Cornish Thread

Thanks, if I wrote it down right I should have some cornish rock rooster x dark cornish hens hatching out within next 3 days so looking forward to that. Ill post some pics of the chicks and keep updated on weekly weights and growth.

Yeah ive heard they dont do good in the cold. Chanteclers were bred for Canada if I remember right
Yes, we have two unrelated Chanteclers, the partridge and the white. The white was bred in Quebec, which (at least used to) have much harsher winters and milder summers than where I am, and the same is true for the Partridge which was bred in Alberta. The Buckeye is the perfect pure breed for my cimate I think, just the right combo of cold/heat hardiness.

Buckeyes were bred in Ohio U.S. nickname Buckeye State....Ive had a pair a while back. They were not exhibition quality or anything fancy so I can judge the breed based on them. You can see alot of cornish in the ones I have seen though.

This one was a bantam female at a poultry show here.

They look an interesting breed, I like the look of them

Gona keep a look out for some over here.

They sound like a lot of DP breeds over here, some people are keeping them true to there DP history and some are just good egg layers.

I think that Buckeyes may not have made it to

Europe. Top me, the bantams look very different..... Anyway here's a not very good photo of my standard Buckeye rooster and some cornish on culling day at around six or seven months. Of course the cornish rooster I picked dropped dead a month later of a heart attack. The buckeye was a very meaty fellow, but more a dark meat chicken than breast meat.

I've never seen a Buckeye over here.
How are they as a meat bird compared to a Cornish ?

I've worked with a few Buckeyes...

The first were hatchery Buckeyes. YUCK. Glorified production reds with pea combs (and not all of them even had that!)

The second is my hen from very good breeder lines. She's gorgeous and very intelligent. Since I only have the one and I like her I haven't actually eaten any Buckeyes but she is very big and very heavy, probably 7.5 or 8 pounds. Not as compact as a Cornish but definitely a meat-oriented DP. She's heavier than my breeder stock Silver Penciled Rocks, which aren't small birds to begin with, and even heavier than many of my hatchery stock "DP" (ha!) roosters.
