corn

I agree that corn is fine (even in summer) as part of a good balanced diet, sure. I never disagreed with that incidentally.

Mine chase me around the yard

We live at a huge feedyard with 3 mills and we are surrounded by cornfields for miles.....you bet I feed corn

It's free for me! lol

It's more like corn powder after I get it from the mill, but it's all the same. I get it in small quantities (like a plastic drinking cup full) and feed it within a day or two. It's no where near a large part of their diet, but they loove it for a treat.

The old books from "way back yonder" sometimes said that the meal of corn was as nutritious as the whole. So hey - at least yours is fresh, too!

Of course corn is fine to feed. It's is the main ingredient in chicken feed (at least any label I have read).

For example I have a ration sheet in front of me because the mill filled my bin yesterday.

1000 lb order (16% layer) = 750 lbs corn + 200 lbs 41% poultry concentrate (protein and whatever) + 50 lbs oyster shells.

Total cost $125.38 (ya, that's 6.27 a 50lb bag

All I know is my babies love the scratch grains I throw em. So much so that they now just hang around the area of the lawn where I usually throw it down even long after its picked clean. They seem to remain the coolest chickens in town.

Ya wanna heat up some chickens? Drop 2 roosters in a potato sack. That'll heat em up good..

Not to steal the thread subject, but I searched on "shrimp" because I want to know if it's okay to feed chickens shrimp (my freezer is not working in all of this heat)!! I read as closely as I could through this ENTIRE thing on corn, looking for the shrimp reference???? Coincidentally I also have some thawing frozen corn that I do NOT have to ask if its okay to feed my chickens - LOL. It is positively thier favorite food, rates up there way past watermelon, pretty much tied for first place with mealworms. So anyone know about shrimp??? Thanks!
