolate chip cookies and the other likes to make brownies (from a mix, of course). But that is a recipe that maybe even they would find interesting enough to follow. If not, I'll follow it myself

Trish, that's great that the Lakenvelder came home - I wonder where she was? Perhaps she had a try at being broody somewhere but it didn't stick?

I had a red sexlink who was an awesome mouser. I used to get mice that nested under our Dogloo so every few days, I'd call her over and ask if she was ready. She'd stick her head down so she'd be ready to see the mice as soon as I lifted it, I'd count down "3-2-1" and on "1", lift the Dogloo. She'd dash under and more often than not, come out with a mouse in her beak. Then she'd thunk it on the ground a couple of times, tilt her head back, and down the hatch it went. I kept hoping the others would learn from her example but although they'd happily steal her prize and eat it, it didn't occur to any of them to catch their own. She is gone now and the rest of the flock seems quite happy to have "pets".
Hahahaha! That is a clever chicken! I have a RIR pullet that I bet would be a good mouser. She tags along behind me everywhere I go. I don't even like RIRs but I hatched a bunch of eggs for a friend and this one chick had part of the umbilicus hanging out still and all the other chicks starting picking at it so I told my friend I would just keep her with my silkie chicks and she could take the healthy chicks. Who knew she would turn into a smart and funny pullet!

I can't believe you got one by accident! They've been on my wish list for about three years and it never seems to work out to get them. The times I've had broodies, it has been times of the year I didn't want to risk shipped eggs for heat and the rest of the time we seem to have something or another going on so I haven't wanted to run the incubator.
It was supposed to be a polish egg but it was a darker brown and twice as big as the polish eggs so I set it and out popped a buckeye from the pen next door to the polish. Kinda wish I had more than one.

Isn't that always the way? When we want hens we get roos and when we want males we get females. It is!!!!

Oh you girls! Stinkers, both of you!!!

I had a cochin pullet that used to roost up high in the branches above the coop at night and I could never find her but she always jumped back down in the morning. The first night she did it I thought for sure she was gone and I was so upset and then there she was in the morning!

Alright! Promised eye candy for Danz!

And a proud serama broody with her clutch of jelly bean babies! Don't stick your fingers in there! She is vicious.

DH came out the bathroom the other night all upset because he wanted to pet one of the babies and the hen nailed him! I think it just bruised his pride but it sure was funny!
