Consolidated Kansas

I just talked to Karen. The doctor believes she contracted a certain infection from having the flu so severely. The antibiotics they gave her have helped considerably. She won't have a definite answer for a week when biopsy results get back, but it is looking very favorable. She might even get to go home today. This time I cried because I was happy. Keep the prayers coming. She's not well yet. I gave her my mothering talk about taking it easy. She said she just wants to get home and see her birds!!
I am working away. Trying to dry some fresh sage in the oven so I can make my own poultry seasoning.
I should have done that days ago.
Got the turkey in the bring but it won't be brining as long as I wanted.
Now I've got to get started on cleaning.

Danz, oh that is good news about Karen, will keep her in my prayers. She is always going, going, going, so hopefully someone else will take over & she can rest & recover when she gets home.

My DH is getting ready to leave, he can't blame me this time for his leaving late. I usually get blamed for that, but it's on him this time, ha.

I need to get outside & get some work done soon. I just got the last 3 guineas back in the hoop coop, so they're safe for now. The chickens are so very happy to be out free-ranging after being shut up for over two weeks. I just heard one of my young Swedish Flower Hen roos trying to crow, it's really comical because he's got that scratchy crow they have before they really get the hang of it. Well nobody work too hard today, try to enjoy the holiday!

Total weight: 775
Your percentages of total weight are:
Milo: 32.26%
Oats: 16.13%
Corn: 16.13%
Wheat: 16.13%
Layer Crumbles: 19.35%

Are these the percentages you were asking for?
I was thinking ppimf was looking for the breakdown of protein, fat etc, but I could be wrong. I would be interested too, in knowing how to figure out THOSE percentages - do you have a formula?

So glad to hear Karen is doing better. I'm sure they will discharge her if at all possible - hospital staff usually want to send home any patient they can because they know its better for them to be at home with family for the holidays, and the fewer patients they have on holidays the easier it is on the hospital staff too. I can so understand the desire to get home and see the birds. Knowing how my blood pressure drops just standing there watching them, and how pleasurable it is to watch them moseying about the yard, I would certainly miss them if I were gone for a few days.

Schools out today, my nest will be full as soon as the middle daughter arrives from college! YAY!

Chicken lights, I don't add lights for the chickens, all lights are for me to see and they go off when I'm not needing them. I figure God made them to lay less when there is less light and there must be a good reason. If I kept them in coop for some reason and did not let them out, I might try adding some light, the barn has light panels to let in some light. I think either way is fine, just whatever you want to do, lights or no lights.

I'm so glad Ivomec saved Ned!

I think I want to get more Black Australorps next spring. Anyone have suggestions where I might be able to get some in Kansas?

Edited to change my spelling.

If you want to know percentages of protein, fat, etc. for the mixture as a whole, and you know those numbers for all of the individual components, it isn't hard to figure out. PLEASE NOTE: I do NOT have accurate numbers for these commodities, so the numbers I'm using are made up. You'll need to insert your real numbers in this equation. You should be able to get the real numbers by calling your local co-op. Also, please note that I'm figuring percent protein, but the method would be the exact same for fat or anything else.

((% by weight of commodity 1 - as a decimal) * (value for commodity 1)) + ((% by weight of commodity 2 - as a decimal) * (value for commodity 2)) ..... ((% by weight of commodity n) * (value for commodity n))

For the weights given by ppimf and using fake numbers for % protein, you can figure the % protein of the mixture by doing the following. I've highlighted the numbers for the first two commodities to hopefully make it more clear where I got the numbers...

Milo Oats Corn Wheat Layer Crumbles
((.3226)(5)) + ((.1613)(6)) + ((.1613)(7)) + ((.1613)(8)) + ((.1935)(18))

With this, you'll need to multiply first, which gives you:
1.613 + 0.9678 + 1.1291 + 1.2904 + 3.483

Your final answer is:
8.4833

so, in the above example, the mixture would have 8.4833% protein

Does that make ANY sense or have I just confused everyone?

So relieved to read Karen is doing better! It is so hard to take care of oneself when being the caretaker.... It is such a conundrum; rest is a such precious commodity, and yet so difficult to accept when it is forced.

Can anyone tell me what type if egg I should be looking for from a hatchery Favarolle and a hatchery black polish? My 3 silkies are all laying now and I have several little pink eggs each week. I don't see any white ones or larger light pinkish brown though.... With being at work all day, I haven't seen either of them in a nest box, but that doesn't mean that they don't go there. I just find it odd that the hatchery Silkie bought at the same age IS laying.

Good luck with the sage!! I bet that smells heavenly!!!! I must learn how to do that!!

I have lights on my birds after it is dark and by 5 am mainly because I need them since their roosts are built into a section of my sun porch and I let my dogs out into the yard via the kitchen door ( porch has a dog door). I don't have any choice. The dogs myst go out and I feel compelled to check on the birds each time.None of them seem to lay daily, so I am not sure if it is affecting them much or not. Not really wanting to increase the number of eggs, but we certainly are enjoying the ones we get!

Thank you! I might do that! Right now, though, I need to save every penny for xmas shopping. Sigh. But after the holidays, I just may have to order something cute for myself! ;)
No rush--I'm not goin' anywhere! :D

Holy chicken patties, you guys... I just sold four more of my chicken flock mug. XD

Hello everyone! Finally some time at home! Went to Aldi and Walmart this a.m. before the rush. Now I'm home and need to get started on the Carb-bonanza for tomorrow. Just our immediate family, but everyone wants a turkey dinner. I've delegated the side dishes, we'll see how it goes.
Someone else will have better responses than me, for sure! But there are a couple I know! So far, I had my silkies lay all thru the winter last year. They didn't lay very much, but they don't lay a whole lot anyway, so I doubt they are a great example. But no, they didn't quit laying and I didn't have them under lights.
Also, I've read and HeChicken has reminded us that chickens are born with a set number of potential eggs. Once they are used up, they are gone. If they lay every single day, the bird will be out of eggs much quicker than a bird that lays only every other day to every 3 days. I have barred rocks that even through a hard molt are still laying every single day-- no let up. I'm guessing they will burn out and be out of eggs a LONG time before my other girls are.

HeChicken, I was trying to find the Ivermetin Injectable and I can't find it cheap anywhere! How much did you pay? Atwoods and TSC want $39.99 for a little bottle of it!!! Yikes!!! But I found it here: (just don't know what shipping is)

$26.95

I found what I thought to be worms this morning during morning chores, so I decided to go this route. I went to Orscheln's this morning, and they had a generic brand called Noromectin, for 29.99/50ml. Hechicken, is the dose you used 4ml/gallon? I have the black rubber water pans, so I'll probably just put it in all of them. One day of that, and no withdrawal of eggs?

Quote: Don't know why this empty quote box is here, I was impressed that I got the other one on here!

I have lights on a timer in the coop. 5 - 8 in the a.m., and the same at night. Out of the older chickens, only 3 have completely molted so far. I don't know how the light affects that, but I am going to cut the light back by about 30 minutes on each side to see if more will start molting. I've been getting around 10 eggs/day. I have 5 that just started laying this late summer/fall.

Hope Karen is feeling good enough to go home, and that her family helps her take it easy!

Going to start on some pies, now.

I think I read where JOSIE said egg withdrawal of 2 or 3 weeks, but I can't find her post.... I'll keep searching for her post.
