The Foothills Of Chickendom
I made a thread a while back about successful threads and controversial questions seemed to be very popular.

So this thread is for all controversial questions, discussions and constructive conversations.

Constructive conversation: Expanding your knowledge, not just a battle of competing ego's.

Please, please don't let this thread get out of hand and don't let it get taken down.

No talk of religion, even if the discussion eventually does loop around to religion.

What I say goes ( in regards to discussions getting out of hand ). If I say the discussion is over, then IT'S OVER.

Please have an open mind and ENJOY

I was involved in an interesting thread not long ago about 'natural' chicken keeping, what constitutes natural and whats not. Was interesting, but an opinion based thread will usually end up with two different opinions taking over hahahaha.

An example of this was a discussion about US gun laws, man that discussion can get pretty heated from both sides. I learnt there that no matter what evidence there is to support one opinion or another, once someone has one, it's very hard to sway them to think otherwise.

hahaha, well I am hoping that this one will be different, actually moving the conversation on and not get stuck in a looping rut.

Oh my goodness yes! I am pretty sure there is a gun discussion thread here on BYC and I got into it ( forget how now ) and boy was is heavy.lol.
Well perhaps if we all keep open minds we can sway someone.

Although I love the saying "If your mind is to open, your brain falls out" by I have forgotten.lol.

I did get a few PM's, I think the list was growing, I just came here instead of replying.

I dig the open mind brain falls out quote. I fear my mind is more like a glass of milk. It hold a fair bit, but it gets to a point where when I tip more stuff in something spills out. I think the first out was algebra closely followed by the periodic table hahahaha

Another one I was thinking of while cooking tonight was country vs city debate. People seem to bang on about where they were raised and how important they are, yet always forget the other. Country people seem to really dislike city people, forming the opinion they are rude, fast paced and have no idea about where their produce comes from or how hard the rural secotr have it (which are all true to some extent in some ways, but hardly the 'rule') Yet country people struggle with city life, traffic and the concept that without cities, there would be no farms. No point in producing 1000's of tons of produce annually if there is no populace to consume it.

Both city and rural life takes a balance and nurturing to ensure both survive to keep the circle going. Neither is 'better' than the other IMO, just people that are better suited to each lifestyle.

I really do not care for controversy. Everyone has a right to their opinion. Unfortunately I feel that many people do not ever form their own opinion, they regurgitate someone else's. I think if you have an open mind and a closed mouth, then you are not going to be losing anything but prejudice, bias, and intolerance.
It takes time, thought, and research to have a balance well constructed opinion.
Which brings me to another point: The only real reason to hold opinions is for your own benefit.
There are people on here that believe one breed of bird is more valuable than another, some look down on lowly hatchery birds.
If you are into preserving the breed or sell pure breed birds, then your opinion is going to go in a direction that benefits those goals.
If you want eggs and fun birds and you have no interest in breeding showing or selling... then you are going to think those other people need to re-arrange their panties and relax about you business a little.
Both valid arguments.
But why get into it?
I agree with both perspectives.
I do not think I will be here much because while I like to encourage people I really do not like to get into anything with people.
I avoid conflict, and controversy. I have dealt with way too much of it in my life to want to go looking for it.

this might be an active thread for you.
Good luck with it.

Sometimes when it comes to opinions and debates, there is no right or wrong; it's just whatever you believe. An example of that is country vs. city which someone brought up. Technically, an ideal society in my opinion is every person/family for themselves; produce everything themselves. Or maybe even have small balanced communities. But that's not the reality of the way our society is set up, and the world is too populated to really have everyone live naturally. But anyway, back to city vs. county, there really is no "better" technically in our society. Most farmers rely on income because everyone has to pay taxes, and a lot of modern farms use expensive equipment. First of all, you need to have a population to buy your excess yield to make income, and you need people in the industry to make your farm equipment. As far as city people go, they often consider country folks "backwards" and insult their way of life. But hey, where did the food on their plate come from? Me myself, like I said, I'm for neither but I will I've a country life. I basically believe in self sustainability; back to the old days, living with what the land gives me. That's not what our society supports thought, and what do I do if I get sick? I need a doctor so that ties into why we need "city folks". So there really is no right or wrong, that kind of debate is strictly opinion based. Someone said don't bring up religion, but it really have to because that's an example of no right or wrong in my opinion. There are hundreds of religions out there; what makes the religion you were taught the "right" one? This is why I tend to respect everyone's different religion, because who's to say theirs is any more right or wrong than mine?

What annoys me though is when there actually is a right or wrong and I know I'm right. For example, I hear all the time that an egg is an egg; like saying store bought caged eggs are the same as free ranged organic. I cracked two eggs and ate both, and free range organic were clearly better, no scientific evidence needed. I also got stuff I clearly researched and experimented with and people tell me I'm wrong when they got no proof they are right. The reason for this in my opinion is that people only want to hear what they want to hear. If you ate mcdonalds everyday; would you really want to accept the fact that the food you are eating is killing you? People always like to believe what they're told also; just because someone on tv told you something was right or your parents told you something was right doesn't necessarily make it right. Sometimes this is hard to face, but it's true. Even my theory of "backing with evidence" is sometimes off too because who's to say the evidence is even right in the first place? I believe it may have been an Einstein quote, but there was a quote I like that went something like "If a million people believe in a foolish idea, it's still a foolish idea".

I'm sometimes a hypocrite of my own word too because some of the stuff I do say and support is opinion driven. I'm a full supporter of organic produce, and I'm quick to say pesticide is bad for you. I say this because I automatically consider things man made bad to put into your body, especially when you associate the term "chemical". I've never researched heavily how dangerous non organic produce is, but it's currently something I'm working on, so as or now, I may be wrong. I do know that the stuff that comes from my garden (completely organic) tasted better to me than store bought non-organic, so I can say that as a statement.

Sorry for my rant, but welcome to my world, I always try to keep my mind open. A lot of what I believe is based on what I think, I grew up to be very different from my parents. Just because I was told to believe something doesn't make me believe it.

Hello from the city :frow

Yes, we know where eggs come from!!

I wonder how the country/city stereotypes originated. Just because city peeps are good at one thing doesn't automatically raise them above country dwellers, who are good at something else. Nobody should be considered a lesser being because they don't live a life of mass consumerism, or don't have access to an expensive education. (Or perhaps they make a choice to not pursue higher education as their primary focus, and that's perfectly okay too! Society would never produce anything if everyone was sitting at desks typing out reports and papers, although of course those jobs are important as well).
I suppose the societal hierarchy just functions with its epicentre in the middle of town. :p

I grew up in an industrial city, now I live in a city of education. Our views by no means must be dictated by our parents, background or current circumstances. The world would be a great place if people were better at making objective assessments!

I agree. Ignorance plays a major roll in beliefs, it's the lack of knowledge why some would think an egg is an egg or one way of life is better than another. Untill you can appreciate the differences, then there is ignorance. There are always two sides to every story, but you must listen to each to begin to learn. I was born a country girl, lived the city life, and now try to blend the two. I learn something new every day from each world and the more I learn, the more I see the country girl taking over. You can never go wrong by doing the right thing.
