Cornish Thread

Has anyone tried any hatchery Cornish bantams? If so, which hatchery and were they even close to SOP Cornish bantams?
I would say that the two are light years away from each other. We actually kept around a couple of female hatchery birds for demonstration purposed years ago. I do a lot of work with 4-Hers and the drastic difference in the hatchery stock and standard bred stock is very noticeable with this breed even to 3 & 4 graders.

Good luck! I had one very large hatch six weeks ago, sadly no pure Cornish in there but I did purchase some hatchery cornish that I'm quite pleased with. I have a little cockerel in that group that actually looks pretty good!

If you are breeding show birds, I would think it would be better to breed pairs so you know exactly who the parents are to each chick. Or can you circulate a single cock between several hens in individual pens? Or does it just not matter?

Thanks Adam, I figured that would be the answer.

You can circulate much like other breeding operations, keeping track of the offspring is vital to track results. It would be beneficial to rotate through the hens. Cock birds can service hens several times per day. Depending on how many girls you have, and how intensive you want to manage. I would only be able to manage a few moves per day. I plan on doing this very thing soon. I have two females that I want to track the offspring from at this point. I will pen them and rotate "Bob" through during the day. With the 4 hens during the evening hours, move him and he will service the first hen I am isolating, then move him immediately to the second. While i am gone he will service the second. When i come back he gets moved back to the 4 for the evening.
Hens can store semen for (I have read) up to a month. I would believe two weeks. Every hen is different.

Good luck with your projects!
