Well we tried the tuna suggestion, and I did catch something - my neighbors cat!
We let the emus chase him over the fence so he'd think twice next time. Ha Ha. My neighbor suggested the Flybait & Pepsi, and we could put it their coop where the coon has been still coming in. The cats etc. don't go in there and they would put their cats etc. up at night anyhow as a precaution. We'd put some tuna and everything you all suggested nearby too. I'd pick it up during the day and replace it late at night again until we get rid of it. Most people I talked to said they normally find the coon not more than 5 to 15 feet away. Maybe if we put so much food in the coop it will be to fat to squeeze out! Ha Ah. I hate killing any animal, but I'm tired of watching my chickens disappear, and our yard looking like the State PEN.
I coonhunt and often catch them to place in my hunting area to train young dogs and I wil ltell you that a really ripe bananna wil lget them all of the time. No cats, once in a while a possum but I have never caught a skunk.
I was told it is illegal in Ohio to relocate trapped coons, but that homeowners are allowed to kill them. I was also advised that putting coon blood around an area will keep the relatives from coming there. (I have not tried the kill method.)
I just use a big garden rake or shove sometimes a 2 x 2 to catch mine , caught one 2 weeks ago and again one tonight only he/she was just walking down the coop run door walkway , not good - got him -then check on the girls -head count in order -all was safe and sound
I've gotten some good ideas from this thread. As for bait, I second peanut butter; we catch at least a coon a week and whether we use cat food or peanut butter, they both work. But I don't have to go out and buy the peanut butter, there's always some in the cupboard.
I've had coon walk into an empty have-a-heart trap. Not sure what they were thinking as the chickens were in the barn and the trap was up in the hayloft. At any rate, in my experience, set the trap and they will come........
