Welcome PrairieChickens good name!

Welcome PrairieChickens. Where are you from? Tell us about yourself.
I agree with maidenwolf. There is a difference between a mean rooster that flogs people and a rooster that just hasn't learned his manners with the ladies yet. That seems to be more of a maturity thing. And the number of roosters you have makes a difference too. They seem to be less brutal to the ladies if they aren't competing with a lot of other roosters. Just my personal observation.

When I started the process, I knew that a lot of people are very misinformed when it comes to urban chickens. ..... Maybe if Overland Park passes their ordinance, maybe it will be easier for people to accept the fact that their oppinions of chickens are wrong and I can attempt to put my HOA restrictions up for vote then. Thanks for being such a great group!
It sounds like you have really done your homework and was doing the best you could! I know that moving from a house you likely love is not exactly an ideal situation, but perhaps that might be an idea to remove yourself from HOA's. Personally, I can see the benefit of an HOA ... but ONLY when you are trying to maintain your property values and someone's falling down fence, 3 foot high grass/weed lawn, or 10 junk cars in the front yard which are attracting rodents and predators alike are deterring buyers or dropping property value. It's not too often that someone moves in like that. I hate to put restrictions on what pets you can have in your private back yard; that is just going too far. But not all neighborhoods are set up with covenants, and just abide by city law. That seems much easier, because in all honestly, the city codes have very similar rules about those exact same problems anyway.

I think those are falcons, specifically Gryfalcons. They are know to inhabit Kansas and can be large with white plumage as you describe.
I looked up a picture of the Gryfalcons-- PRETTY!!! These hawks (or whatever they are) aren't white on top-- just on the bottom. But pure white!! When they open their wings, they are all white and they are much bigger than the hawks we had earlier. I'm hoping they move on, they are scary looking! If I didn't know better, I'd think we had a couple of Eagles out here! They really look like an eagle. They are hanging out together.

Wow, guys! I'm really behind! I glanced through some of the thread and saw there are lots of great money-saving tips.

Here is the thread I've spent the most time learning from. It has a link to the fermenting feed link. Just check out Beekissed's threads. I'm not saying I agree with every single thing she says. I am saying I've learned a lot from this thread that will help me keep my costs down.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...-horrors-anyone-want-to-follow-their-progress

Here's how fermenting the feed works. Just take what you already have on hand, measure out enough for one day's worth of feed. I put mine in a 5 gallon bucket. (Some use double 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in one. I tried that and wasn't crazy about it. The water drained too slowly for me so I just use a soup dipper to dip it up into a large strainer that I already had on hand.) Then fill with water, enough to completely cover the feed. Pour in a cup of apple cider vinegar with the "mother" in it. If it has been heat processed, there's no mother in it. I can get mine in the health food section of the grocery store. The brand name is Braggs and it comes in a quart jar. So that I don't have to keep buying the pricier Braggs, I buy the regular ACV at Walmart in the gallon size, pour off enough to accommodate half the Braggs ACV. Combine the Braggs with the regular and it will grow the mother in it, as well. Just keep adding some of the "mothered" ACV to the cheap ACV and you'll never have to buy the Braggs again.

Okay, so now you have your feed, water and ACV in your 5 gallon container. Let it sit. It will begin to get a whitish film on top as it begins to ferment. Depending upon how warm it is where you are, it should be fermented within 6 hours to 24 hours in cooler climates. It will also bubble a bit when it is really ripe, as you stir it. Stir it a couple times per day and add more ACV (just a glug or two) every couple of days and add water as needed, to keep the feed covered. When you take feed out for the day, replace the wet with the same amount of dry feed so it will be ready for the next day. You just keep it going like a sourdough starter for bread. Do not pour off the old liquid, continue to reuse it.

The advantage to the fermented feed is that it is a natural probiotic for your birds and the increased improvements in the birds digestive tract equates to a 12% increase of protein availability, plus an increase in the availability of the other nutrients from your feed. It's like using a higher quality feed without paying for it. I've spent a fortune on 68 Soluble for my birds because they needed the probiotics and extra vitamins to stay reasonably healthy. This is going to save me quite a bit in costs, preventive and after the fact for the birds. The birds go crazy for it and acted like I had been starving them, when in truth I kept dry feed available to them and the neighborhood mice, 24 hours a day.

The most tedious part of this is that I have ducks and chicks so I have to have 3 different feeds going simultaneously. Still, I've decided the extra effort is worth it and my kids have done a reasonably good job of helping me keep it going while I've been sick. The kids are sold on this feed as they love to see the birds run like crazy for the fermented feed. Our birds have always been friendly, but their display of eagerness to get at their food really makes the kids and I feel great. We've only been doing it a week and a half and are looking forward to one of the big benefits -- far less smelly poo!

I am feeling much better -- just need to get my strength back and I'll be ready to rock!
What a fantastic idea to pour Braggs into the cheap Walmart Gallon ACV!!!!! I'm going to try that! Brilliant!!!! This process sounds like a really tedious process. I already have so much to do around here, I don't know if this is something I want to do, even though it sounds like a really great idea! Where did you get your 5 gallon bucket? I don't have one of those, but I think I've seen them at Lowes? So do you just put the wet food with the AVC over dry food when you put it out to feed? Or are you mixing up an entire barrel of 5 gallons of feed?

My friend up here in Lawrence knows a chinese couple that is always seeking silkies for meat. If/When you make it up this way you could off-load them! I can give you the contact information if you want it. Just PM me.

Glad to hear that you are feeling better!!! Today is day three for me of no pain and no nausea, so I'm still hoping that it stays away. This has happened a couple times where I got about a week reprieve and the evil head reared itself again, so I'm not pushing myself at all, yet getting things done that I couldn't do otherwise. You'll get there. Just don't try to do too much or it will take more time!

I got one silkie egg today! She said that her 12 silkies either only laid one egg, or the black snake is back. She's going to try to bring me more tomorrow. I'd love to have a couple chicks for her to raise, but I'm even just happy letting her have one :) Are hatching rates higher for using a broody compaired to an incubator?
Not sure I want to make a trip to Lawrence every time I have a cull, but if I'm driving up that way, it would be a good way to get rid of them if I can't find pet homes. But I have 3 birds right now that should be butchered because they have severe wry back. They came out of my shipped eggs, and i was really disappointed with this breeder's birds. Won't be buying from her EVER again. In fact, I think I have enough lines right now that aren't related I can probably go a few years with out bringing in a new bird and rotating them myself with what I have. I want to use the Rotational or Spiral breeding-- I've done a lot of reading on it and it is a better alternative to Line breeding. I'm pretty well set up on boys that I can do that now! That only thing I'll have to buy is another black rooster for next year so breed my offspring back to from this coming year. Anyway, I'm so glad that you have been feeling pretty good and I hope that continues for you! Hope you get a couple more eggs today from your friend! I'd set them all together. :)

Anyone else ever try doing home grown pumpkin before? I made fresh pumpkin pies years ago but it seems like they had lots of flavor when I got them cooked. I didn't get hardly anything done today I intended. I spent at least 2 hours cutting up the stupid pumpkin and getting it ready to cook.
That day I had my wreck-- literally a half hour before it, I was talking to the lady at the Pumpkin patch and she was telling me the difference between the pumpkins. She had a sign of "pie pumpkins" up near the front and they were so small and cute. Just on a whim I asked her why they were "pie pumpkins" and not just regular pumpkins. I kind of thought I had a really dumb question, but as it turned out, she said that there are several kinds of 'pie' pumpkins and that they are not all equal and that some of them are VERY tasty and have a lot more flavor. That is the kind she had and she listed the name of the pumpkin, but I don't recall what it was now. She told me the name of the most common pie pumpkins that are at the store, and said those aren't near as nice as the ones she is growing out in her patch. I nearly bought a couple, but then figured-- I have no time to make a real pumpkin pie! And too true--- only mere minutes later I wrecked the van and have been not myself for the last few weeks anyway. I'm barely keeping this house together. This place is more of a wreck than it has ever been. Sigh. But that is something you could google-- and see which one is the best and then buy those seeds?? I was thinking about doing that next year.

I am so with you on this whole process - I just like things to be settled. The next thing you will be facing is the negotiations over selling your house. Honestly, that was worse for me than buying. As a buyer, if we couldn't reach agreement, I wasn't out anything - I would just keep looking until we found another property that met our needs. But as a seller it feels like there is more at stake because if you can't reach agreement with THIS buyer, who knows how long it will be before you even get another offer. A friend and I both listed our houses the same week and I was so lucky to get an offer within two weeks of listing the house, while she is still waiting, having to keep the house in show-worthy condition and never knowing when the next notification will come that there is a showing, and all the time waiting for someone - anyone - to be interested enough to even make an offer.

Ned displayed this morning!!! Its the first time since his illness so I was really excited to see it.

Our furnace is working again. I am actually feeling very cranky about the whole thing. So after paying for a service call, we now have a furnace that runs. I guess last winter was so mild that they heated solely with the heat pump and the fireplace - maybe they never even knew the furnace didn't work?

The other thing about this that has me hopping mad is we paid for an inspector to do a "thorough" inspection of the place but he didn't notice the furnace didn't work? What were we paying him for anyway?

So a simply 30-minute oil change turned into 3 hours and a $300 bill. Oh well, in the 8 years I've had the car, all I've done is oil changes and tires, so I guess it was due a little TLC.

Josie, I thought I'd update you on the Silchins. Now that they've matured a little - I guess they are like 10 weeks old now? - I can tell they are split 50/50 on gender. The one you thought was a Mille Fleur is gorgeous and I'm so happy she's one of the girls. Being a creative pet namer, I've named her Millie. LOL - 'nuff said. Big Blue is also a girl and one of the little splashes that is almost white is a girl and has a very pretty face - I really like her. The boys, well, you warned me the Silchin boys have 'tude and you weren't wrong. There is another almost white splash, almost identical to the girl and the other day when I was carrying him to the chick pen, he just reached out, grabbed a pinch of my skin with his beak and didn't let go until we arrived. It was like "Put me down. I'm warning you. I'm not letting go your skin until you PUT ME DOWN". All the boys peck as I reach to pick them up almost every time - I've never had chicks like this before! They really just make me laugh though as they are such tiny little bundles of fluff and if I didn't see the pecks, I'd never know they happened, they hurt so little. I'm so excited for spring and all of my new "incubators".
Oh, I'm not going to say NEVER to turkey! LOL I just don't have any good pen right now. I was really, really hoping that my DH would get those holes drilled for me. I want to have a covered pen for them if I get them. I'm DONE with coyotes getting a bird of mine. That was too heart breaking. I'm hoping later this year or even in the Spring my DH will come around to digging my holes so I can start on the pens I'm wanting. I was also thinking of carving out a spot for them to roost in the horse barn, too. But there again, when my parents moved, they moved a TON of their stuff into our barn to store for the next 2.5 years so when they come back, they are taking it. But it took up all the space I was going to turn into indoor silkie runs out of the sun and possibly a place for a turkey or two. Sigh. Upside, IF we get that job here, I think we're going to build another barn-- bigger than what we have and move all of the "vehicles" in there-- like my tractor, horse trailer and 2 trucks, etc... Anyway, right now, I have no turkey room.
sad.png
I hope my silkie girls I gave you turn into really nice broodies for you! Once they hit laying age, they immediately turn into mama-wanna-be's. I swear, mine go broody the second they lay their first egg! So glad that Ned is feeling better and that your furnace is now working. Sounds like that was a BIG problem with not being hooked up right. Wow. Sorry about the brakes, they sneak up on you fast!

Thanks all, very much!! :) In a rush to get the day going at home and here, but little Miss will be fine I am sure. She has good docs and the best attitude possible :) She is a trooper!

So glad that she will be okay, but not a good thing to have! That is such a worrisome illness, for sure. Do you have a nebulizer? My oldest has asthma, and even though it's for him, I have used it for breathing treatments on the other kids when they've been really sick with respiratory illness. I've told the Dr we have one-- and he has given me a smaller dose in packets to use on the other kids and I still have plenty left. Those things really come in handy. Hope she is feeling better in no time at all!

Medawinks I hope S gets well soon! It's unfortunate that you have to postpone the surgery but getting her well is the most important thing. What rotten luck. She is such an inspiration; anytime I start a self pity, I think of that big smile and the obstacles she has faced and has to face in the future. What a precious gift she is.
I have a hatcher full of ducks this morning. I need to find another chick waterer and get these guys moved to the duck shelter. I think I counted about 25 viable eggs and they might have all hatched. I can't see for sure through the door. I think I have another smaller batch to go in the hatcher Friday and one more right after Thanksgiving. These are all for my duck buyer. I can't figure out where my pekins are laying. They were laying in the old garage until I closed in the pen outside of it and I haven't found an egg from them since. I think somewhere around here there's probably a big pile of frozen eggs.
I was struck with terror last night when I realized it's only one week until Thanksgiving. I was thinking it was two. I have really got to get my act together some how. I still need to get pens up and separate chickens for my buyer on Friday too. I have a few more of them to catch too that are still free to roam in the mornings. I am either tons slower or I have definitely over estimated how much I can get done in a day. Probably both!
I have a big pot of older locker meat and rice cooking that I'll add pumpkin to later. The dogs will have a feast this evening.
Lots more ducks! At least you have someone who wants them, that is great! I would love to hatch silkies right now, but I really need my pens built before I get started with chicks again. I'm pretty sticky too, I want to see them and what quality they are before I let them go! LOL You have the numbers on your side, for sure! I wonder where they are laying now? Yeah, T-Day is not that far off!! I'm soooooo glad we are not hosting, I could not have done it this year. Our family gatherings are insanely large. We have over 60 people show up! We did host one year, and it was a disaster in my small kitchen! NEVER again! I hate my galley style kitchen. If we stay, we are adding on to this house and putting in a nice BIG kitchen. Then I will host again. I would love to have mature nut trees in my yard to pick. WOuldn't it be awesome to have pecan and walnut trees in your yard to go harvest nuts from?? That would save soooo much money!!

We bought our berm house in 2005 when my DH and I got married (in our late 50's). It was a disaster. It hadn't had any cosmetic work since it was built in 1986. The outside looked like a wrecked trailer house had been robbed of its siding (everyone called it the "ugly white underground house on hwy 99") and the inside was all paneling (dark -- not ugly exactly, but dark and busy). The carpet was 20 years old and looked it. We thought we bought it worth the money on 14 acres, and then we put another 50,000 in it to build an elaborate fence, reface the outside (with cedar and stone) and redo all the popcorn ceilings and the floors and finish the sheetrock for painting. That included an attached garage added and 2 bathrooms and a kitchen completely redone, so we didn't feel like we overspent (and, honestly, didn't really care at the time). We put down cork floors in part of the house and a combination of porcelain tile and tumbled slate in the rest and invested (not an overstatement) in granite counters in the kitchen. It took almost 4 years to get everything done, but the wait was worth it.

I don't suppose we will get out of it what we have in it, but it suits us down to the ground. Our goal was to have a place to grow old together, and that is what we have. It is all on one level without a stair anywhere to be seen. We heat with a small, catalytic Earth Stove, so our heating bills are very small, and because we are earth sheltered on 3 sides and the roof, our cooling bills aren't bad either (this summer we got over $200 one month for a record high for us. We are all electric, so gas isn't an option, but that isn't a problem at this point.

I will keep my fingers crossed on the inspection. Enjoy your new home and make it your own over time. You will forget the initial price before you know it.

Well we heard back on the house. Not the best news. The seller couldn't come down on the price anymore so I guess we are buying it at her first counter offer price. But if all goes well with the home inspection we are on our way to being residents in rural Towanda! I am pretty excited to get everyone moved and to have a nursery for the baby! Just want to get going on it but you know how that goes. All the paperwork and stuff.
Wow, your house sounds really neat and very energy efficient! I would want to run gas or a wood stove in there, though. I can't imagine having electric everything, but it still sounds like it's pretty efficient despite that!

We stopped at the Verizon store to talk to them about releasing my dd's number so she can use her number on her new plan with her dh. We never did get my daughter her number back, and now that won't be happening. It was a very long day, and I was so tired last night I couldn't even get through all of the posts so I saved it to finish this morning.

Hawkeye, I caught on that the Silkies skin was black but the meat is black too?????? How could you disguise it?

If you have a bad rooster that means they will always be bad? I thought that if they were put in a different environment they could change. Like if there wasn't so much boy competition.

If anyone is interested, Harvesters is Saturday. I don't go, sometimes my dh goes and meets his parents there so please call and get the info. I'd hate for someone to travel and not have what they need. I don't know how it all works.
WOW, that sounds like an awful ordeal with Verizon. I've been with Sprint for years-- but last year I was ready to change because I was hunting for the best price on the data plans with no restrictions. Anyway, I've been with Sprint for like 18 years-- I had a cell phone back when they were BAG phones that you kept in your car!! When they first came out on the market to the public, my dad ran out and bought me one for my first year of college. I was driving a pretty unreliable car and that thing came in handy many times. Once it just died on me in the middle of nowhere and another time I blew a tire and it forced me down into a ditch and no one would have seen me-- it happened at night. I didn't dent the car, but it was scary-- felt like i hit sand and it went out of control. There was another time -- this was when I moved on from the bag phone to the flip phone, I was then going to WSU and had parked my car across the street in overflow parking (NEVER do that again!!!) and someone had slashed all 4 of my tires that night -- I was walking out to my car late that night after a night class all alone and I heard someone start to run after me, and I just had that bad feeling, so I ran to my car and when I reached for the door, noticed that my tires were all flat! The person tried to open my door the second I shut it, but i had locked it as soon as I opened the door so when I shut it, it would be locked and I started it up in record time and drove out on all 4 rims. It was crazy, and it still strikes fear in my heart when I drive past that parking lot. Anyway, the phone came in handy that night, too!

OH I forgot. Congrats on the house Josie! I am so happy for you! What's a little money anyway???
roll.png
When do you think you will close on it? I can't wait to see pictures. I have some cages you could use to transport some birds if you need them. You could just return them when you are coming back up to get more stuff or something. Just thought I'd mention that.
Mammahen, no the pecan pie is for my kids... the chickens won't ever get anything that pricy to make unless it goes bad for some reason.
lol.png

I buy my pecans from Sam's as well. It's the cheapest place but the last time I priced them I almost fell over. Unbelievable! I really need to make a trip up there soon cause we are getting low on many of our staples.
I got the vacuum sealer I ordered yesterday. Just now opened the box. More instructions to read. I hate reading instructions!
I was looking at vacuum sealers yesterday at Walmart... thinking that's a great idea! I didn't get one, but may put that on my xmas list! :)

Josie, that is a degree I don't hear of too often! What do you do with a Communication Science degree? Makes me think of radio and tv! I'm with you on the sloppy work, it's going to be there for a long time after you're done. No point in doing it wrong and having the frustration of a sloppy job. I'm glad my DH is particular when it comes down to working. Like I told you with the fencing, we put up the two end posts and then ran the first wire and stretched it. That gives you a perfect line to put your T posts in. But of course, my DH went along and measured it off and spray painted where all the posts go in. That was a lot of extra time, but oh well. It looks very "even" out there! I'm sure the horses appreciate the asthetics of a nicely spaced T-post, right??
lau.gif
So you are already moving stuff out of your house? That is really smart of you!! I love those Pods-- then you don't have to move them, they do all the work. You just load and unload. Nice! Are you wanting to redo floors in the new home? Sounds like a plan to me-- get it done before you get moved in.

Sorry you couldn't get them down any more. I sure hope whatever the price was, you're okay with it. But the house is beautiful, I think you'll be so happy! Get that nursery set up and just sit back and wait.
big_smile.png
Good luck for a smooth transition!

We did get my phone turned back on, and they are offering me another $100 of a smart phone as a compensation for the trouble. I'm so tempted, it would be more convenient, but I don't want to be tied to them for another 2 years when we've had so much trouble. At the same time, my phone is going on 3 years and is messing up and I don't want to wait until it dies to do something. We never did get my daughter her number back, and now that won't be happening. It was a very long day, and I was so tired last night I couldn't even get through all of the posts so I saved it to finish this morning.
Mommahen, another option on phones is to look on eBay for unlocked phones. I haven't bought a new phone since my very first phone more than 10 years ago. I had one 2-year contract and that was enough for me. Since then, I've always purchased my phones on eBay unlocked, and that way I don't have to be under contract so can change any time. Depending on which network Verizon uses, you would need to search for phones with that capability. For example, AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM network, so if I was with one of those companies, I do a search for "unlocked GSM" phone. If they were made for the GSM network, they will have a place to put a SIM card, so I can just take my SIM card and insert it in the new phone and away I go. So when I need a new phone, I do some research online to find the model I want, then start looking on eBay for unlocked phones of that model that will work on a GSM network, and usually I can get a new (to me) phone for between $20-50 without the need to enter into a contract. Just be careful what you are bidding on because some of the phones on there are not working and they will be listed as "for parts" and you probably don't want one of those. But if you are careful to read the full description, usually it works out. I've only had to return one and that was because the seller wasn't honest when he described it. He had listed it as working but it wasn't. I tried to work with him to resolve it privately but he refused, so I entered a dispute with eBay and got my money back. But every other time (and I've bought quite a few phones over the years between me, DH and my kids) it has worked out great. DH has had his current phone for 4-5 years so buying used doesn't necessarily mean buying something on its last legs.

That is a great pic with the other one displaying in the background.

Hello, I just found this thread and wanted to introduce myself. I'm from southeastern KS and have been raising chickens with my folks for about a year and half now.

Its true. I have seen things very smooth and routine to chaos once my younger roos hit that special age. I have 23 hens, 10 of which are only 6 weeks so not with the main flock yet and 9 roos, one of which is only around 3 months so he is not ready yet and still fitting into the flock. oh and 10 still in my bathroom not sure on hens and roos there yet. I do need to down size roos. Unfortunately any roos in this bunch still inside will have to be culled or maybe I can give them to help out others.. I told the kids that as long as everyone got along there would be no problem keeping them but once they started hurting each other or my hens or us they would have to be taken care of. We got these birds at a local guy in town and really just let me pick whatever. SO I picked ones that looked colorful and different and just figured we would go from there and when they got bigger we would know who is roo and who is hen. I got the Goddess chicks because I wanted more layers to provide more eggs and to offset our roo population. These 2 bad boys only started acting up a week ago. I wonder if it could be the fact that I added a couple to the flock and now also they are living next to a group of chicks. I know alot of things can be stressers, maybe this is the reason for their behavior. Still not acceptable ny any means.. Sorry just need to be sure of my actions before I go thru with things.

Could it be a Marsh Hawk (called a Hen Harrier in England)? http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Northern_Harrier/id We had some of them wintering around Emporia/Admire all winter. In spite of their English name, they didn't bother the chickens. Only our resident red-tail harassed them.

Sharol

I looked up a picture of the Gryfalcons-- PRETTY!!! These hawks (or whatever they are) aren't white on top-- just on the bottom. But pure white!! When they open their wings, they are all white and they are much bigger than the hawks we had earlier. I'm hoping they move on, they are scary looking! If I didn't know better, I'd think we had a couple of Eagles out here! They really look like an eagle. They are hanging out together.

Hawkeye- Too bad you werent ready for a turkey yet, I still have one available.
I have 3 pecan trees in my front yard, they produce very well. I always tell people if they want some bring a bag and help yourself.

HEChicken- My boys display all day. They are very talkative all day long. They alert me to people pulling up the drive or anything out of place in the yard which is great. They gobble at ANY loud sound, like ,me calling the dogs in or hollaring across the yard to the kids lol they are a riot.
This is my black spanish/royal palm mix "Tiki" he is a sweetheart and gives us "turkey love" lol. We hug him and he stands there and waits for us to be done and my daughter calls it turkey love.
